The house was dismal and gloomy, run down and left to be devoured by the elements. She was its last hope and finally defense, and to her it was freedom. The first thing that had really belonged to her, bought and paid for by her, a legacy to have and to hold.

Trivii was pleased, she knew that it would be a lot of work, cleaning, rebuilding, polishing, un-packing her few possessions, and in general claiming the house as hers. It would all work out, exactly as she planned one room at a time.

Smiling at the bleak expanse of dilapidated cottage, Trivii focussed on what each room would look like, trying to ignore the scent of mold and rotting wood. A few replaced planks, some carpet, a little lemon oil and beeswax, the place would be a gem. Trying to convince herself to overlook all the daunting little chores that would be necessary for her goal, Trivii pushed into the old parlor and deposited the first set of boxes.

It didn't take long as she didn't have much, about two hours later most of the old parlor was filled with an assortment of boxes, big heavy ones and small clinking ones, with the occasional odd piece of furniture, an end table or a chair. Her muscles ached, she was sorely in need of a bath. And thirsty enough to drain a lake.

Time to explore. Feeling childish and silly, Trivii set out to introduce herself to the old house, laughing at herself just a little, but then everyone does something stupid from time to time. So she laughed and being alone, she had no qualms in opening a conversation with herself. Taking inventory and making notes on what should be done first.

"Well, Lady. We definitely start with the first floor. Bottom up." Nodding she went fishing through her purse for her scarf and notepad. Tying back her short silver hair under a cheerful red bandanna, she put herself to work.

"First. We are going to Clean everything." Trivii jotted it down, as she meandered deeper towards the back of the house and batted at a cobweb. "Then we need the Kitchen restored top to bottom... lets just see what that means in this case."

Lifting the door from where it hung on the frame, Trivii shifted it so it was propped against the wall outside the kitchen. Then promptly sank to the floor and gawked. "Oh dear... what have I gotten myself into?"

January 1st 2008

Dear Diary,

About two weeks have gone passed since I moved into my new home, and I have to admit that it's not what I wanted it to be. I'm still hopeful that it'll polish up to be a gem, I have faith in myself and my ability to work hard but there is still a lot left to be done. I've worked my hands raw scrubbing at what must be a hundred years of filth and residue, and I'm beginning to think that no matter how clean the place is, more grime will just crawl back up from between the cracks.

Its Dis-heartening. But I have managed to claim some time for myself, getting out of the house has helped, even if it seams that all I'm doing is buying more cleaning supplies. I've almost cleared out enough that I would feel comfortable having a contractor come in and tell me about everything else.

But all that is last years dirt under the rug. Each year should begin with a new perspective, not necessarily through over analyzing the previous year, but by understanding where you want to be at the next years end. Tabula Rasa means "Clean Slate" or a fresh start, and personally I don't feel you can have a fresh start without making in a few observations of the world around you.

So I took today for myself, it was pretty enough that I could go out and get to know the town. So I take a walk. This last year has been a battle for me, I’m usually a very spiritual person, however this last year its become harder and harder for me to find time to myself. I can't begin to speculate on how long I needed to take the walk, only that it bathed my senses and by the time I returned to my hovel I felt refreshed, like I would be able to conquer anything life through at me. I could feel nature rising up around me, the energy was lovely and abundant. A good omen.

I also promised myself that I would hire a Maid, I am never working that hard on this house again. Maybe tomorrow I'll take some time to do some star gazing?

Cleaning House

Even the thought of bleach was beginning to make her eyes water, her sinuses hurt, and her lungs burn, but at long last the kitchen was clean. Hell the damn room was sterile enough a surgeon could use it for a tonsillectomy.

The lanky form leaned back against the worn out kitchen cabinet, “White glove please Sergeant, I promise not a speck of dust or bacteria to be found.” A clean breeze drifted in through the open window, the glass had developed a haze with age, and the sill was cracked, but it was sparkling and lemon fresh.

Trivii flicking over the room she smiled at her accomplishment, and bemoaned everything that still needed doing. “Wet rot under the window, dry rot on the floor, new sub floor, install travertine, replace all the molding, upgrade the fixtures, new porcelain sink, refrigerator, oven/range, and dish washer. New maple cabinets both upper and lower, a hammered copper counter top, new door leading out to the garden, and stained glass in the window.” Listening to herself list everything that still needed doing, she pushed back and lifted herself to sit on the existing cracked Formica counter top.

“And we are hiring a maid. A nice respectful person who can take care of everything I don’t have time for.” Turning to look out on the rest of the house the cat girl gnawed on her pouty lower lip. “I should go to the bank and see if I can afford to get a cleaning service in here, that way we can try to find a handyman.”

