Sometimes I play lead on my bass,

Other times I have dynamic scaled bass lines that stand out,

Or I have bass solo's.

I'm the bassist to Pyroboy's band, so we've been developing ways for the both of us to "take center stage".

Man can that kid solo.

Practice always playing with your fingers,

Fingering is what builds speed.

Agreed. Sometimes using a pick to play fast is a way to build up strength to pluck, fingerpick, or slap just as fast. I remember I used to use a pick to build up strength so that I could slap.

Though once you're past that stage, you should really try to stay away from them.

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned Effects yet.

My main influence's are definately Les Claypool, Geddy Lee, John Myung, and Victor Wooten.

But the only bassist who plays with a pick who I really enjoy listening to is Justin Chancellor.
When it comes to effecting the sound of my bass, that dude influence's me alot.

I play with my fingers but I also use different effects to add a new dimension to my basslines and the music in general. Whether its chorus, flange, envelope filter, or distortion (among many others). I always strive to get the most out of my music.

But sometimes when i don't feel like flipping through effects I'll play clean Leads on my bass, even sometime's solo if it fits.

Its ok to play with a pick,
Alot of bassists will nock it because it will limit your abilites,
Try practiceing scales with your fingers, its what helped me alot.

I would play three or four different scales forwards and backwards untill I got really good at them.

I'm trying to use a pick to "Shread" on my bass, I swear it can be done.

Or if I want to make the metalic tone sounds caused by picking I'll play with my fingernails.

If you're talking musically, I like to take counter melodies; something that sounds completely different than the treble melody, but somehow syncs up with it to sound really trippy. I've also played a few songs in drop A tuning, that kinda makes me stand out against standart tuned guitars.

If you're talking on stage, I do the crab walk. Yeah, yeah, I know it's queer looking, but its fun as hell. biggrin

the way i grabe peoples attention when playing is that i take funk and jazz licks and give them a dark rock essence. because of the funk element it gets people to dance and because of the darkness/rock essence it gets rock flowin through you, just listen to this song http://www.thevideocodes.com/Video.aspx?id=2482
(note: this song is not by my band)

I like the pic, though I dont really use it often, it slows my switch between strings too much. But since I'm out of practice in bass in general, its nice to use to be able to keep playing after my fingers get exausted and the joints start cracking almost locking up, I think something might be wrong with my finger joints gonk

me in my band its now how I play, its the way I sing, I am the screamo half of my band so I end up standing out by playing and screaming.

Another thing, is stage presence. Its must if you want to stand out. Though if you are only playing to stand out you probably should not be playing bass. But yea, in my opinion stage presence can over ride good playing, cause even if your not the best you can still look good playing. But I suppose that alos depends on if you view yourself more as a musician vs. and entertainer. I am not even in a band lol I play because I love to play. sorry about being of topic.
