Freckles nodded, and curled up on the ground. {I'll wait for you here,} she said trustingly. {Then we can all get together and find a cave...} She yawned once more, and rested her head on her paws. I'll just close my eyes for a little while... tonight was wonderful... Cart... deer... zzzz.

The others gathered, Cart nudged Freckles. {Come on, Malachite found us a cave. She's joining us, by the way.} Cart and Malachite showed them the way to the cave.

Emblem trod up to Freckles' side and poked her gently with a green paw. {Hey, wake up. Malachite found a cave, and we need to head out anyway.} He sat down nearby and waited for her to wake up.

Freckles sat up and yawned widely. {Caves are nice,} she muttered with a tired smile at Emblem, then got up and shook herself off. She grabbed hold of the deer once more, some of her old energy returning, and set off after Cart to find the cave. {We'll have food once we get there,} she told Emblem. {Me an' Cart caught a nice deer. A fat one, see?}

Through everything that had happened Pax just stayed behind and watched without saying anything. He jumped in quickly, breaking his streak of silence. {I didn't help. I watched.}

Freckles nuzzled Cart back before turning to Pax. {Next time,} she said. {Now you know how it's done, you'll be able to bring down deer in no time.} She ran ahead, still dragging the deer carcass, and entered the cave. It was dark inside, and she could barely see, but it still shouted "safety" to her.

Sfor padded to the back of the cave, following Malachite. What was this? A sound...like...like the burning in her veins. Every hair, every swirl was in just the right place. Sfor could hardly believe that this beautiful dragon loved her. How lucky was she to have a love that loved her back?
Similiar thoughts ran through Malachite's head, but they were interrupted by the sight of a large boulder leaning against the wall. Malachite frowned and leaned forward to investigate. {There's something...not quite right about this. Sfor, what do you think?} she asked.
Sfor examined the boulder. {What, besides the fact that this is sandstone and this is a granite cave? This cave has no river in it, and this looks like it could have once been located in the creekbed outside.} She stared at it for a minute. {CART!!} she shouted. {Come 'ere! You've got to see this!}

Freckles ran up to see what Sfor was yelling about, but was shocked to see nothing more than a rock leaning against the wall. {What?} she asked. {It's just a stone, what's so special about that?} She pawed at it, and to her shock it moved slightly, revealing a dark depression behind it. {Hey guys,} she said excitedly, {help me move this thing! There's some kind of tunnel behind it or something.}

Emblem loped into the cave and skidded to a halt next to Sfor. He had heard her shout, and he always jumped to conclusions. {Oh, only a rock.} He walked as far around it as was possible, examining it. {Sandstone in a granite cave, eh?} Emblem pushed on it with a paw and was rewarded with a slight shift in the position of the stone. His eyes widened, and he shoved against it with his shoulder. The sound of stone on stone grated through the air and a cool, but musty scent filled the air. {Something is back there!}

{FINally someone helps me! Lazy bozos...} Sfor muttered. She put her shoulder firmly to the boulder.
{No need to be snippy, love,} Malachite murmured. She, too, helped Sfor shove the rock aside. The rock grated across the floor and finally revealed an entrance to another cave.
{Wow...} Cart murmured. {You were right...there is something back there! Wait here, I'll go check it out!}

{Don't get eaten!} Emblem called. {Who knows what's back there, anyway? Maybe a nest?} He looked around, peeking his head into the cave. {It's really dark in there...} Emblem murmured, swiftly retracting his head from the dark and gaping entrance.

Freckles darted into a cave. {Emblem was right,} she called, {there is a nest! And it has three eggs...} She nudged the nearest one. {They almost look like siblings; they have similar colors and everything.}

Cart whooped in joy. {Eggs! We've found eggs! We can nurse them and get them to hatch and there will be more dragons in the world!} Cart couldn't believe his joy. Ever since Old Silverback had told them about the plague and the eggs that were orphaned, he had dreamed of finding a nest such as this!
{Um...Cart?} Malachite ventured. {Um...who will perform the hatching spells?}
Cart suddenly deflated. {Uh...um...er...} He shook his head. {We'll deal with that later. Freckles, let's bring the deer in here. We should do some more hunting in the morning. We'll stay here until the eggs hatch, and trust me, we'll find a way to make 'em hatch.}
