A heavy sigh was heaved from Sukotto's chest as he realized that he probably wouldn't have enough chakra to find what he needed. However, he knew that giving up wasn't going to get him any closer to what he was after, so he pressed on. Scroll after scroll was scanned by his Sharingan for the image of the dragon that he saw in the library. He wasn't reading any of them, since he knew that being nosy about such things was referred to as treason by many shinobi and he didn't know of any gain that top secret scrolls would get him. He knew that it was best to leave that information to the ones who were supposed to know it and the ones who were supposed to guard it. Sukotto was marveled by how easy it was to get into the hut and have access to the documents, hoping that an enemy who did have something to gain from the scrolls wouldn't be able to get away with the same thing.

A knock sounded on the rickety bamboo board that served as a door to Ichi's office. In the rare case that the Uchiha needed to keep people out (nobody dared to snoop), he's set harmless capture traps or left behind a note warning mischievous children to respect other's property. Shinichi shut his eyes when he remembered that this was his office now, and pushed the door open. He blinked when the rising sun greeted his fatigued figure. Cheery rays bounced off the deep bags underneath Shinichi's eyes and he waved the pests away with one hand. "Sukotto-san?" the ANBU asked, more surprised to find the teen walking than shocked that he was leafing through secret files. "You should be resting," Shinichi commented nonchalantly. Since the young Uchiha had been the one to report the events in the Elder's chambers, Shinichi didn't see a reason to suspect the shinobi of foul play. It was more likely that Sukotto was searching for information to rescue his fallen clansman, which with his Sharigan would accomplish faster than with his own naked eyes. "What are you looking for?" he quietly intoned, taking a seat behind the cluttered desk. The ANBU knew as much about how Ichi organized his documents as he did on flower arrangement. Shinichi began to leaf through files on the new arrivals, searching for the information on the littlest Orochi. He was wondering whether to fear the stoic boy or comfort him.

As a firm knocking echoed within the small hut, Sukotto's heart sank. He figured that Tenmoki-Yuki would step through the doorway and bore him to death with a firm reprimand for sneaking into the Kage's office. However, the Uchiha was surprised to find one of the other most well known shinobi in the village would join his presence. As his deep red gaze rose to meet his superior's eyes, he continued to glance about the room, hoping to catch site of the dragon emblem before being asked to leave. To his dismay, Sukotto found nothing of the sort before his eyes met the emerald stare of Shinichi's. His first instinct was to cover his tracks and lay a trap in the form of a bluff, but the ANBU wouldn't easily be fooled. The genin felt his heart sink a little more as a terrible rage began to consume him once again. What he felt was nearly uncontrollable and completely unnecessary. After all, the man had merely asked him what he was up to without starting any sort of conflict. However, Sukotto simply couldn't stop his negative emotions from flaring like an unstoppable fire. Since he was still unaware of what was causing his feelings to behave in this way, the confusion that resulted made him want to simply weep it away.

In spite of the powerful thoughts mixing in his mind in the moments after Shinichi's appearance, Sukotto was quite adept at hiding them. He merely blinked at the shinobi's question, answering him without much more hesitation than that,
"I plan to train myself in a new taijutsu style and my research has led me to a group of people that seemed to be forming a clan." The tone of his voice was flat and unexcited. In reality, he was quite excited to find more out about these people, but the churning of negativity within his heart and mind was draining any anticipation that he had built up. "They seemed to use the image of a dragon as their insignia, so I'm using that information in an attempt to track them down in here. As for rest, I've had what my body needs for the time being." After giving Shinichi what he had asked for, Sukotto allowed his eyes to linger upon the man for a little while longer, wondering for the first time just what was going on in his mind after hearing about Ichi. He seemed all business, but one thing that the Uchiha's foster uncle passed on to him was the ability to see things that lied beneath the surface of people's exterior appearance.

