For me, I only work with the Old Testament, being Jewish. I haven't quite finished my cover to cover read, but I've read the entire first five books (considered the most important in Judaism, and which carry the most "weight", as well as being the biggest on the lawgiving).

I've also taken some Biblical Hebrew. While I'm no Bible scholar, I will tell you Hebrew is a VERY tricky language to translate, due to how the verb forms work, and where words can be left out. My Biblical Hebrew teacher recommended the JPS and the Oxford translations, as the best, if you want to see what experts think. Thing is, you also have to look in context of the chapter. Many of the so-called "abominations" in Leviticus were solely directed as such for Jews, and not as absolute wrongs, but rather things that made you "ritually unclean", or just crimes for Jews.

I probably should read the New Testament when I'm done, but I'm not sure if I ever will. I'd want to know the best translation first, because, well, Koine Greek isn't the easiest to translate, either.

I think a long time ago I meant to read mine cover to cover, but I never got through the whole thing.

Now that I go back and re-read..I'm disliking all the sexism and contradictions I keep seeing. It makes me glad that I'm doing my own thing, really, as far as religion goes.
