{I'm not done yet!} Emblem whispered, turning around in his egg. The confining space made him feel oddly comforted, and he didn't want to leave-not yet, at least. The young dragon opened his eyes, looking at the creamy surface enclosing him. I don't want to leave.

With a plop, a piece of something falls on the hatchling's head. With a snarl, she whirled around to face the older female. Well, pal, she thinks, if it's a war you want, it's a war you'll get!! {YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!} she screams, launching herself clumsily at the elder female, nipping her toes and ankle.

Cart padded curiously over to the green and orange egg, stepping carefully over the warring hatchling that was attacking Khala. {Come on out when you're ready, little one,} he said. {Here, I'll leave a piece of meat out for you.} He dropped a piece of meat next to the egg, then, looking carefully back and forth, rubbed it over the egg. {Come on out! It tastes as good as it smells!}

Emblem sat in his egg as it was wiggled back and forth by Cart's rubbing. He cracked open an eye, pawing gently at the smooth surface that surrounded him. The young dragon made a small noise as a shaft of light opened. {What's this?} he asked, tilting his head at this new thing.

{Erm...} Cart considered what the hatchling could mean. {Um...well, that bright thing is called "light"...but the thing I'm waving in your face is called "food." Oi, little female biting off Khala's toes! Put a rock in it and eat, okay?! Sheesh...}

Emblem peeled away more of the shell with his small, sharp claws. He looked up at the red and gold dragon, sticking his narrow head out of the hole he had made in the shell. {Who are you?} he asked. Emblem looked down at himself, investigating what he was. {And what am I?}

{My name is "Cartography," but everyone but Old Silverback calls me "Cart." OS, by the way, is the elderly black-and-silver dragon at the back. And that's what you are: a dragon. The brown-and-white female over there is Freckles, and my peer being savaged by the monstrous green-and-gold is Khala. Here, have some breakfast.}

Freckles shakes herself all over. {Oi! I never signed up for this,} she complains. She walks over to the deer and starts tearing out chunks of meat for the new hatchlings.

Old Silverback sighs. {I will tell you the story later, once things have settled down. It seems to me that we returned just in time; these younglings are more eager to leave their shells than I thought they would be.} He walks over to the deer carcasses and tears off some hunks of meat. He chews them to a tender pulp, but doesn't swallow, and then returns to the new hatchlings. He lowers his head and drops the meat in front of the orange and green male, then heads back to the carcass to get some more food for the yellow and green female.

The Purple and pink egg gave a shudder before splitting into half reveiling a very hungry female. Looking around at all the excitement she noticed others around her being fed but she was not! Not happy about this at all, she decided to let out a screach, trying to call attention to herself.

What lungs! Freckles winces, and then runs over to the purple and pink female with a large chunk of meat. Following Old Silverback's example, she does her best to chew it quickly, and drops it in front of the newest arrival.

Emblem tilted his head, looking up at Cart. {And that makes you my what?} the little one asked before delicately taking a nibble at the blood-soaked deer meat. His eyes widened. {This is good! What is it?}

Finally someone was giving her food. Wasting no time the little purple dragonette lunged at the meat.

Orange and green fur shiny and new, Emblem trotted over to the purple female tearing into her first meal. {Hi! I'm Emblem. Who're you?} he asked, sitting down next to her. He dragged over his small pile of meat and began eating it, though with not as much vigor as the other dragon.

Khala yelps and skitters back from the angry hatchling. {I'M SORRY! IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!} she wails. Once back alone with the deer, she hears the purple's shriek and sees Old Silverback's method of feeding the young. Finally comprehending, she picks up some meat, chews it up very carefully, and takes it to wait for another hungry hatchling. {Cart, the orange one's a male, in case you hadn't noticed. The purple's a girl.}
