As Otto got closer, Cassi leaned forward once more to meet him half way. “Good” she whispered, letting her lips ghost Otto’s ear and cheek before they both were back in their seats. Cassi watched with lust filled eyes as Otto got up and helped the other customers. Just as Cassi was back to sipping her god coffee, Cole stormed to the table and took his seat next to Cassi.
He eyed his pancakes once before turning to his mother, “Mother I want to go home, now.” Cole’s face was blank, but his eyes still contained anger.
“No Cole, we only just got here, now eat your pancakes!” Cassi wasn’t ready to leave just yet, she sensed her latest conquest was just like her and she didn’t like sharing until after she had gotten the final product.
“There’s no orange juice.” Cole’s voice was small, his eyes staring at the pancakes.
“Cole, just eat, I’ll take care of the orange juice.” Cassi sighed at the moodiness of her child. She watched as Cole tore apart the pancakes with his knife and fork rather than cut them up into neat squares like he normally did.
Oh s**t! He’s upset! Cassi racked her brain for something motherly and kind to say when her kid was obviously going through some stuff.
“So, Tanz, nice kid, yea?” Cole stopped massacring his pancakes to glare up at Cassi, is face shadowed by the pure fury that was radiating from his small body.
But before Cassi could say anything, yet another waiter was standing at their table. “For you honey? I’ll always need something, it just depends if you’re man enough to give it” She winked up at the newest waiter. “But in the meantime, it appears that McScruffy here doesn’t have his orange juice. Do you mind rectifying this situation we’ve got here?” She leaned on her arms and peered up at Neil flipping her long blonde hair back.

Neil raised his eyebrow at the young women and her child. While he was not surprised that Tanz had made yet another customer unhappy, Neil was very confused about being propositioned right after she got a date. Neil knew he shouldn’t have asked.
“I don’t think anyone is manly enough for you.” Neil said as he turned on his heel and went back to get the homicidal kid some orange juice.
“You owe me for this kid.” Otto commented seriously as they stood in wait for Neil to finish getting the OJ. Tanz blew a raspberry at him and smirked.
“I won’t tell Neil what you were really doing last Saturday when you called in sick.” Tanz looked Otto in the eye as he grinned.
Otto glared and sighed. “You got guts kid. He is vibrating.” Otto warned as he got down from the step ladder and handed a box to Tanz.
Nodding and taking the box Tanz smiled sadly. “It was the only way to get him to talk to me.” Trying not to drop the big box he set it gently on the ground and carefully took the tape off. Taking out the package Tanz smiled at Otto and gave him a big hug. Or at least latched onto his legs like an angry octopus.
Otto patted his head awkwardly as Tanz looked up at him one more time and ran out of the storage room. “That kid is an odd ball…” Otto whispered to himself as he whistled grabbing the ketchup he originally came in here to get.
Neil had just gotten Cole’s orange juice when Tanz went shooting past him. Scolding words where on the tip of his tongue when he noticed Shiri walking in through the back door. He smelled of smoke.
“You better clean up.” Was the only thing Neil said to his younger brother as he walked past. The people at table five wanted the Pancake Surprise and he needed to wake Quentin up before he drooled all over the counters again.
Tanz ran out of the storage room but slowed down as he reached the table. He noticed Cole was still angry. It was not or never. Taking Monkey out of his chair he placed him on the floor. Taking a deep breath he placed the box on what room was left on the table, making sure to not spill the orange juice again.
“These are Sugar Cubes.” Tanz said as he opened up the box. The brown and white cubes were wrapped up in a plastic bad. Opening up the bag Tanz explained. “Cubes are much better to build things with. My dad always lets me bring a box of these home to play with. And then we glue them together so it doesn’t fall apart.”
Tanz then quietly started to build his own tower, making sure not to use them all so Cole could have some too.