Sighing she plucked her bottle of water off the counter next to her and twisting the lid open, sipped slowly at its contents, no longer cold the water did the trick and Trivii grimaced. The rest of the house wasn’t near as bad as the kitchen, but that didn’t make finding a cleaning service sound any less appealing.

"Maybe I'll call the Ghost Busters while I'm at it, get everything taken care of." Polishing off her water, she closed her eyes and thumped her head back against the cupboard. "An exterminator.... gods, I'm certain that there is so much that I haven't even thought of, where the hell is my faery god mother when I need her?"

Hopping down off the counter she started out into the dining room, "helping Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty of course. Why didn't I think of that?" Confronting the legions of dust bunnies and veils of cobwebs she sighed, "Blue light special on isle 15, everything must go." And the cat girl set to work, rolling up an oriental rug that she might be able to get restored. Then taking up a broom she took a stance against the armies of darkness that would have done Bruce Campbell proud.

Dear Diary,

Word of the Day: Affirmation (af·fir·ma·tion)

Function: noun

1 a: the act of affirming b: something affirmed : a positive assertion
2: a solemn declaration made under the penalties of perjury by a person who conscientiously declines taking an oath

I don't know why I complain so much about this house, I knew what I was getting when I made my choice. It was my decision to keep the place and not level it. It has been run down for more than five years, abandoned. The real estate advert listed the place as dilapidated. This has been all my choice, I made every decision. Its mine, and I'm proud of what I've done. The kitchen was the most work, and I had already planned on getting a professional in to take care of fixing the bathrooms.

Having defeated the dining room, front hall and small parlor. Not mentioning the major triumph I had over the kitchen. I think I'll be done with the first floor this week, cleaning at any rate, the restoration might take a year and I'm prepared for that.

I have to think of today as an affirmation.

When we have fallen out with friends or colleagues, the way back to reconciliation can seem worlds away. Pride and hurt can cause us to decide that the first approach will never come from our side, but the same sentiments are often experienced by the other party. I suspect that this house I now occupy was abused for a long time before it was abandoned.

To arrive at reconciliation, we may have to explore the avenues of negotiation and compromise. If we can find no sensible and eloquent go-between, then we have to open negotiations on our own behalf. With tact and sensitivity, we can invite the other party to meet with us on neutral ground, to discuss the causes of dispute and each other's views, an invitation to come down from the lofty heights of separation and agree on a truce. I'm going to have to compromise my desires with the basic skeleton of this place.

The aim is not to shame or coerce the other into capitulation, but to allow both parties to bring their differences to the light of day so that they may be seen as they really are, rather than as they are emotionally experienced. This perspective may be difficult to maintain, especially if anger or grief is involved. Both my personality, and the soul of the house have to be allowed to shine.

The Handyman

Handymen are like macho husbands for hire. There are a number of different issues that need to consider when hiring a handyman, just like choosing a spouse. Are they qualified? Finding a qualified contractor, one that wants to do the job, in the time period required, is far from easy. After all, Handymen don't just fix squeaky doors and holes in the drywall, they are carpenters who can do almost anything. The right one, can also give some advice on preventative tips for the during the cold seasons and also day-to-day ideas.

Trivii was just beginning to realize that she may have bitten off more than she could chew, sometime around the third Handyman she had walked through the place getting 'free estimates' when what she really wanted to get was a free massage.

The seventh was do to arrive any minute, and a glass of wine was starting to sound really good, another round of, "Miss Viscarin, please... Relax... breathe... and let Jerry/Jim/Robert/Fred, lead you down the garden path to home repair. I have done a thousand jobs, worse than yours!" Was starting to sound like torture, truly cruel and unusual punishment.

But she was doing her job as the consumer, getting prices, getting references, and getting advice.

When the brass knocker rattled on the front door, the graceful home owner slid to her feet and painfully trudged up to the door. And forcing a smile she pulled the door open, stunned. Standing before her was the most delectable piece of man-flesh she had seen in years. Not of any cat descended race, but long limbed, lean and muscled with dark, dark hair and skin the color of a cappuccino. When she finally managed to pull her eyes up to his her smile was real, not forced; and his eyes dear gods the oceans weren't that blue.

Purring she extended her hand, "Triveni Viscarin, You're Aidan right? With Old World Repairs?"

Smiling Mr. Fix-It accepted her hand, "Yes ma'am. I understand you have a large job you wanted an estimate on?" Shifting his clip-board under one arm he glanced about. "I have to admit I was curious when someone finally bought the old Richards place."

"And here I thought I was insane for buying it, please come in, and we'll get started on the walk-through." Holding the door open Trivii stood to one side while he followed her in. "have you ever been here before?"

"Yes ma'am, I use to play with the Richard's youngest Dan." Pulling up his clip-board Aidan glanced around taking in the damage, wear and tear. "It was in better shape back then."

