the Alex is not the RX-78-2 Gundam Cass. The Alex was developed initially for newtypes (Amuro Ray was the only newtype the feds had so it was basically for his use). It used mostly new technological features such as the panoramic cockpit and the magnetic coating, previously used on the First Gundam also.
