I think they are books, but they just express what it happening through pictures, not words. Calling them "comic books" is not fitting their description at all, because comic books are what i would think are in magazines (unless they are graphic novels), and tend not to have a long storyline like a book does. Manga are not what you would call normal comics. They have a proper plot, chapters and interesting story. And they are much deeper than your average comic.

I consider them books because they have good storylines that go from book to book and have various plot twists.

I think it depends on the book. I mean, Azumanga Daioh? Definately not a book. But Darkside Blues? I'd call that a light novel. When you've got those little four panel comics, and there's about 200 of them in a book, and half of them are visual jokes...it's hard to call that anything more than a graphic novel. But I've seen some manga that are really text heavy and could probably qualify as short books.
I'm noticing a lot of people saying that comic books are what you would see in magazines... Most manga originally was run in magazines. Pick up any Japanese magazine, and it will have a comic in there, and the comics continue throughout the issues. More than half of manga do not go straight to book. That's why there are recaps at the begining of each chapter, because it's been a few weeks since most people have read the last one.
Not to mention, has anyone here read a Marvel comic? Those things can have mega long plot lines with various twists and turns and character after character, but no one would call them books. Heck, most comic books last years and years going on the same plot.

Zyrin Adrian Snows_Silence *sigh* I agree they would be considered 'comic books', but when you saw the way mom had them she had them with her books just in their own respective spot. I consider them books and comic books. Seems like to her they're just normal books. To me, they're normal books. Sure, they're based around pictures, but to me, comic books are those magazine style things you get that have like 30 or so pages. Manga have over 200 or so, and actually do have chapters. But suppose it does jsut depends on who you ask. I agree with this. Even if they do have pictures there is still a number of them that I would consider to be books. Of course there are always exceptions to this rule, I'm sure there are mangas out there that are just full of pictures and have barely any dialogue. These might be comsidered more a comic. However, there are comics that have lots of dialogue and many chapters. I think manga are books, just with another countries writing style. The question is really what makes a short story a book? Or a comic a comic? Do only pictures make the difference? It's all up to the person really and their perspective. (will stop babbling on now) sweatdrop

"comic books..." just another type of "book" otherwise the word wouldn't be in there 3nodding So yes, I do believe manga can be considered books.
On another note, it may be true that we like to think of a book as "something with a good plot" but not all printed books are written the same. Some quite literally DON'T have any point whatsoever.
Manga has a point and purpose just like any other page bound volume - it entertains and can deliver a powerful message.
So yes, I believe manga can be considered as a different genre of books.

It really depends on the series of manga you are referring too.. Some with no plot or very light like short stories I would call a comic.. Ones with a main plot, and character development I would consider a book. Because just like a book the people and story take a lot of thought and development.. I know I am a novelist in the making..

I'd call them.. mangas sweatdrop
If I was counting how many books I read, I would say "I read x books and y mangas".
Since the average manga takes about a half hour to read, I'd say about reading 5 or so counts as 'a book'.
I love reading manga, and I also read heavy novels.... So I dont like it when people look down on manga. I know some people give manga a bad name... but some is really good.