"Call me Trivii. It's fantastic that you were here before, then you can tell what the place use to be like," snatching her list of a makeshift table in the entry hall she turned to face him, "And we can discuss what needs to be done, Do you want to start up-stairs or down?" Grateful for her châtelaine training that allowed her to be brisk and professional at times like this, Trivii strove to keep the topic on the house while they went over everything.

PIXIES!!!

Well, Aidan and his brother Will had started work on the kitchen renovation and progress was being made. Trivii smiled feeling all the building blocks of her dream home slowly start to fall into place. The Cabinets had been torn out, the appliances disposed of, and if the current racket was anything to go by, the beautiful man had started tearing up the old, water-logged sub floor and mildewed lath and plaster.

Smiling the cat girl set up the folding table in the dining room, pulling out a gallon of spring water and a coffee maker, she stared at the coffee she had bought for the men, reading the instructions she put the filter in the machine, and opened the can of Maxwell House premium dark roast and inhaled the aroma... Oh yeah that would wake the dead. She glanced at the door to the kitchen and quickly ladled three scoops into the filter, closing the door and opening the top to pour in the water, she slapped the top closed, hit 'brew' and fortifying herself strode to the kitchen door and waited to be noticed. Enjoying the view as Mr. Fix-It and his brother worked up a sweat.

Will spotted her first, lowering his pry bar and smiling. "Need something?"

Embarassed Trivii shook her head, "Just wanted to let you two know, I have a pot of coffee on in the next room. Help yourselves okay?"

Brown eyes sparkling Will nodded, "Thanks Miss Viscarin."

"Not a problem Will, If either of you need me, I'm up stairs pulling up carpet... And please call me Trivii."

"Yes ma'am."

Flushing Trivii shook her head and left them to their work hearing the faint echo of Will and Aidan laughing over something as she climbed the stairs. Probably laughing at her. She sighed reaching the second floor, not much to do except start gutting things, put plastic up over broken windows and wallow in, what she was starting to recognize as a crush.

Sinking to the floor in the master bed room Trivii plucked at the gawd-awefull shag rug that had probably been lavender in a past life but now looked gray and was tinged green from some sort of fungus that had taken root. The new vantage point allowed her to see the room in much better detail, chipped paint, pealing wallpaper, and loose molding under the window seat. It looked like the entire panel had been pulled off and the put back on without the benefit of glue or nails. "Lovely."

Pushing to her hands and knees, she crawled across the room to the window, touching the panel that was harder to pull off than it looked. Standing the cat girl wiped her hands on her already dirty jeans and strode from the room in search of her tool box. Only to return a few minutes later carting the thing, it rattling and sounding like a jar full of screws. She dropped it and then lowered herself in front of the window, dug out slotted tip screwdriver and set to work prying the dumb panel away from the window.

Several minutes, a few curses, and three scraped knuckles later it finally came free with the stumach turn crunch of glass breaking. "What'd I break?" Trivii dropped her screwdriver and removed the panel, and only shock stopped her from screaming.

"Fearies.... No, too small.... PIXIES." Trivii whispered completely breathless, had she gone insane? Was she hallucinating? How could there be Pixies in her house?

As though responding to the warmth of her hand the little purple creature started to wake up, opening long slanted eyes and staring at her, it zipped out of her hand and across the room looking baleful. Eager to touch the other two, Trivii gathered them into her hands. The Blue one woke with a start clawing her arm when it tried to get away, and the black one made no pretense. Biting her before vanishing back into the moth eaten drapes.

"Oh my......"

Dear Diary,

Ever feel that one song can describe your whole life?

Where is the moment we needed the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Well you need a blue sky holiday
The point is they laugh at what you say
And I don't need no carryin' on

You had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
The camera don't lie
You're coming back down and you really don't mind
You had a bad day

(Oh.. Holiday..)

Sometimes the system goes on the blink
And the whole thing turns out wrong
You might not make it back and you know
That you could be well oh that strong
And I'm not wrong

So where is the passion when you need it the most
Oh you and I
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost

Cause you had a bad day
You're taking one down
You sing a sad song just to turn it around
You say you don't know
You tell me don't lie
You work at a smile and you go for a ride
You had a bad day
You've seen what you like
And how does it feel for one more time
You had a bad day
You had a bad day

Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day
Had a bad day

Reading in the Dark

Mystic
He was fond of libraries. They offered a sort of reverent quiet that could not be found anywhere else. There was always a subtle darkness to it, though well lit enough to not strain the eyes. There was also the scent of dust and frail, moth-wing pages. He was not certain exactly how he knew that part, but he simply did.

Perhaps it was a memory lost, or something he gleaned from his bond with Reyna. Regardless, it was there and it was something he treasured. It also tickled him that he could very nearly always find a spot all his own that no one ventured into. That, and it seemed as though fewer people frequented the library he visited during the day.

