Contrary to popular belief, it turns out that most cheeses aren't vegetarian. There is an enzyme used in many cheese and cheese products called "rennet" that is used to make the milk coagulate. This enzyme is obtained by slicing up cow and pig stomachs and grinding it down into the milk. Even a lot of chips with cheese flavorings have a listing of "enzymes" in the ingridents, which is often rennet.

I'm actually pretty upset at this. I had no idea that they used parts of an animal in the formation of most cheeses. Here's a website with further detail and a list of vegetarian and vegan cheeses.

http://www.natural-connection.com/resource/tnc_reference_library/cheese.html

I'm sorry if this is a repeat, but I was just so blown away by this. I feel terrible that I've been eating it.

What do you guys think? Is this completely old news that I somehow missed?

Yes and they have to get the cows pregnant once a year to produce milk. Half of the cows are males and a large sum aren't even needed and are all kept on anemic diets for about seven days and are slaughtered. And the dairy cows are made to produce more milk then their bodies can take and are "worn out" after a few years, much shorter then their usual life spans and are sold to slaughter. There is a saying that there is a chunk of veal in every glass o milk.

there are better ways to get more calcium. also, you need to worry about other minerals that help your body absorb calcium (magnesium comes to mind.) imagine your body like a living chemistry system- you need to balance everything, not just one specific part.

anyways, here are some foods that have good calcium, magnesium (and phosphorus, which i think helps, too)

(all is one cup)
raw spinach is really, really, really good for you (as all leafy green veggies are.) it has 30mg calcium, 24mg of magnesium, 15mg of phosphorus (among a lot of other good things, like fibre.)

raw okra: has 81mg calcium, 57mg of magnesium, 63mg of phosphorus

raw dandelion greens: has 103mg calcium, 20mg of magnesium, 36mg of phosphorus (i bet you have some neighbours that just pull this weed out of the ground....look, it's free! haha)

raw garlic: has 246mg calcium, 34mg of magnesium, 208mg of phosphorus

compare to your average cheddar cheese: it has 952mg calcium, 37mg of magnesium, 676mg of phosphorus

i know this "looks" better then a lowly cup of spinach, but you're not getting all that calcium without the magnesium. it you're looking for more bang for your buck, i'd suggest finding foods that are more complete on their own, instead of mixing stuff up. the best way to do that is to eat lots of vegetables and fruit.

And milk is so high in protein it actually saps it from your bones and can cause osteoporosis!

Thanks so much for this I didn't know smile

and to everyone, Dairy products are bad for us to start off anyway, they promote how important milk/yogurt/ice cream/cheese/milk chocolate are only for their money profit they want to make biggrin

the recommanded intake of calcium suggested by health organisation is faulted. If we follow the amount of calcium intake index we abosrb from our food, the easier for our bones to tire out and bone would age faster. Calcium from fruits and vegetables are enough already.

yes. not to mention the dairy industry is responsible for just as much animal abuse as the meat production industry, if not even more so.

I realize the terrible things that happen to produce dairy. However, when you're in the transition from being a meat-eater to vegetarian, its not normally a quick jump straight to vegan.

It's okay.. you don't HAVE to be a vegan to love and stop animal abuse.. eating diary is OKAY, but there are good dairy products that don't test on animals nor use animals and I'd love to give you the site where it is listed.
Some people assume to be a vegetarian means you can't eat dairy nor fish, but that is WRONG.

And NO, milk is NOT bad for you, PETA just made that lie up so their little followers could stop so THEY could make money. Milk is actually really good for your bones, no matter what "others" have said.

Well even if milk is really good for you because of the calcium, I only use a little bit in my cereal for breakfast when I run out of ricemilk(its yummier!). I perfer orange juice(your body actually absorbs and uses more of the calcium from OJ than it does milk, lol)
I want to give up cheese (or at least switch to comething like tofu cheese(cheese substitute) but my mom would never go for it. D= she's always yapping about how tight money is, and i'm not a vegan(tho borederline as i may be)
And if you read labels, you can find a safe cheese, just make sure it dosen't say enzymes or rennett or rennin. you should be good to go then! =3

I repulsed. However, though I do consume cheese, I do know that it has rennet. I am quite aware and disgusted by these facts, though I continue to eat them. I have soooo much respect for vegans. i really do. But I feel as if I'm doing an okay job as a vegetarian right now....
I wish i could cut out icky cheese, but my tastebuds are selfish

Cheese isn't vegetarian?
*Whimpers and then throws up dinner*

The cheese I ate last night says that it contains no animal rennet....should I still be suspiciouse?

Suicidal Watercolors, you might want to read this.
It's not just your tastebuds' fault.

I have known this for a while. Just use a search engine and look up animal derived foods or something like that and you can usually find nice lists of animal products.

Not all cheeses contain rennet. Read the labels - some brands specifically state that no animal enzymes are used. There are also certain kinds of cheese that never contain it, such as paneer (which is curdled with lemon juice).

Sort of on the same topic, I have just discovered how to make my own fermented cashew cheese, with vegan pro-biotics (acidophilus). I made some yesterday (after purchasing a wheel of Dr. Cow aged cashew cheese, and falling in love with the amazing taste), and it's now sitting in a warm place to culture for a few more hours/a day.

If you're into cooking, I'll post the recipe to those who miss cheese and are interested in trying something that is vegan, raw, and actually tastes like cheese.

There are only three ingredients, raw cashews, pink salt, and acidophilus.

http://thesunnyrawkitchen.blogspot.com/2008/04/not-cheeze-pleaze.html

Let me know what you think, and I'll be posting a follow up in the next day or so about my cheese when it finishes culturing.

Milk actually isn't "good for you" naturally. They fortify it with calcium and vitamin D. You could go outside and be in the sun for 15 mins for your vit. D, and eat a spinach salad for your calcium. smile
