The sounds of sizzling resounded throughout the small apartment as Hilaire poured an egg mixture into the hot pan. Lucifer demanded three meals a day, and had no problem complaining if it was not satisfactory. Today she decided to present him with one of her favourites; scrambled eggs and bacon with a little bit of maple syrup in the mix. Of course there would be a small side of ketchup too. She placed the finished food upon the plate and turned to face Lucifer. He was in the same spot he’d been for the past few days, in almost the exact same position. She frowned slightly, sighed and walked over to him. “Hey emo kid, it’s time to eat some breakfast.”

Nothing, not even an annoyed sigh. He hated it when Hilaire called him things he didn’t understand, and she had never used emo before. Hilaire raised a brow and grabbed set the plate down on the little stand beside them. She then grabbed his left horn and shook his head back and forth; making the other horn hit the window. Lucifer simply raised his hand and lightly brushed hers, as if he was trying to say go away. However, it was so weak Hilaire wouldn’t have noticed if she hadn’t seen him do it.

“Luci, you’re hair is on fire.” Still nothing. “Okay it’s not, but what’s your problem? You’ve said almost nothing to me for days and now you’re not even eating? And why the hell have you been scratching at night, it’s not like you’re a cat or something.”

Lucifer turned his head slowly and looked at her. There was an almost puzzled expression on his face. “I...I haven’t been scratching anything. Are you sure you heard something?”
“Of course I’m sure! It kept waking my up, so I feel asleep at work! What do you know horn-boy?” Hilaire was more scared than anything, even if it did seem like she was angry. Nothing overly weird had happened until now, and even Lucifer seemed to think it was strange. “I’m serious Lucifer, should I be spreading salt or hanging crosses or something?”
Lucifer sighed lightly, rubbed his forehead and muttered something under his breath. “It’s not something I can really explain. I’ve been hearing things too, and I’ve had this horrific feeling in my stomach. Like something isn’t how it should be.” He then began speaking to himself in a very low voice.

Hilaire sat in a chair close by and stared blankly at him. Even he didn’t know what was going on? It must have been really big then. Of course it was, especially if someone like her could feel it. But what did that mean? Could everyone hear it, or just the summoners? Had her deal gone bad and this was like a death knell? Hilaire shivered. Even if that was the case,
Lucifer would have known. A knock at the door broke the silence that had fallen upon them. Hilaire got up and slowly made her way to the door, as if in a hypnotized state. Her mind was far from the small apartment. On the other side were two men in uniforms. It hadn’t quite registered in her mind that they were police officers until they spoke. “Miss Montroe?”

“Yeah, that’s me. What’s wrong officer?” Her response was robotic, as if auto pilot had been turned on.

The men looked at each other and back to Hilaire. “We are sorry to inform you, but late last night your parents...your parents were in an accident.”
Her mind snapped back to reality, as if the elastic had been too far stretched and recoiled violently. She didn’t love her parents, but she did care about them as people she respected. “What? What kind of accident? Are they ok?”

Lucifer walked over and placed his hand on her shoulder; though it was clear his mind was as far gone as hers had been just a moment before.

The officer who had spoken cleared his throat. “A car crash mam. I’m sorry, but they didn’t make it. We were instructed to bring this to you. The man who gave this to us says he is for your loss, and regrets that he could not bring this to you in person.” The officer held out a large, thick manila envelope. Hilaire took the envelope in her shaky hands and muttered a quiet thank you. The officers nodded, gave their condolences once more and left.
Hilaire ended up sitting at the edge her bed, and she assumed Lucifer had taken her there. Her thin fingers opened the envelope and she pulled out the papers. On the top was a letter. She read it to herself and looked up at Lucifer.

“Hil, what is it?” Lucifer had honest concern in his voice, something as rare as a double moon. He’d never seen her quite like this; he couldn’t even quite categorize it.

“Well...looks like you got your wish horn boy. We’re moving.” Her eyes were back on the letter. “Says here that due to some really complicated stuff I don’t really understand, I get everything; the house...the money...everything.” Her hands fell to her lap where the deed to the house and some other papers lay.

“This can only mean one thing then.” Lucifer’s face turned extremely serious, and Hilaire became very worried very quickly. Could her parent’s death have something to do with what was going on?

“What Lucifer?”

“Shopping spree.”

Not a moment later Lucifer was rubbing his arm and grumbling, while Hilaire began washing the dishes from breakfast. “Eat your damned eggs so you can help me pack emo kid.”

Hilaire sat with her head against the window, the cold glass soothing her hot skin. The rain gave her something to concentrate on, a constant rhythm that never changed. Her breath fogged up the window, and she began to draw shapes with her nail. She couldn't stop thinking about that woman, She was so beautiful and warm. Her new mother....