The first thought that came to mind after Sukotto froze his facial features was how often he tried to get Aya to do the same and to no avail until yesterday evening. Shinichi set the folder he'd been skimming through down and laid his chin on a bronze hand to pay attention to the Uchiha. His unexpected intruding should have triggered more than a blank stare back, so Shinichi suspected there was something going on underneath Sukotto's empty mask; There was no better way to ward off strong emotions than to blink them away. And who knew better than Shimagakure's emotionless demon? Shinichi filed away this information and resumed his tired stare. Right now, he wished that Ichi were here to say something to make everything alright. Dealing with emotions and people wasn't something he was even adequate at. Shinichi's shoulders slumped a few millimetres when his thoughts turned to the brown-skinned man with eyes like- Stop. He blinked away the thought and refocused on Sukotto. Somehow, he'd have to replace the father-figure the teenager lost. Somehow.

"Go ahead and keep searching. I don't mind. Do you where those people came from? I know Ichi-sama has a file for each country. It's under that blue book." Shinichi pointed, keeping it superficial. He didn't want to set off the shinobi, wanted to give him more reason to trust him. His foresty eyes crinkled when Sukotto brushed off his concern for his body with a tough answer. "Alright, but I need you in top shape when we head off in a few days. Don't... uh, try not to over train." he said, going back to the files. Shinichi pulled out the piece of paper with OROCHI Shisei neatly scrawled across the top and started reading. Oh, so he was an Orochi outcast... or so the boy claimed. He decided to keep an eye on the kid, but not more. After all, Shisei had nothing to go home to, no one to plot Shimagakure's downfall with. Shinichi refiled the profile and glanced up at Sukotto once more. With a sigh, he said, "You know I'm going to have to bring up the Orochi mission with you."

The ANBU caught Sukotto off guard with the response to his explanation. His eyelids opened a little more widely at first, but soon returned to their casual appearance. Even though the genin felt as if this was an excuse to corner him and ask more about Ichi, he didn't mind so long as he benefited from the interaction in some way. It had never occurred to him to look through the booklet of existing clans to find what he was looking for and part of him believed that it was just a ploy to keep him in the office, but it was at least worth a shot. After breaking his eyes from the painfully weary-looking frame of Shinichi, he lifted the blue book from its resting place and found a chair to relax in. As he began to skim through the table of contents, he spoke with a much softer voice than before, as if he had completely swapped personalities. "Bring up anything you like, I'm not going anywhere for a while."

It was in the moments after hearing himself speak that the Uchiha realized just how untamed his emotions had become. Just about a minute before he sat down with the book, he was nearing his breaking point and then the feeling faded without him even doing anything about it. Before he could continue to ponder the extent of his self control any further, Sukotto found the same emblem that he had burned into his mind as being listed near the end of the book. The mere excitement of the discovery ran a chill down his spine, yet he showed no apparent sign of it. The genin nonchalantly flipped through a few pages, making his way to the back of the book while expecting Shinichi to interrupt him with questions or comments that would undoubtedly interrupt his reading.

As he continued to wait for Shinichi to produce his interrogation about the Orochi War, Sukotto decided that it would be pointless to waste any time and began to look over the information that he had stumbled across. To his surprise, the section about those who followed the dragon emblem was actually quite large and complex. Unfortunately, the reason for this was that it was written among many other tribes and organizations. It would take the Uchiha a lot of digging to find exactly what he needed, if it was even there, so he decided to continue to use his Sharingan to allow himself to comprehend the information more quickly. If he stuck to the traditional way of reading, it would likely take him many hours or even days to find anything of use. Unfortunately, his chakra was extremely low and he would soon have to began focusing it back into his system. However, since Shinichi had already found him and allowed him to stay, he wouldn't have to worry about being discovered and could take the time to rejuvenate himself. His eyes soon faded back to their original color as he took them off of the pages for a moment.

Sukotto closed his eyes that had become quite fatigued after using nearly all of his chakra to maintain the Sharingan and began to concentrate on his network. He inhaled deeply and exhaled in a subtle sigh, attempting to relax all of the muscles in his body. It was important not to be tense during chakra regeneration, because it was much harder to have it flow through tense muscles and gain the speed and intensity that would allow it to build than it was a loose and calm frame. It had been quite a while since he had allowed himself to sit and relax like this. The last time that he had slept had been passing out on Ichi's bed and he would have trained right after exiting the clinic if his body had allowed him to do so. He figured that perhaps it was best that he was finally taking a break from his busy morning. It would also give Shinichi a chance to ask questions without interrupting his reading.

