Josephine was having a hard time grasping that so many people would end up on the same island separately. Well, they hadn't seen anyone else, so maybe this woman was making it up. If she had been there for a year, she could have gone crazy. Yes, she must be making it up.
But then she pulled her hand out of the water, and unless Josephine had gone crazy herself, the hand definitely wasn't right. The scales glistened slightly in the light, and the skin moved with the hand perfectly. It had to be a costume or something. But the hand was too slender for her to be wearing anything.
"What the..." Somewhat in awe, she reached forward with own hand and touched the webbing, tugging it gently. It felt so real. Then she put her palm against the girl's, and felt the warmth. Suddenly the awe was gone, and she realized it was real. Josephine gave a slight scream before latching onto her brother for protection.

A bunch of people stranded on the same damn island? Pfft… come on. That sort of thing only happened in fiction! Maybe, if all of the currents and floes were right, maybe it was possible… but, if it was that sort of thing, why didn’t anyone know about it? How could no one know about it? A bunch of people mysterious disappeared in this part of the ocean and no one noticed? She was just trying to scare them, he was certain and he gave her a sharp glare to let her know it wasn’t working. He even opened his mouth to tell her exactly what he thought of her, but a look at her hand made him choke back his words.
It looked, for a lack of a better word, scaly. And dark, very very dark. Far darker than the skin on her face. A wetsuit then. Of course it had to be a wetsuit! And webbing, well that could be faked too, right? He put a hand on his sister’s back, trying to comfort her as best he could while still glaring at the other woman.
“What the Hell is wrong with you? This is not the time to start making jokes at people, especially after all my sister’s been through!” Him too, he knew, but he wasn’t about to mention that. The… the costume was very… uh… realistic, enough to shake him a little, but one of them had to be the voice of reason here. Besides, he had to keep Josephine safe. He tugged on his sister’s arm, saying, “Come on. Let’s get back to shore, and away from the crazy lady.”
