I thought the entry listing just said that they gained the rights to publish the garments? Ahhh. I'm too lazy to look it up.
This is going to sound mean, but. I really hope not. None of those dresses appeal to me at all, and none of them strikes me as "WOW! LOLITA" so much as "WOW! COSPLAY" or "WOW! ANIME!"
I thought this was a strictly Shojo Beat contest, as in they picked the winner and not Baby. If Baby had, I'm pretty sure they'd have selected better designs, 'cause I know I saw some of the ones people made. In any case. Yeah...

maeanalda -Lolita_Kana- boconnotto They're not actually making the outfits, are they? o_o I thought they were just going to give a prize of several staple items to the winning entrant.
Agreed, while the outfit is decent I don't think it would be something that would look so wonderful in person. I mean if someone actually makes it and proves me wrong then so be it but the fact that it's stripped would pose so many problems. I for one think the stripped look would be bad for bigger Lolis such as myself since horizontal stripes give the illusion that a person it larger than they are. Also it makes me think of a prison uniform sweatdrop . I'm not even touching the honorable mentions, I will just simply say I dislike them very much. I'm a smaller loli and i look terrible in stries like that... its just unflattering all the way around. I don't know if they will make it or not, i'm kinda leaning toward the hoping not, but i was told that by entering they have the right to make the design, so... *shrugs* lets all hope? Well Ive seen those JSKs with the horizontal designs at the bottom, but thats different. I've also seen simpler designs with slightly horizontal designs, but i think its a pretty light design so it wont seem so overbearing.. I can't say much for the design itself since I havn't seen it. I've just heard rumors and such on DA but I wanted to know what people here thought...

Yeah. ^^; Horizontal stripes really brings out my bust, but since that's not one of my tight shirts, chances are that it'll make me look like I'm in a rucksack dress.

Other than picking at everything not loli about, I'm partial to the simple design. The collar that dips in the back adds an awesome touch, especially if you have short hair.
Amanikitty ~ Stripes can be pulled off, though, right? Like in stockings, except on a dress? I've seen that done before...socks, I mean. The thought of it on a dress is a little intimidating.

It can, but I don't know. It has to be really good and you have to have a really good shape so you don't end up looking like a balloon under a striped clothes. x:

I'm not gonna lie, m entry was kinda dull. I didn't have the time to color it because I drew it in one night and sent it off the next morning because I wanted it to make it on time. I'm such a procrastinator.... But, I didn't care for the winning design... I was upset that I didn't win, of course. All those months of waiting for them to announce the winner was killing me...
As for my drawing, I wrote a side-note stating that my dream dress was one of BABY's designs. It was the pink one Momoko wore in Kamikaze Girls. They've taken it off the site, and I was upset at that because I wanted to get that dress... Why couldn't they have had BABY pick the winner?

Whether or not BABY chose the winner, there would've been a very slim chance of you getting it. No one knows whether BABY would choose one of their designs, or choose an actual ORIGINAL design to be the winner. Either way anyone looks at it, the way they'd choose which design to pick would be "unfair" to the ones who lost. Oh well.

Well, that makes sense. Some people would not react with good sport if they lost. I personally think Shojo beat chooses based on the level of the skill of the readers. Im not saying anyone draws well or doesnt draw "properly" because in my opinion, there is no such thing, but I guess it encourages the reader that they have a chance in the next art contest. Well i saw that some wanted to see who the winner was, so i took a picture with my phone (i know im so lame for doing that). My friend said the runnerups looked sorta creepy, but i like the style they were drawn in, and besides he even admitted he lacks a sense of style XP RUNNER UPS WINNER

they're cute. y'know if you send then art for a contest that get rights to it. That's probably why no serious artists seem to win.

I submitted artwork to the contest but never heard anything so I figured I didn't win. Good to know someone did.
Do I like the dress? In reality I don't think it would completely work, but it looks good on paper. The strips may be a bit too big to look good on anyone but a model.

I don't really think anything good or anything bad of the winners/runner ups... Besides, I didn't even know the contest existed until just now.
lol, just reading it I kind of got a little "whoa!" moment there when I read the name Meredith... Thats my name, and it's not entirely the most common of names.
Anyways, I don't really like the way Shoujo Beat takes Lolita and advertises it around, and it gets pushed around like "that frilly style from Japan", and people are like "oh, i like that!" and buy the dresses, dress Lolita... etc; - but in reality, they don't take the time to learn anything about Lolita, and the real stuff and culture that we are so emersed in! Does anyone understand?

It seems that they key on just sweet lolita, shouting 'lace! lace! lace!'. I would love it if they did a full article on lolita, writing about the various styles, brands, etc.

They had a "DIY" project and it was hideous. So far, Tokyopop is surpassing Viz in terms of its lolita coverage. They actually have lolitas in their editing staff for the G&LB project and, y'know, talk to the lolitas. Not the anime/manga fans exclusively.

its okay... i personally like stripes, because when they're position right they make my waist look smaller and my bust look bigger, but not all the time... but i dont really know if i like this dress or not, i guess i would have to see it on an actual person i kind of like the musical note dress, i adore the stockings! as for shojo beat, this is the first time i've heard of this contest. i dont subscribe to manga magazines or anything, (except for the Gothic Lolita Bible, but thats completely different) but i dont really know if thier doing a good or bad job of "advertising" lolita, which is the impression that i'm kind of getting from all the discussion about it. well... i guess we'll have to see what comes of this. i'm hoping for the best ^^

-C'est la lune qui conduit la danse...-I'm gonna conclude that BABY used that horizontal striped design for their striped cherry print OP. And also, during a recent meetup of ours here in NYC, a lady from Viz saw us and took a pic of us and said she's gonna try to put us in Shojo Beat whenever, she was totally hating on Tokyopop about the whole Bible thing, because she had expected us to be reading up on Shojo Beat frequently and we're like "uh. no. Tokyopop has the English G&L Bible." Then she e-mailed us later for the "lolita cosplay pictures". :/ They obviously don't get it. -...quand le soleil sera couché dans ton âme froide.-