Indeed, taking deep breaths through his nose and exhaling out his mouth will drooping his shoulders has become Sukotto's best way of relaxing himself. He had actually learned such a technique from the early taijutsu training with his foster uncle from the Orochi village. During taijutsu, it was always important to stay loose without tensing up to absorb blows. This way, the defender wasn't using resistance to counter force. The only good that that would bring would be a swift end. A key concept of good taijutsu was to make strikes glance off of one's body and to use motion to your advantage. Sukotto would use the momentum of the chakra running throughout his network to continue to cause it to increase, giving him a boost of energy. It would warm his body and allow it to rest at the same time, providing both physical and mental energy.

Even though Sukotto wasn't regaining chakra at the rate that he would have hoped for, it was, in a way, a trade off. The longer it took to replenish his reserves meant that his training would endure more, but it also meant that he would get more of a break. He was content for the time being, but the Uchiha knew that his moment of contentment wouldn't last for long. This was due in part to his work ethic and also in part to whatever it was that was eating at his insides. He figured that the rage would return before too long, since it had always originated when he stopped busying himself. However, he only thought of that for a moment, for he knew that concentrating on his chakra network had a chance of keeping the feelings from gripping his heart once again. After another deep breath followed by a slow exhale, he was back on track.

"Hm," Shinichi grunted and stroked his prickly beard with the edge of a thumb, "Just one. What do you remember of the jutsu that brought down Ichi?" His normally mechanical voice dropped to a low purr, so soft that it danced on the line between a whisper and a reassuring tone. He had never said plain and simple that the Kage was gone. Did this mean that he'd given up hope on searching for their beloved and so much more popular leader? The ANBU knotted his brow at the notion, plus at the fact that he had also called the man without a respectful suffix for the first time, out loud anyway. "... -sama," Shinichi awkwardly ended. It was getting increasingly difficult to view the loss of his lover impersonally. What he needed was to think that Shimagakure had lost a weapon, like a prized bow, rather than a person. The man glanced quickly at Sukotto, at the messy chestnut hair that would probably remain so until he learned the technique he tirelessly sought. Impossible, Ichi was... 'is' the player of many roles on the Shimagakurean stage, only that he put his entire self into each part. The hand that had been holding his ragged head up now slid to rest upon one side of his forehead, fingers trying to loosen the nearly permanent wrinkles that came from scowling too much. As he waited for Sukotto to answer, hopefully with something coherent, Shinichi began humming softly. At first, he was unsure of the tune and rhythm, but the man eventually settled into the mood. The action came without thought, but the ANBU allowed himself to continue the famous ditty from the Fire Country. A mix of mainly high notes coupled with the occasional, haunting low blended to create a song that spoke of sorrow, of guilt, and lastly, of an unfathomable loneliness. In short, the notes glazed the room with humanity. Shinichi silently filed a finished supply list away, then returned his serene gaze to Sukotto, ready to stop when the shinobi was ready.

The Uchiha just barely refrained from raising an eyebrow in response to Shinichi's question. He was caught off guard by how he asked about the technique rather than the Kage himself. However, Sukotto soon contemplated the possibilities of what the ANBU was after. Perhaps, just like himself, the man refused to confide in anyone about what had happened to Ichi and this question was the veil that would be draped over the true pain that was most certainly being experienced. The genin opened his eyes only after he heard the gentle hum of his superior filling the inside of the hut. It only took a few more moments for Sukotto to make sense of the look that Shinichi cast in his direction. The man wasn't looking at the young shinobi before him, but into the single entity that led Ichi. In the past, he had noticed how the two experienced ninja had looked at each other. Although it was only a subtle indication, Sukotto had learned to read people's inner emotions from the master himself and could easily tell that a limitless amount of feelings existed between the pair. After he was satisfied with his analyzation of the ANBU, the genin formed his hands into the seal of the Ram to focus his chakra while speaking, "It was a ninjutsu so terrible that it seems to resonate the effects of a genjutsu." Although he didn't want to believe it, the Uchiha felt as though witnessing the jutsu had somehow contributed to waking up whatever it was that was so negative within his heart. He had witnessed the death of a loved father figure once before and it didn't have nearly the same result on him. "It's difficult to describe, but he was frozen into solid stone in the time that it took for that Orochi to blink his eye. I only escaped because the technique took just about all of his remaining chakra to execute."