While the trek in the midday sun proved to strain his senses, the quiet and the comfort of shadowed rows of books was a sweet, sweet balm that sheltered him from the light of day and calmed his nerves.

Trivii
Trivii pushed into the library giving the gloom within a hesitant sweep with her opal eyes, startling at the thud as the heavy door fell shut behind her; and again at the harsh glare from the librarian. Quickening her pace to a ground eating stride as she spotted the card catalog, eager to leave the old woman to her labors.

The cat girl felt quite simply put, like a criminal fleeing from justice in her effort to find a bit of solitude amongst the shelves, Trivii horridly tugged out the drawer of the catalog almost dislodging it from its rail. the sensation that someone was observing her actions left an ache between her shoulders, though Trivii knew that she was just being paranoid.

Carpentry....
Idiots Guide To,
Quick Tricks,
Do it Yourself,

Borrowing a slip of paper from the library Trivii quickly scribbled the section and author name after the title and thrust the drawer back into place, careful not to slam it, ever weary of the librarian. It would be an easy matter of cutting through row 36 to get to the back wall, increasing her stride she started to careen down the seemingly abandoned row, before jolting to a halt in an effort not to plow into the rows only occupant. Short silvery hair swishing over her shoulders, Trivii blinked in shock.

Mystic
Mystic peered over at the woman for a moment. Surely if she was going to stare, he had a right to as well! His eyes brightened with a bit of mischief as he stooped to place a book back on the shelves before simply phasing completely through to the other side to find another to keep him company.

Trivii
The Pixies.... It had to be the stupid Pixies from the house. They had at last successfully stolen her mind. Trivii exited the end of the row at a much more sedate pace, careful of the possibility that the shadows might have substance. She glanced up the next row and the bottom dropped out of her stomach.

"Hello there, I am terribly sorry about running you down." She smiled and turned to face the back wall she began looking for her books. "My name is Trivii." She felt so completely lame. She was talking to a phantom, a ghost, a spectre. She had finally well and truly lost her mind.

Mystic
Mystic arched a brow and eyed the other woman a bit warily before inclining his head slightly in greeting. So much for quiet. 'I am Mystic,' he stated softly in his quiet, soft telepathic speech.

Trivii
Biting her lip Trivii tried to dis-regard the odd feeling that came along with his introduction, and flicked her odd eyes up at him again. "Mystic... You look like you're familiar with the library..." She cringed inwardly, yeah, like a ghost wouldn't know his way around. Real smooth Triv.

"What I mean to say is... Would you by any chance know where I could find a... well... the section on carpentry?" Feeling her heart sink Trivii knew she was making a fool of herself... Mystic couldn't be a ghost... ghosts didn't exist.

Mystic
Mystic chuckled quietly to himself. The woman fairly radiated unease. 'I .. don't exactly work here, but I could show you,' he answered as he gazed over at her intently. He paused for a moment to put away the book he held before rounding the corner of one of the long shelving units.

He paused from a moment before he peeked through the shelves entirely and peered down at the woman. '... are you coming?'

Trivii
Swallowing Trivii nodded, eyeing the solid-seeming man, Mystic. "Ye-yeah. I'm hot on your heals.... and thanks... the Librarian is scary."

Mystic
'She's rather pleasant, I think,' he replied as he led the woman towards another section of the library. He finally came to a stop and glanced up. 'Anything in particular you're looking for?' he asked quietly as his form seemed to dissolve somewhat and his feet merged into one long, willowy tail as he floated up towards the higher shelves.

Trivii
Imaging the Librarian as a pleasant enough person, Trivii smiled slowly, a careful and chagrin expression. "I just bought an old cottage at the edge of town... there's a lot of water damage, both wet and dry rot. I need to clean it out so I thought I would look at maybe a few books on flooring."

She held out her list, "Something like these. Maybe a book on how to hire a contractor." She let out a purring trill of laughter, self deprecating. "I hope I didn't interrupt your perusal Mystic. It wasn't my intent." As always good manners were winning out over embarrassment.

Mystic
He trailed his fingertips down the spines of a few books before selecting a few to hand down to the woman. She struck him as pleasant enough a young lady, but her nervousness gave her away. He seemed to smirk faintly as he settled back down upon human feet and glanced at her curiously.

'You seem a bit.. spooked,' he informed her with a certain playfulness in his tone of voice, 'Seen a ghost?'

Trivii
Horrified and embarrassed Trivii blanched. "I uh... well..." She swallowed, Real articulate there Triv.

"That is to say... aren't you...a?" Wishing she could smack herself in the forehead, Trivii gave up and shut up.

Mystic
Mystic laughed. Typically, he would have been highly offended, but the look that was written across her face..! Poor girl. 'No dear,' he replied as he once more regained control of himself, 'I am hardly a ghost, but don't feel too badly. You're not the first to confuse me for one. Doubtfully the last.'