Cassi mouth dropped a bit. Never before had a man brushed her off as coldly as the waiter had. She pouted at the man’s back as he made his retreat. “The nerve of that man! It was clearly a joke!” She said to no one in particular. Cole barely acknowledged her as he continued to murder his pancakes. His face had gone back to cold and impassive, almost unfeeling. Cassi was becoming very uncomfortable with her moving statue of a child.
“Hey, Cole, so what’s up? You’re eating your pancakes like a normal kid, what’s wrong?” Cassi hated it when she was uncomfortable, so it was out of necessity for her to try and care.
When Neil came back, Cole silently took it without even as much as looking up at the waiter. Worried etched onto Cassi’s face, she had never seen her small child so upset, not since she accidentally threw out a piece of sheet music that she thought was trash. Apparently he had been practicing the song for the entire day.
As Tanz came to the table with the box, Cole made sure to lean as far away as possible. Would this kid ever stop bothering him? He watched as Tanz pulled out the sugar cubes with cold indifference. He couldn’t feel angry anymore, he just needed to stop. He watched on as Tanz started to build a tower out of the sugar cubes. Finally he looked away and took a sip from his orange juice and bit maliciously into a bit of pancake.
“Cole, why don’t you join him?” Cassi looked at Cole, trying to figure out what was going on in the kid’s head. She had never been one for puzzles, and Cole had to be one of the most complex ones she had ever come into contact with. They looked silently at each other for a moment, letting the hum of the diner filled up the space.
“Cole, why don’t you play with Tanz? Come on, just build another castle? Will it kill you?”
Cole silently shook his head and pushed his pancakes to the side. He might as well build another castle, it seemed to be the only way to get out of the diner. Cassi smiled and continued to nurse her coffee as Cole took a couple of the cubes and started to build the foundations to his castle.

Tanz tried not to smile too wide. That wouldn’t help his cause to get another friend. So Cole hated him right now, but at least his mommy could get him to play a little bit. Tanz continued to build his tower. He was so into his tower with alternating brown and white cubes that he didn’t notice his father coming up right behind him.
“Tanz.” The sound of his name made him jump, almost upsetting his castle when his hand bumped it. Looking up at the person who addressed him, Tanz looked pleadingly up at his father. Five more minutes, his gaze said.
Shiri smiled at his son and then at Cassi. “I am sorry if my son had upset your son. He tried to hard sometimes.” The awkwardly said words made Tanz flinch and put his head down. Tanz hated making people upset. Maybe he could make it better next time.
“m’ sorry if I made you mad. You wouldn’t have talked to me other wise.” He took his father’s hand and jumped off the chair and picked up Monkey. At the last moment he turned around and smiled at the mother and son.
“I am really glad that I could meet you. And I hope you will come here again and play.” Tanz turned around and dragged Shiri back to his booth where he sat down and pulled his father down with him.

Cole followed Tanz’s plan and continued to alternate between brown and white cubes. He enjoyed working in silence. Tanz wasn’t as bad when he wasn’t trying to be too friendly. Why can’t people see that I just like my silence? He though quietly to himself, watching Tanz for a moment. Soon the tower was higher than any Cole could have made by himself. Cassi watched their interaction between sips of her coffee and surreptitiously looking for the hot young waiter that she happened to have a date with.
Both her and Cole jumped at the sudden presence of Shiri. “Oh, honey, Cole get’s upset at every little thing, there’s no reason to get mad!” She pointedly ignored the look that Cole gave her and continued smile up at Shiri.
“So, lovey, It was really wonderful to meet you and your coffee, and service, was quite amazing. You’ll definitely see me around again!” She winked up at Shiri and then rummaged through her purse until she found a twenty. “Here, this should cover it, and I nice tip to Otto and yourself, and maybe that other guy, I don’t know, he was a little rude.” She rambled.
Unfortunately for Shiri, the second she found out a guy was gay, it was nothing but nicknames and idle chatter.
“Thanks for playing with me with the cubes. They were fun.” Cole stood up and watched his feet as they shuffled on the ground. “But you’re still stupid for knockin’ my castle down!” He amended quickly.
Cassi downed the remaining drops of coffee as she watched Shiri drag Tanz away. Without even thinking, she pulled out her scented paper and pen and jotted down her name, address and number down with the words, For future play dates! before leaving with Cole trailing behind her.