A ginger eyebrow raised in hope when Sukotto mentioned the possibility of the technique being a genjutsu. It opened up the possibility that the Orochi had cast an illusion on the genin and that Ichi was alive, kicking, and plowing his way back to Shimagakure. After all, Sukotto was the only witness that still held an ounce of respect for their island. But, Shinichi's bright eyes faded to a dull green as soon as the teen mentioned the fact that the jutsu took all of his opponent's chakra. He knew Sukotto possessed enough skills to sense how much chakra a person used and had remaining. A mid level genjutsu should have been enough to fool a genin, even with his Sharingan; There was no need to use so much chakra. The man didn't want to believe that there existed a jutsu that could be cast as fast as genjutsu and yet caused a physical effect. "I see..." Shinichi replied distantly as he got up, stretching long, spidery limbs. He looked over to the bright white robe that marked Ichi as Kage, deliberating as his hand froze right before touching the cloth. In the end, Shinichi decided to leave the robe where it was, as a sign of respect to his leader. Or it just could have easily been a way to avoid the pain that flared whenever he came into contact with any of the Kage's cherished belongings. It didn't matter. Shinobi felt nothing when it was time to act. As Shinichi pulled his layered black ANBU kimono tighter around his thin frame, he offered one last word to the other ninja, "I'm heading to the academy. You're welcome to stay here as long as you want. But... Sukotto, aren't you close to earning the chuunin rank? You could take time to watch the kids. Teach them. Give them someone to look up to." He delivered the last line with a bittersweet edge. With a disabled Kage, half the adult shinobi missing, and the other half reclusive as hermits in defeat, the village needed somebody who hadn't gone insane. Speaking of crazy, Shinichi thought he'd better check up on Aya and Kana. Those two were skillfully mature, but their emotions still had a long way to go. They were known to be reckless when confronted with hardship. Or maybe just reckless in general. Oh, and he'd look for Maya too. Give her the real reason to hate the world.

Little did Shinichi know, teaching the academy students was exactly what Sukotto had in mind. Too many times had he seen the younger kids waste their time with chores that the adults placed before them, only to lose out on the training that would save their life in battle. The ones that he taught to fight wouldn't get caught alone like Ichi had. They would be prepared to fight alongside one another so that a powerful opponent wouldn't be able to use such a fearsome technique because it would ultimately lose the battle. Indeed, Sukotto's students would be the hope for future generations of Shimagakure, or so he hoped.

The Uchiha was surprised at first at how quickly the ANBU left the conversation. In fact, Sukotto decided that it couldn't quite be called a conversation, considering its length. Perhaps the man just wanted some sort of reassurance about Ichi and had hoped to use a professional appearance to gain that. However, the genin saw right through his motives and wondered why it was so hard for people like Shinichi and even himself to just speak truthfully about what they felt. He hoped that he would someday be able to speak openly with the man about what went on in his mind, but that would take some growing up, and part of him knew that already. As the man left, Sukotto closed his eyes and said nothing, focusing on his chakra network once again.

The Uchiha felt a large burst of chakra throughout his system. By his reckoning, he had about half of his regular amount stored back up. He wouldn't stop until he had every last bit saved up, which would allow him a lot more energy to use when reading the information that Shinichi had helped lead him to. After taking a deep breath, Sukotto once again relaxed his muscles and allowed his hands to slip out of the Ram seal while attempting to distance the interaction between Shinichi and himself from his mind for the time being. He couldn't have anything meddling with his concentration while he meditated and restored his chakra. The process would be slowed and as far as he saw it, the faster that he got away from the Kage's office, the better. After all, Yuki wasn't as likely to allow him to stay as Shinichi had been.

Unfortunately, Sukotto couldn't help but think deeply about the students that he would be taking under his wing. Of course, the most important thing that would be stressed during their first training sessions would be teamwork. Since their skills would most likely be unrefined, he would have little trouble making it be their most proficient ability. The Uchiha had read some books about how Jounin trained genin when he lived back in the Orochi village. They started working on the group's teamwork and in most cases, the genin had no idea how to work with each other. If they started earlier, like Sukotto's students would be, then that would already be taken care of, allowing them to become much stronger when they hit the genin stage.