Trivii
"Can we blame exhaustion? I'm normally very perceptive." Slumping against the book shelf Trivii looked simply apologetic. "At the risk of sounding rude, if your not a ghost, then what exactly?" Her nerves were on fire with the need to fidget, but she knew that Mystic probably already thought she was daft, she didn't need to compound the situation.

Mystic
He titled his head as he peered over at her thoughtfully as he crossed his arms over his chest. 'I could ask you the same,' he murmured as he idly motioned towards her ears. He settled himself back against one of the shelves as he contemplated answering.

'I am,' he started, pausing for a moment as he thought of the best way to explain, '.. well.. a Shadow.'

Trivii
"Hrrmmmm well I see... I guess. Well I've never encountered a shadow quite as substantial as yourself." Looking him over she filed the information away for later reference, and presented her most charming smile.

"Like yourself, I am exactly as I appear, a cat girl. Bakaneko. Some might say that I'm a Cat Demon, but they would be wrong." Turning in a neat circle, Trivii presented a mock bow. "No demonic powers, just Trivii... And I am terribly sorry if I offended you."

Mystic
Mystic snickered quietly to himself. 'I am of a rare breed, I suppose you could say.' He squinted over at the cat girl, but his eyes seemed to light up with amusement at her antics. He had met two other cat girls, so to speak, but both of them truly were demonic in nature. He would have felt that if she were. It pleased him to an extent that she wasn't.

'I don't suppose you like jewelry at all..?' he asked tentatively.

Trivii
Unique she though almost purring with pleasure. Mystic certainly wouldn't be a demanding sort of acquaintance. But she gave his topic changing inquiry some thought as with an abashed look she nodded. "I've never been in a position to own beautiful things, but I have always enjoyed seeing jewels and bobbles on other people." Casting a glance about she cast a sly look at Mystic. "You could say that I've done a lot of window shopping."

Mystic
'Window shopping, hm?' Mystic answered with a tone of voice that once more hinted at teasing. He tilted his head and regarded her for a long moment. 'Well then.' he began as he reached out towards her with one hand outstretched. He seemed to clasp at nothing at all between his thumb and forefingers, but then a jet black business card appeared.

The card was seemingly blank when he initially handed it over to her, but once in her hands and out of his, a silver ink rose to the surface with the name 'Twilight Designs' written in scrolling letter work across it.

'It's a jewelry shop.. I.. frequent it often, should you ever feel inclined to do some.. window shopping,' he informed her in his ever-quiet voice, 'Perhaps you could stop and say hello, as well?'

Trivii
Accepting the business card Trivii smiled enjoying the teasing, "I think I can manage to poke my head in." She examined the card before tucking it in her back pocket. "I'm not apposed to saying hello either."

She contemplated asking another question, then deciding against it, she figured she could always find out later. "I should let you get back to your books." Her voice was reluctant and her eyes were friendly. "I need to get my books and head home, Its been nice meeting you Mystic. I'll definitely drop in at Twilight Designs."

Mystic
Mystic's eyes seemed to upturn into a smile, however slightly, and shone brightly with both amusement and pleasure at her words. 'Then I look forward to when we meet again,' he answered, 'And good luck with your project.'

Dear Diary,

Life can deal us strange hands at times, Pixies in the Master Bedroom, and animate Shadows at the library. I don't suspect that I can see much more in this little town that will surprise me.

The Contractors found a small wooden trunk under the stairs when they were laying new treads, haven't been able to pick the lock yet, but it looks like a time capsule.. Probably just as old as the cottage.

Looking for a Job, nothing exciting. No great prospects.

What else should I write?

Oh... Might be getting a roommate. We'll see how that works out, never saw myself as a land lady, but the receptionist from the Tribune is looking for an apartment, and I offered. Don't know what I was thinking, might change my mind.

"Trivii? You got a minute?"

Looking up from her tea the cat girl reviewed the look on Aidan and Will's faces. "Sure, come talk to me." The purring trill in her voice was concerned, "What's wrong?"

Clearing his throat Aidan looked at his brother, the back at his employer. "The floor in the kitchen is in real bad shape, I know you were prepared to replace everything but it looks like termites have built homes."

Will interrupted, "We'll have to get an exterminator in here before we can look at the structural situation."

"Alright, I was planning on getting an exterminator to come in, make the arrangements." Trivii looked from Will to his pale eyed older brother. "That isn't everything is it?"

"It will require major construction to make it habitable; the termites look like they have attacked parts of the floors in two different rooms and to different effect; as for the repairs, one site has convenient access and is easy to fix, one has inconvenient access and will require replacement of a number of short pieces, and the last site has a hole clean through the floor about 8" in diameter! I'll go through the process -- it's not difficult, but time-consuming" Aidan grimaced.

