And it's been UNIT forever, so I don't get why they're upset about the association now... Doctor Who is iconic; they should be happy that they're related in the Who-verse. 3nodding

According to wikipedia:
Following the broadcast of the 2005 series, in his regular column in Doctor Who Magazine #360 (August 2005), new series executive producer Russell T. Davies explained that the real life United Nations were no longer happy to be associated with the fictional organisation, and the UN's full name could not now be used. However, the "UNIT" and "UN" abbreviations can be used, as long as it is not explained what the letters stand for. It is unclear how this affects UNIT appearances in the various spin-off media.

Yeah, it would be nice if they just didn't bother stating explicitly what U.N.I.T. stands for, rather than saying on-air "Unified Intelligence Taskforce". I hope that's the case. In any event, they weren't wearing the U.N. blue berets in their New Series appearances, so that's also distancing it from the U.N. (though, now that I think of it, the only time I ever remember them wearing blue caps was the McCoy story 'Battlefield').
You've got a point: it wouldn't be that big of a deal if they didn't explicitly state it. Just say 'UNIT' and the older fans will get it; gives the newer fans a chance to look it up in Classic Who.

I was browsing UNIT's website to see what they were doing about it...

It says "Intelligence - Taskforce" at the top of the home page.

And on the UNIT History page:
"The UN Intelligence Taskforce (UNIT) has been at the forefront of intelligence-gathering and special operations outside operational norms since 1968. "

Yeah, they removed the 'United Nations' part, but who in the world would look at 'UN' and not think, "United Nations"?

I doubt they mind specificly about Doctor Who...it's probably more that across the board they've a fairly reasonable interest in making it clear what they do and what they don't do.

A bunch of soldiers roll into town in tanks and its pretty important that people understand those are UN peacekeepers, and if that isn't understood then there's a fair chance that people might die as a result of the misunderstanding.

UNIT in Doctor Who act absolutely nothing like any UN body ever has done...and that's not a problem within the fiction since politically the Doctor Who universe is nothing much like ours... but when an organisation's ability to win 'hearts and minds' and to simply Not Get Shot At depends on their role and function being clearly understood then it makes sense for them to request that a popular show stops promoting a misunderstanding about that function and role. Even if the misunderstanding is a broadly positive one.

It's annoying for us fans, and it is very unlikely that anyone back in the Kosovan conflict ever thought, "s**t! It's the UN! They're gonna go Wenley Moor on our a**!", but its a reasonable thing for the UN to have requested and it's the right thing for the BBC to have done in going along with it.

And as The Sound of Drums shows, there are lots of clever work-arounds so that the cohesion of our favourite fictional universe needn't suffer. But even if it did...lets all remember that the real universe remains a bit more important.

Okay, I undertstand that problem now. That is a big deal, only I wasn't exactly aware of it.
I'm certainly not upset in the least about it now, so thank you.

No problem!
The whole thing niggles my fanboy soul, but it makes sense in context. smile

Yeah, if there wasn't an actual problem with that, I'd be so ticked off I dunno what I'd do.

I'm still a bit annoyed, but more in the disappointed sense.
