good i love a challenge, and i want to learn russian because it is half of my ancestory german is the other

I want to learn Russian for the same reason. My grandmother is Ukrainian and came over to Belgium during WWII. I know Ukrainian is a bit different from Russian, but it would already be great if I could talk to her in Russian. And I would like to visit the part of my family that still lives in the Ukrain and see some other places in Russia.

Ukranian is only a BIT different.. It's basically Russian and if you know enough Russian you'll understand it.. Sometimes Russians even use Ukranian terms.. lol. My cousins that are from Ukraine (I met last year) are technically Russian but live in Ukraine, though I think a lot of people in Ukraine are Russian, and only a portion of Ukraine speaks fluent Ukraine.. Something like that..

I remember being over this Ukrainin girl's house and we were playing a trick on her friend with a beet (the vegetable) and in russian it's svekla, but she said something different, but somehow I still understood her o_O but I don't remember what word she used..

I started out teaching Garret Russian and I decided to start out with the letters..
Of course, I have no idea how to do it since I can''t communicate with him verbally, I found some websites.

This is helpful for beginners. These websites have the images of the letters, both print and cursive, and also have the sound of them.

I love the Russian language! Especially writing it is a lot of fun in my opinion. Although it's quite hard and different from other languages I'm more familiar with (English/German/Chinese/French) I like it a lot.

Last spring I went with some other students from my school to visit our friend school in Latvia. Before we left our Russian teacher told us to try speaking Russian with our host families. But it turned out almost none of the Latvian students knew Russian. sweatdrop I guess older people would have known the language if we would have tried spoking with them.

Next spring the students from the friend school are going to visit us. biggrin It's going to be interesting.

Probably... back in the old days they taught Russian in Latvian schools (if I'm not mistaken), so I think the adults can speak it. Most of the younger generation can't though sweatdrop

That's true...The school's director knew only Russian, and not English at all. rolleyes
My friend had to send a packege to her bigsister's Latvian friend, so we went to post office. The lady behind the counter spoke Russian, and my host who was trying to take care of sending for us, went like o_O 'Excuse me...?'