Trivii rubbed at her face and took another swallow of peppermint infusion. "How long will I be out of the Kitchen?"

"About two weeks. Conservatively."

"Okay."

Will leaned back against the wall, "Just okay?"

"Yes. Okay. The rest of the repairs are minor, I don't mind spending a little extra on the kitchen."

Aidan smiled slowly. "Great, the windows are being brought in next week, once we get those installed, we can get an exterminator to tent the place, and nuke the termites."

Smiling the homeowner tucked her feet up under her in the chair. "Sounds like a plan to me, and in the meanwhile, since you can't get anymore work done in the kitchen, just get started on the next project."

Dear Diary,

There is a tree out back, surrounded by bramble and weeds, there is something about it, almost magical. I'm thinking about writing a story for 'A New World' if there were ever a tree like a Dryad, this would be it.

Trivii`
Trivii moved cautiously, eying the signs and doors and then the card Mystic had given her. A sinking feeling that she had gotten lost permeating through her she strolled further and further down an odd side street.

She was just about to double back and ask that odd old man at the corner for directions, when she spotted it, almost completely shrouded in early afternoon gloom she would have missed it if not for the shimmer off spotless windows.

Twilight Designs

Lengthening her stride the cat girl could do little enough to control her curiosity, what would a jewelry store frequented by a living shadow be like? Trivii smiled and double checked her purse for her wallet as she loped across the street, then straightening the sleeves or her harem like blouse, she coiled her tail tightly around her waist and ventured in.

She was careful, slow, and methodical as she took her first few steps into the shop, giving her eyes a chance to adjust.

Reyna Crelos
"Welcome to Twilight Designs." Reyna offered the other woman a smile from where she sat at her desk busily tinkering away at her latest creation. Mystic was there as well, but unseen. He did, however, make his presence known and faded into view just behind his guardian when he recognized the woman that had tentatively entered the shop.

'Hello again, Miss Trivii.'

Reyna arched a brow and seemed to smirk slightly. Out making friends, hm? Who'd have thought..

Trivii`
Blinking her slit pupils focussed in on the duo as they became use to the lighting, and a relieved smile flashed across her face as she nodded to them. "Thank you... Hello again Mystic, I thought I could take a look at the shop."

Looking around her, she dug pointed teeth into the delicate flesh of her lower lip. "I have to say, its not what I was expecting." Walking over to the glass counter Trivii knelt to better peruse the merchandise. The cat girl didn't really know what she had been expecting, something with a more mysterious aura maybe.

Reyna Crelos
'Well,' he began as he floated away from Reyna and over towards Trivii to linger near her side, 'It is a jewelry store.' His eyes glittered with a hint of mischief as he shifted slightly to stand on human feet and crossed his arms over his chest. 'But don't worry. We keep all the ghosts and other such monsters in the back room,' he teased.

Reyna stifled a quiet giggle and ducked her head, content for the time being to not interfere and simply observe. It was often she bore witness to her shadow willingly being social. She would certainly have to pester him later about the identity of his new lady friend.

Trivii`
Laughing at herself Trivii tossed Mystic a grin. "You caught me. I was half expecting to see a mummy propped in the corner or a selection of Heirloom Gypsy jewelry." Color touched her pale cheeks as she glanced around again.

"Much to my chagrin, even expecting all that I came planning on buying something." Moving to a small display of rings propped on a counter she looked at Mystic from the corner of her eye. "So... what would you suggest?"

Silently she added the reminder to herself. I'll also need a locking jewelry box before I go home.

Reyna Crelos
'Hmm... well,' he began slowly as he gazed down at the case of rings, 'I rather like the ones that are carved entirely of gemstones, but getting them in the right size is always a trick.' He paused for a long moment as he considered the various pieces of jewelry on display for a moment more.

'.. what color is your favorite..?'

Trivii`
Nibbling at her lip she liked the idea of a gemstone ring, the cat girl looked down at her naked hands, long fingers with their claws retracted. "I like warm colors. Reds, Oranges, Copper is my favorite metal, even though its not really rare or precious." Laughing she slid her fingertip across a row of rings. "Basically anything that clashes with my natural coloring."

Looking carefully at the selection, Trivii liked that almost everything she saw varied in price from dirt cheap to ouch.

"What would you buy if you were me?" Trivii asked impulsively. Most people put her in blue and pewters, but the cat girl suspected Mystic might be different, she simply couldn't explain why she felt so comfortable with him.

This wasn't normal for her at all.

Reyna Crelos
Mystic's expression softened into what seemed to be a charming smile. Despite his lack of a proper face, the sentiment was clear. He reached through the case entirely and unlocked it manually. He drew aside the glass and peered for a moment down at the selection.

