I got my deck. ^___^
The selection was kinda crappy...
But I found one I liked none-the-less.
It's the Rider-Waite Tarot deck.
Now I have to study the card meanings
and practice practice practice.

I got my deck at Barns&Noble but Borders has them to.
Book stores don't call it the occult section though its the New Age section and its part of the religious section because of the Wicca and witchcraft books ^__^
Actually the Books-A-Million in my area has an honest-to-god Occult section. It has its own header on the wall and everything. New Age is an entirely different part of the store, for some reason.

I didn't feel much of anything from the decks in the store, so I may just not feel things like that consciously.[/quote

I've never heard of that store..I don't think we have one in Washington (state)..>_>

In my opinion you don't have to memorize all the meanings, I've had mine nearly 6 years and still don't know the meanings by heart, I look at the meaning book, but I'm amazing at looking at what its says and interpreting it to the person they understand it.

Thats one of the reasons me and my friend Lin are so compatible as friends, we're both some what psychic and I'm really good at interpreting her visions. Although when ever we hang out and go some place at night or some place thats haunted it seems to make things worse...It kinda makes me curious as to what would happen if did either of those things and my fiance Josh tagged along because he's sensitive to those kind of things to...>_>

I've had mine for a few years now and I still don't know all of the meanings by heart. Don't stress about it. Just let the deck do what it wants and look it up. You may want to go through and read their meanings one by one though. One of my tarot books suggested this, and it helped a bit, it gave me a bit more confidence when I did an actual reading. I would wait a while to do readings for other people though. Wait until you've become attuned to the energies you get from your cards. Also, if you're not serious about it, the reading's going to come up funky.

In my opinion theres no special deck. Its more of which deck you are drawn too. I myself was drawn to the dragon tarot deck which I love and work well for me.

I started with the Dragon Tarot deck. It belonged to a friend, but I loved the artwork and it worked really well for me.

After some trial and error, I now the Whimsical Tarot deck. The images are based on fairy tales and children's rhymes and works well with the storyteller in me.

I've only gotten a couple of bad readings and I think it was because my friend and I both had issues at the time. So it was picking up on both and we were getting garbled messages. It cleared up when I told her to shuffle instead.

Well, I've heard tell many times that you shouldn't buy your own tarot deck. It's supposed to be bad luck of some sort.
I've bought two myself.
I saw you mentioned wondering if Borders carried that kind of stuff. They most certainly do. Borders usually has a very good "New Age" section where you can find a few different tarot decks. I personally got my first deck at a Waldenbooks.
My second deck, I bought online. I ordered it from the Llewellyn's Online website. They are a very good source if you want to get books as well. I have had trouble with that deck since I bought it. Mine and the deck's energies just don't mix like they do with my other deck.
So I completely agree with not buying tarot cards online. You should go to a store, look at what they have, and pick the one that appeals most to you. Like any other magical tools, I think it's best to pick it out in person (or meet it in person, as I prefer to say), so you know what energy you're bringing home with you.

I've heard that as well. Not that it will be bad luck, but that the cards simply won't work for you. My first deck was given to me. I'm not the greatest at working with them. But I haven't invested as much engergy into them as I probably should have. I've been extremely busy the last few years with my son.

I agree with the energy aspect of it also. I once had a copy of the Necronomicon (spelling? Sorry I'm a bit off today) given to me, that I refused to go near. The energy coming from it just did not agree with me at all. I had nightmares for weeks after receiveing it. I kept it for about two years because I was too afraid to do anything with it. But once I became pregnant with my son I "gave" it to my friend to dispose of. I wanted nothing to do with it. It's always best to pick something like that out for yourself. After all, you are the one who's going to be using it and have to deal with it for a great period of time.

Whenever I've had my tarot cards read, I was always instructed to ask a question before the reading began. By my own mind, I now assume that Tarot Cards and Angel cards are the same thing, only one has a less Conspicuous name than the other.

First off. Don't ever buy used tarot cards. You never know how people used them. This is a taboo.

Secondly never let anyone "play" with them. A set of tarot cards can become very personal items indeed. When we need answers, and these answers can not be seen, then we need to utilize other tools, such as tarot cards. As we fringe on the spiritual, the spiritual is personal.

The tarot cards do not simply give answers to all who use them. Tarot cards must be respected, and a bond created. So, the first point in selecting tarot cards is to find tarot cards that you feel a bond to. This bond can just be the individuality of the cards, that express you or perhaps any other factor such as a gut feeling that these tarot cards is the right one to buy.

When buying tarot cards online, the process is the same. Simply look at the pictures, and listen to your gut feeling, your intuition. If the cards simply stand out, even though all the pictures are all the same size, and the others fade, while this set looks vibrant in a spiritual sense, then that may be the best tarot card set to buy.

Another consideration is the price, when buying tarot cards. There are many different sets of tarot cards that you can buy. If it is your first time at tarot, remember that you don't need to go for the most expensive set.

Purchasing tarot cards should be done with respect. Though there are very cheap tarot cards available, you want to find a set that is both within your budget, and also one which you will value.

If you are a seasoned diviner, then you may want a more expensive set, though this is not necessary. Cheap and expensive sets do the same thing in essence. Though treating yourself with a good set can be fun. However, to stop yourself from selecting the most expensive, and beautiful sets, consider your budget first.

Setting a budget before buying a set of tarot cards, can allow you to stay focused, and find a set. All too often, you can get stuck on trying to find the best set or end up buying several sets. Setting a budget keeps us focused.

Another point before closing this article is that of the style and type of tarot cards, you want to buy. For example, there are tarot cards for sale that have themes or different styles of cards. These styles can be the Thoth deck or the Rider Waite deck or some of the many other styles. Though they pretty much do the same thing.

NEVER! look through a tarot deck of any sort. I canno stress this enough I looked through my mother's deck when I was little and I caught an eight year curse! My whole life started to fall apart afterwards, and in the end of the curse the owner of the deck went insane. She is okay now though she has pills.

Hehehe.
Okay so buying online is a no-no.
I wonder if Borders has an occult section. >_<
I wish there was a specific shop for the occult in our area.
If there is, I don't know about it. =[
And I would LOVE to freak out my mother. xD
How long does it take to get the hang of it usually?

well, i don't own a tarot deck persay, but i have similar cards. it took me about a week or so to get the hang of it, but my deck has a lot less cards than tarot.

I hate people touching my deck, I really like it and it's personal to me so if someone touches it and I'm their I just have to take it away from them. I have 2 decks that I got for my birthday (hope to actually pick my next) and I use one for myself and the other for other people. One I like much more than the other.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

I realise this is an old post, but since someone might actually believe it, this is utter bullshit. Since many folk in the occult community actually own Tarot decks and their lives haven't fallen apart, I think it's safe to say that catching an Eight Year Curse (what a specific curse) is nonsense.

Secondly, while there is nothing inherently wrong with touching someone else's deck (it won't make you explode or curse you or give the deck "bad vibes" unless the owner thinks it will), it's kind of like looking through someone else's text messages, diary or other personal effects without asking - it's a violation of personal space more than a violation of metaphysical law.
