I'm not a huge dress fan, and even if I was, I haven't seen too many that would fulfil length and neckline requirements of modesty either. Most dresses are short sleeved with plunging necklines.

Dresses also tend to make my butt look huge, to be perfectly honest. I need that extra shirt over the skirt to bring attention away from my tush. whee

Wow, I need to shower, read and go to sleep. Tomorrow's a long day...

I've basically never worn shorts in public except when track requires it. Wearing conservative things doesn't make me feel more confident, but I think I'd be even more uncomfortable flashing every guy around me or wearing really skimpy things.

There's a trend in my new neighborhood, where a LOT of the Orthodox and Muslim women are fitness buffs. I'd never even considered this before, but now that I've seen it, it's a great idea. Mostly I see it done when people are out jogging, but I'm pretty sure they do it at other times, too. What you do is layer:

1. Bike shorts, capri-length leggings, or full-length leggings (depending on the season). Some wear very loose knee-length or capri-length yoga pants instead of the tighter leggings -- very wide-leg type things.

2. A loose knit skirt that falls to the knee. Try something like this.

The leggings or yoga pants keep your legs covered, even if activity or breeze stirs the skirt. The skirt protects your modesty.

I'm going to say something radical, so get ready. Are you ready? Are you sure?

You can be modest in a short dress with no sleeves and a plunging neckline. I know, because I did it while on a Caribbean cruise last summer.

Note the VERY THIN, breathy, breezy black cotton T-shirt from The Gap, and the VERY THIN, breathy, breezy black yoga pants beneath. Also note the weird expression on my face. A bug had just flown up my nose.

*Giggles* Divash, you crack me up.

I was about to suggest the very same thing for exercise and the plunging neckline. I'm guilty of not always dressing modestly, but I do keep ideas in the back of my head for when I decide to. I'm a severe lover of jeans, and think blue jean skirts are horrendous. Also, my closet is also full of skirts that are knee length. These seem to be my main weaknesses.

Dr. Pepper just came out my nose for the bug comment, Divash. It's alright though, it kind of cleared out my sinuses....

I did think about that, and it is a possibility that I thought about. However, I'm not sure how thrilled I would be about layering a shirt under a dress like that most of the time. Thanks for sharing the pic and idea, you look very nice, besides the bug-face. <3

Knee length skirts are great, and qualify as modest as long as the knee is covered when you're standing and only half-uncovered when you sit down. (Why? Because if you're sitting down, facing someone, you don't want them to know what color your underskivvies are.) I just don't wear them personally because I'm not a fan of my legs, and I want them covered more than they strictly have to be.

Some of them hit below the knee when I stand, but most of them of slightly above the knee. They are dressy so I don't wear them often anyway, but I would like to find some inexpensive bohemian style skirts. I could use them for belly dancing as well as to dress something up or down. I've got a pattern, but I lack the motivation.

Oh, and I know most Orthodox women wear boots or something similar, but do you think in most Jewish communities it's okay to wear sandals?

Another question I have is about henna. I know tattoos are forbidden but since henna is only temporary, is it considered cool in most instances?

Boots:
Yes, most Orthodox women wear boots in the wintertime. Summertime, I see sneakers, pumps, and of course sandals. Judaism originated in a desert. Bare feet are fine, and are in fact the norm in a lot of Jewish communities.

Henna:
In many Ashkenazi Orthodox communities, it's frowned upon, and the rabbis will say not to do it. In many Sephardi, Teimani (Yemenite), and Jewish Indian communities, henna tattooing is practiced often, especially by brides in preparation for their weddings. Speak to your own rabbi for an answer that will pass inspection in your own community.

*Slaps forhead* Sandals, Jews, Desert. DUH! sweatdrop Silly me.

I think Sephardim really suites my hippie lifestyle better, but I know everything won't be easy. Oh well.

Heh. Yeah, it's great being Sephardi. It's great being Ashkenazi, too, though. Learn as much as you can before making final decisions. smile

Headwear hasn't really been covered here, but this is an excuse for me to show off.

Covering your head for modesty can go beyond the more traditional means and into the strange and cool. For example (here's where I show off), I really like how an Afghan style turban looks when tied with a simple hijab scarf.

xd That's awesome! I still have absolutely no idea how you would wrap one of those things, though.

Mr Silverpants back there is really distracting me from watching the turban being tied.