'.. warm colors do suit you best, I should think,' he murmured in quiet thought before selecting a ring carved entirely of agate and one other that wasn't quite so delicate. It was of intricately wound gold wire and a smooth, bezel set cabochon of carnelian. 'Perhaps one of these..?' he offered as he extended the rings to her.

Trivii`
Trivii's breath caught and burned her lungs as her opaline eyes flitted from one jewel to the next. The agate ring, or the elaborate twist of gold and an odd red-orange stone. The sediment like layers of the agate glowed and made her fingers ache to try it on.

But the orange stone, was deep and reminded her of life, if a life could have a color that would be it. Carefully she accepted both rings from the Shadow, sliding the agate band onto her left thumb and then praying it would fit, she slid the larger orange stone onto her right ring finger. And Stared.

She wanted them both, but reluctantly she removed the agate band, and handed it back to Mystic. "What do you call this stone?" Looking at her hand the subtle throb that echoed up her arm. Even if it meant starving for a month, she wasn't leaving Twilight Designs without it.

Glancing rapidly up at Mystic a lock of hair half obstructed one eye while the other glittered up at him.

Reyna Crelos
'Carnelian,' he replied before trailing off as he eyed the stone now that it was on her hand. It seemed out of place somehow. His eyes widened slightly as he glanced from the ring up to Trivii. Did she notice? Perhaps not yet, but he knew quiet suddenly that she certainly would. And soon.

'Ah.. perhaps not that one, maybe something more delicate?' he murmured as he pulled yet another ring from the display, though it was slightly smaller in size and boasted a multi-faceted, clear, red stone instead.

Trivii`
Trivii hesitated, and without relinquishing the carnelian, examined the delicate intricacies of the other ring. It was lovely, and any other day she might have leaped at the chance to buy it. But the deep red just didn't have the 'life' that the orange stone hinted at.

"It is lovely..." Trailing off and extending her other hand she caressed the faceted surface, prepared to let either Reyna or Mystic push for the better sale. "Tell me about it?"

Reyna Crelos
Mystic looked as though he wanted to speak, but instead he found himself choking on his words which had stuttered to an awed silence. His brow furrowed something and he glanced away as the stone within the ring that Trivii still had her possession all but burst to life.

Black tendrils surrounded it, curling and coiling about in a fury of undulating movement until it finally freed itself from the confines of the setting of the jewelry it had been trapped within.

The Shadow was at a loss for words. He had by no means intended to burden his new found friend with such a gift.

"Well that was unexpected."

Mystic nearly jumped at the sound of his guardian's voice. He had nearly forgotten she was even there in the first place.

Trivii`
The black aura forcing the vibrant orange stone from golden trappings, caught Trivii's attention more than Mystics stuttering silence or Reyna's droll words. Reeling backwards she stared at the stone, swallowed as her opalesque eyes widened sharply, shifting over Mystic to the woman.

"What...?" Her voice barely a whisper terror radiated from the cat girl.

Reyna Crelos
Reyna pushed away from her desk and made her way to where both Trivii and her own Shadow stood. "It's just a wisp. Nothing to be frightened of," she insisted. Idly she leaned over against Mystic's side in a casual sort of manner. "Aww... I remember when you were that tiny."

Mystic ducked his head and for a moment it looked almost as though he were blushing a bit.

Trivii`
"Like Mystic?" Her voice trilled off half purring. "A living shadow."

Trivii closed her eyes dazed.

"What does this mean?"

Reyna Crelos
The demoness chuckled quietly as she reached to gently pat the other woman on the back as though to lend some sort of reassurance. "Pretty much means your stuck with it. Kinda the same way I'm stuck with Mystic."

The elder shadow looked rather perturbed and voiced his irritation. 'That is not an 'it' it's a 'she' and you're not .... stuck with me.'

If he had had a mouth, Reyna was quite certain that he would've been pouting. She smirked and leaned in close to kiss his cheek and ruffle his hair the way one would a small child. "Of course not, sweetness!"

Trivii`
Slowly anxiety began to fade from Trivii's silvery eyes, and she spared a look at the duo. "She..." Awe gradually overrode all else.

Giving Mystic a soft smile the cat like girl allowed curiosity to guide her as she extended a hand to the swirling darkness spilling from Carnelian.

"This is a hundred times better than jewelry... But, what do I do... with her?"

Reyna Crelos
Reyna smirked and glanced towards Mystic in turn sighed. He was meant to explain. Of course. 'Just... keep her close. She really only requires your presence. Nothing more. We are a largely self reliant save for our need for a soul bond..'

Trivii`
"I can do that... Uhhh what do I owe you for her?"

It was awkward and she would no doubt have a hundred thousand questions for both Reyna and Mystic later but for now, her mind could only draw a blank.

Excitedly closing the distance to her new Guardian the slip of orange stone, glittered from the writhing mess of her own shadows.

Cupping her hand to pull the little one close to herself, Trivii felt a small portion of her reserve crumble.

