Wow. That one threw Melchy through a loop. He would have expected someone with this kid's looks to be a reader. Seriously. Putting his hands on his hips and inspecting Carlisle, Melchy decided that he liked him. Someone who hadn't yet learned to read even though he was that old was definitely all right in his book. "Don' watch much TV myself," he said. "Almos' none, actually. Cap'n says it's worthless an' we don' have one in th'house."

Shrugging, he flopped sideways, stretching out and rolling onto his back to look at the sky.

Carlisle sighed. "I like watching Project Runway," he admitted. It was a stupid show, horribly stupid, but it was like some kind of crazy hypnosis deal. "And 24. And that historical drama about Napoleon and Josephine. You know?" Well, Melchy probably wouldn't know. "They were just interesting," he muttered.

"So I guess you're going to go back to doing whatever your family does, huh?" Kind of gloomy; it was nice to talk to someone else without the whole rolling-on-the-ground-laughing-about-his-ridiculously-long-hair ordeal.

"Wouldn' be able to say one way or th'other," Melchy answered, turning his head and giving Carlisle a vaguely apologetic look. The boy's second question made him look back at the sky to consider an answer, and he shrugged. "Looks like it," he answered. "Cap'n says eventuall I'll have t'come fer some classes, but I ain' lookin' for'ard to it. Got lots better things to do." Shrugging as best he could with his shoulders on the ground, he closed his eyes and lay still.

"You take classes here, then?" he asked after a moment.

He nodded, ignoring the look. "Yeah. My aunt doesn't like Aekea's school system, and tuition is free, so. She doesn't see a need to send me to a public school." Besides, he got to meet some pretty neat types here. Like Melchy, though he'd never say as much. And other kids didn't bother him much, not really. It was okay.

"Sorry for babbling." Carlisle rolled, probably getting grass stains all over his clothes. "S'if you're just here for the day, are you going to a class after recess?"

"Dunno," Melchy said, and shrugged. "Don' really have much of a plan, t'be honest. Prolly be a good idea t'go in with all of ye, though. Don' wanna get in trouble, 'er anythin'." He shrugged and then looked at Carlisle, who was, he realized, the only person on the premises whose identity he knew. This whole 'school' idea was kind of alarming, and he honestly had no clue what his following plan of action should be. Which was probably not a good thing.

"What d'you do when recess is over?" he asked.

"We go inside," he said, "and go back to class. I'm going to go back to Language Arts and Literacy." With a frown, he sat up and sat up. He really, really did not go back to class, because the letters would just swim around and irritate him more. "It's not any fun at all, to be honest with you."

"Wow.......that sounds like a drag," Melchy said thoughtfully, running a hand through his hair and looking at the building. "Dunno how long Cap'n's gonna be gone, though, so I guess...I'll just find somewhere to hang out where she'll be able to find me when she comes back. That'd be the office or something, right?"
PostPosted: Fri Feb 06, 2009 8:40 am

"Yeah," said Carlisle, "the office would probably be best. The teachers would ask why you're there if you went to a classroom, I think, and the library would ask for a pass or something... Maybe the cafeteria? There's never anyone in there except during lunch I don't think." He shrugged and nudged at a rock with his foot. "Uh, I could walk you there if you don't know where it is?"

"Prolly the office is best, though," Melchizedek said. He'd seen cafeterias before, and they were big, and spacious, and he'd just feel weird alone in a big open space. It wasn't really his thing. Carlisle's offer made him smile, and he nodded. Sitting up, he looked down at Carlisle. "That'd be awesome, thanks. Dunno where anything is here," he said.

He nodded, and with a gesture began to lead the way back to the building. "I gotta go to class, so I should take you to the office first. That's all," he explained. "Besides, during class time you can't talk in the halls."

Melchy followed Carlisle obediently, pretty sure that he'd end up hopelessly lost in the building if he didn't. "Hey, man, thanks again...um...I hope you're not late 'cos of me, 'er anything..." he said, looking around with mild interest at the classrooms. "Um, I'm sure Cap'n'll be back for me before school's out 'er whatever, so I prolly won't see you again today. But if I'm ever in th'neighborhood again, I'll look you up, yeah?" He grinned at Carlisle, rather pleased with himself for making a new friend...or at least something similar to a new friend.

"I won't be," said Carlisle, with more confidence than he felt. It wasn't like he had to run halfway across the school, after all. That would suck. Unlike Melchy, he didn't peer into classrooms; he kept his hands in his pockets and shoulders hunched forward a little. Just because he knew his way around didn't mean he liked it here, or really wanted to be there.

He smiled at Melchy, though. "That's lucky. If I could leave early, I'd be so gone." It'd be nice, he thought, to meet up with Melchy again. Today had been, if not good, at least okay. "Here's the office," he said, gesturing to the door.

Heh, if only Carlisle knew his family. Getting hauled back home probably just meant chores. But whatever. Melchy could deal. Looking at the door to the office, he glanced back at the other boy and grinned. "Thanks, man. Be seein' ye," he said with a brief nod, then pushed open the door, took a deep breath to quell a vague fear of administration that welled up when he realized people in charge worked in the office, and strode inside.
