They take a difficult situation and turn it into a funny one. Yes it is stupid. Yes it is perpetuate the idea that all women want babies. Just sit back, watch it, laugh and roll your eyes at the stupidity known as female stereotype.
@FallenEverdark
Movies aren't helping and sex ed isn't helping either. Our sex ed had quite a bit to do with how good babies were and that all women want them. It was annoying. Work as a cashier like at Wal-Mart on the first of the month on a full moon and see how wonderful those babies are then (I get headaches everytime). Just working there has changed my idea of three children down to one (I like kids, so the idea of pregnancy doesn't scare me that much and even if I were to get pregnant now, I would still have only one semester left of college after it is born). High schools in my county had the tendency to push males more often than females into college directions but still more girls went to college than the males that were pushed to. There are only 2 or 3 pregnant students here at my college, two of which I think are married (one I know for a fact is).
Right, I agree that sex ed is bad in some places. Hell, even w/ as informative as our schools sex ed was it was still "use a condom, get on the pill, but still DON'T DO IT." I honestly don't even remember them mentioning abortion until we were in high school. But I still don't see these movies as inherently bad. Especially for those of us educated enough to know the right decisions to make. I really enjoy watching those movies, and they don't change my opinion about having kids. But these movies reflect human nature. Like you said, "the take a difficult situation, and make it funny." But we don't just do that about pregnancy, we do it about divorce, marriage, family, travel, weddings, religion, you name it, theres usually a comedy about it. Again, unfortunately abortion really wouldn't make for a very good movie because for most of us, it was pretty uneventful. You find out, you freak out a little, and (if you're with the father) talk it over & make the decision. You go to the doctor, they tell you the procedure, you come back and have the procedure, and you're done. There's just so much more content & possibility for interest in a full blown pregnancy than an abortion. It usually ends up being a very short uneventful experience. If abortion is in a movie, its not the main focus. And I have to say the best example of abortion in movies was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. She goes in, she goes out. There's no drama about it, she just does it. Perfect. But again, its not going to be the main event.
I agree, kids need to be educated better, but I don't think its the entertainment industry's responsibility to do so. I like these kind of movies and don't really want to see them stop, because its something a majority of people can relate to, and its something that can bring us together as humans. *shrug*