Reyna Crelos
Reyna shot the other woman a fanged grin. "My boss would pitch a fit if I sold her to you. We don't uh... collect payment on wayward stones that attach themselves to customers," she explained.

Trivii`
Thunderstruck. Trivii couldn't resist Reyna's smile and returned it shyly.

"Well then," tossing a sardonic look back to Mystic, "I guess I'll have to buy the agate band, won't I?" Gathering Carnelian closer she straightened. Not knowing what else to say, but in fact knowing that she would have little other business at Twilight Designs while she was still reeling from the awakening of her own wisp.

April 19th, 2008

Dear Diary,

It was with a strange sense of Deja Vu that I walked into Twilight Designs, and a profound sense of Awe when I walked out. Seeing Mystic again had been my main priority that day, but it evolved. As priorities are want to do.

I didn't walk out with a small trinket like I had planned, but my own miniature Mystic. This vibrant orange stone called carnelian had lept from its setting and enveloped me in its tendrils of shadow.

A Wisp, the woman Reyna had called it.

But I didn't care, the moment I saw the stone I knew, that I would make it mine. I do wonder though... Do all guardians feel that same compulsion?

Well at any rate, to my untrained hand and eye, this is what Carnelian looked like while in her setting... She wasn't there very long,

Straightening up from her crooked half-curled position on the moth eaten sofa, Trivii's back protested, and judging by the noise upstairs the pixies were still in a temper over the renovations to the master suite. She groaned and rolled her head on her shoulders, flinching as the vertebra cracked and popped like cracker jacks.

She hit the old, musty oriental rug on all fours, arching her back and climbing to her feet. The cat girl checked for the small orange stone, it was still in the small clothe pouch she had put it in, glowing with life from the depths of its black aura of twisting shadows.

"I have to get out of this house for awhile." No longer phased by talking to herself, the cat girl took the stairs up to the master suite, and prepared for a face off the with trio of winged doom when she attempted to claim her shoes, she was shocked to find the chamber spotless, sparkling with the frost that the triplets usually left in their wake, and completely without the wreckage and havoc she had been expecting.

"I'm leaving now ladies... I'm just getting my shoes... then you can have the house to yourselves." Silence greeted her, but Trivii knew better than to trust it, and advanced into the room with caution, carefully looking both ways before tugging open the closet.

Still nothing.

"Alright..." She leaned in and swiftly collected her sandals before straightening and glancing around again. "Where are you guys?" The frost was starting to thaw leaving a film of moisture and the faint smell of mildew.

Darting for the door she closed the room after her as she tugged on her sandals and descending the stares at a dead run, the cat girl swiped her keys and purse of the table and was out the door, careful to not slam the newly paned leaded glass, as she closed and locked the door, engaging the security system.

Hours drug on one fading into the next as she returned her library books and purchased a post office box. She was finally stopping by the electronics outfitters for the latest anti-virus for her laptop and another storage cartridge for her digital camera when a young woman rushed out of the store and slammed into her.

"Watch where you going!" The woman snarled at Trivii.

Stammering Trivii was talking to empty space by the time "Excuse me" Slipped passed her lips.

*****

It was late by the time Triv got home, disengaging the alarm and turning her key in the lock the cat girl yawned and moved blindly into the breakfast nook where her laptop sat waiting bypassing the table in the hall where she normally dropped her things she set a kettle on for tea and powered up her laptop.

Fun, time to get to work.

She pulled the clothe pouch off from around her neck and dumped the stone rather unceremoniously into her open hand, setting the Carnelian in the sand filled dish next to her computer and cracking her knuckles.

This shadowy wisps clung faintly to the hands of her guardian as Trivii tried to settle in to work, giving the slow air that radiated Nap Time the stone shimmered.

Trivii's mind was a complete blank. She knew what she was supposed to be writing about, and that her editor expected it no later than Friday, but the words simply wouldn't come.

The Kettle whistled and she knew she had been staring at the blank screen for fifteen minutes.

One cup of tea, and two sentences later, the cat girl groaned.

"What in heavens name am I doing?"

A giggling slightly snide voice hummed, "Not writing anything thats for sure."

The bottom dropped out of her stomach as she turned at looked at the hovering sprite in black. "Leave me alone Nettle."

"Now why would I want to do that?"

Focusing away from the pixie and her writing, the cat girl went digging into her messenger bag for her new security software. When her hand encountered something glossy and thin, she pulled it out and stared at a photo that hadn't been there that mourning.

It was her, but she was surrounded by a black vapor, and in a place she had never seen before. The air exited her lungs in a rush as she felt like she was being strangled and then the world went hazy... Like being outside her body, the next she was staring into her own face in another photo, in this photo she was at her table.

The other her had narrowed amber eyes with slit pupils, not vibrant opals....