What had she become? She felt different. Like there was a new power, a new presence inside her. It wasn't like a possession, but more that a hidden part of her had been revealed. She had so many questions, and the only people who could answer them were not here. Lucifuge was where ever, Mother was unreachable and Lucifer hadn't said a word since they'd returned.

Lucifer had given her the silent treatment before, but not like this. She was actually hurt by it this time. She had been thrown into something she knew nothing about, and he should have been there to help her. But he wasn't. He went to his room and didn't come out. Perhaps jealousy? Doubtful. It had to be something...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The room was almost completely dark aside from five candles that burned in a tall stand beside a large chair. Lucifer had his head propped up on his fist as he stared blankly at the nothingness. He was trying to decipher Lucifuge's plan. Not to stop it, but to understand it. Why was Hilaire chosen? She was innocent, all she wanted was love.

Innocence. He remembered a time when he had that. So long ago, the memories were faded like photographs. Memories he wished would fade away forever. Many had surfaced since he had met Hilaire. Memories and feelings. Things he thought he could no longer feel.

Happiness. True happiness. Not the kind you get from torturing someone, but the kind you felt when you saw someone smile. He felt that just from her being in the room.

Fear. He was terrified. Not for his position in Hell, he didn't care about those things anymore. He was scared for her. Yes, she did sell her soul to him, but that didn't mean it wasn't still hers for now. He was scared that she would be changed. Become like the rest. She wouldn't be that smiling girl anymore. She'd become something monstrous. She'd be incapable of what she wants most.

Those moments of solitude with Lucifuge awaiting Hilaire's fate were the single most horrific moments in his life. Imagining what could be happening to her. That he couldn't protect her.

Forbidden. This was all taboo. Frowned upon by those like him. But he couldn't help it. His cold dark heart had been lit by this woman. Her eyes warmed him. Everything about her made him want to be better. It was an irrefutable fact. He was in love with Hilaire. He had fallen for a mortal. A mortal who was now a sin. But he still loved her.

Suddenly, you awaken. You are alone. A look at your clock reveals it is midnight--outside the window, the full moon is dark; a streetlight flickers and dies. You feel eyes on your back, and you realize that someone is in your room. There is a soft mumbling, words unintelligible, monstrous--like an inhuman throat is trying to produce human words. Turning slowly, you see a dark shadow in a corner, rocking itself back and forth. Back and forth.

Any attempt to illuminate the monster is thwarted; the darkness of its corner is impenetrable. Your demon does not answer your calls. When you speak to the figure, it doesn't answer, unless there's a slight alteration in the unintelligible mumbling.

Finally, when you approach the shadow-monster, it vanishes.

There is no trace it was ever there.

Hilaire just stood staring at the empty corner as what little light had vanished returned to the room. Cold sweat covered her body and she was starting to breathe normally. Was this a trick of Lucifer’s? Was he trying to give her a damned heart attack? Or was she losing her mind? Either way, she was terrified. There were too many possibilities that could have caused the situation, and Hil was far too tired to fully debate them all. She needed to get out of the room, to go somewhere she felt safe. She knew what she would be doing tomorrow, but she would need to get some sleep tonight to be able to make that plan happen.

Hil opened the heavy wooden door that separated her room from the large hallway, and walked as fast as she could towards the other end. Even though she was only partially awake, she knew exactly where she needed to go. When she reached another door similar to her own she did not knock, but simply opened it and entered. She saw Lucifer sit up in his bed with a very confused look on his face. Before he even had the chance to ask her what was going on she was under his blankets.

Lucifer was very confused at this point. Hilaire never acted like this, nor had she ever crawled into his bed for any reason. Hell she almost never came into his room. She would always stand at the doorway and talk to him from there. She had now cuddled completely up to him, so he lay back down and pulled her close. “What’s going on, are you ok?”

“No. I’m not ok, duh…” She nuzzled into his chest. He smelled surprisingly good. “Something happened. Something was in my room. I’m sure I wasn’t dreaming and I’m positive that I am not insane. We need to go somewhere tomorrow. So can we please just go to sleep? I really don’t want to talk about it anymore…I’m still…shaken up by it ok? And don’t read too far into this, I just didn’t have anyone else to go to.”

“Ok, just go to sleep. I’ll make sure the boogieman doesn’t get you.” He felt her hit him in his side. He just smiled and kept holding her. Lucifer wasn’t quite sure what she was talking about, but whatever it was clearly scared the crap out of her. However, she seemed to drift off fairly easily for how she was acting. He stretched his wing over her so she was completely covered. No matter what it was he’d make sure she was safe. It was his duty right? No. It was what he felt he needed to do. He had fallen for this mortal after all, and he had decided a good time ago that he would do anything for her, no matter the cost. Hopefully tomorrow would bring the answers she was seeking, and hopefully they would be good in nature.
