It's been a busy few weeks. Between digging new beds, harvesting some veggies, planting new stuff where old stuff used to be, and pruning all the overgrown shrubbery around the house.

I've harvested my kale and spinach. Neither of which ever really took off well. The kale lived but didn't grew and actually started dying off once the heat came. The spinach I spent more time fighting off what was eating it than anything else and the storebought spinach seedlings acted the same way as the kale (which was also store bought).

My strawberries are ripening and the wild roses are blooming. yay!

Here's the garden today:

The containers in the middle are filled with herbs. Every bed has something in it be it seed or seedlings. The seedlings are still small so you can't see them. Trust me, the beds are full. In a month or so I expect it'll be veggie madness.

The tree you see on the right side is a newly planted peach tree. <3

Here's some pictures of the work i've been doing on the left side of the garden. Digging up weeds, mixing in manure and peat moss, and moving rocks and bricks to make informal beds for flowers.

I dunno. Some days I'm only out there to water things which can be around a half hour. Other days it can be an hour or two depending on what I'm doing. When I was making the new flower beds I was out there for a couple of hours.

I'd say I'm out there at least a half hour every day. (unless it's raining in which case I go yay! and do nothing)

xd

I don't think I would have to worry about watering plants. I live where it rains All. The. Time. I love it. (It gets all misty and Lords of the Rings-ey.)

Yep - it's on the west coast of North America between Washington State and Alaska. It has lots of different climates and has the only "true" desert in Canada (Osoyoos) as well as having one of the largest temperate rainforests. I fortunately live by a sound (big half salty end of a river dumping into the ocean) so I get little snow and lots of rain. It's very beautiful.

(Un)fortunately it's a very desirable place to live and any tiny amount of land is quite expensive. I miss the place were I grew up - my mother had a food garden the same size as the first floor of my house.

With your garden - how often do you need to go to the store to get produce... or can you pretty much grow all that you need?

No way. If anything it would be classified as a hobby garden. It's supplemental more than anything else. I'm doing alot more beans this year to see if I can store anything of quantity. I get enough vegetables that I can freeze a bunch and use up as needed, but I'd need a lot more space if I wanted to grow food to sustain on.

One of my gardening books (or something else) mentioned how much land a person would need to feed like a family of four for a year.. I'd have to look it up.

The only thing I really have right now is peas and lettuce. The lettuce will be gone soon (boo heat wave making my arugula bolt). I think the questions of how often would I go to the store is better for in the summer when everything it just growing. I think by july I should have plenty. or not. Gnomes keep stealing my baby plants. I've lost another tomato and eggplant.

Small update. Cucumbers, green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, and buttercup squash all have flower buds on them. Soon to be followed by tasty fruit.

I also have carrots, black eyed peas, and lima beans coming up. My dad came home with more tomato plants and a few peppers. I would have really appreciated eggplant if anything else because I already have a large quantity of the tomato and peppers already growing. oh well.

New update, with pictures! because you all love my garden porn.

I think it would be super cool to make a slideshow at the end of the season just to see the progression all at once.

I'm still getting peas, but the plants are starting to die back now. Not sure if I'll plant anything where the peas are once they're gone. I need to look up green manures and cover crops. There's tasty peas, beautiful bibb lettuce, and delicious french breakfast radishes in this picture below.

Some of you might have noticed a new structure in the background of my garden picture. This is a bamboo trellis I lashed together for my buttercups. They are starting to vine and I need to get some support ready so they can train upward instead of colonizing my entire garden like the acorn squashes did last year. This little project took me about an hour and a half to put together. It would have taken shorter time but my brother refused to help. I don't need him anyways.

Looks awesome. I forget are you the one who lives in Rhode Island or somewhere here in new England? Anyways I'd like to have my own place, alongside my boyfriend, and make a personal garden or farm with animals and food stuffs. He doesn't want to bother growing food but he's ok with animals. Who knows.

I wish I could give help or something but I've never done that before. sweatdrop I should grow at least one pot before I try and grow a garden.

How about an update? I'm gardening vicariously through this page!!! lol

The newspaper here had a story a couple of weeks ago on the effect of the terrible weather on the farming and gardening here this year. They did an interview with a man who had farmed the same land all his life, and he told how sad he was that they hadn't been able to plant corn this year. He said that this is the first year that this has happened, and he is 82 years old.

Even traveling through the country here, there are very few gardens, and the ones that are planted and growing are about 10% of their normal size. I'm sure that lots of us will try to get at least a little fall gardening done, but the prospects don't look too good. The month-long forecast is still showing rain every couple of days, and the ground is still saturated.

So, I know it's hot where you are, but please, just one picture?
