They are equal because they are both Greeks.
Spartans was focusing more on warfare but Athenians had also a great Navy and Walls.
Spartan won in the Pelopponesian war because Athenians did the mistake to siege Sicilian Greeks.That destroyed them!
And something else,Spartans had mercenaries from other Greek tribes.Same for Athens.So we can't choose...For example my ancestors were the best Peltasts in the world's history,Thracians.But Cretans were the best archers.Thessalians-Myrmidons had great horses but the Macedonian Cavarly with the Sarissa Phalanx was almost unbeaten.The Spartans had great Hoplites but Athenians the best navy.Rhodes had the best Acrovolistes(Light infantry)...
So as a result we can't choose.All of them were great in what they were doing.Trying to compare Athens with Sparta is wrong...

dude u put a downer on every thing and its just between 2 geek citys athens and sparta spartans where worroirs so they would win athens where navy ppl when the battle would most likely take place on land the spartans would most likely win

I suppose I'd have to say Athens. The main reason is that Sparta didn't advance very well, compared to Athens.

I choose both. They have the best of both worlds. Athens has the education and the scholars. Sparta has the warriors and women's rights.

Athens in my opinion. They have the gods on their side, though Sparta also has gods. Honestly, even though Sparta is all war and stuff, doesn't mean that they will always win with their brute force. Athens, isn't all war, they take time to think things out.
~But I also think that maybe they could be even or not even comparible.~

For those of you that don't know- Hierapolis (Greek: Ἱεράπολις 'holy city') was the ancient city on top of the famous Pamukkale hot springs located in south-western Turkey near Denizli. There was a temple to... I think it was Apollo- I should know this- I've been there.

From an anthropological point of view, they are both equals since 300 Spartans and 2,000 Athenians stayed at Thermopylae. But, I gotta hand it to Sparta because they were intense. And I like my women to hold power (whether under the table or not) ^^
