"Patience is definitely key," Mothstar mewed as she placed her kill under some reeds where it wouldn't be harassed by other predators before she picked it up later. "I saw you shift as the fish appeared, you can't do that if you hope to bring back some fresh kill for supper. The fish will notice your shadow move and it will dart back down faster than you can call yourself a mousebrain for making such a fundamental mistake. If you also notice, right now most of my shadow is being cast back on the shore. It's good to choose a fishing spot where that happens, it's one less thing to worry about."

"Since I've disturbed the water here enough for the time being, why don't we go upstream even more? You can point out a spot where it would be good to stand while fishing. Remember your shadow."

Reedpaw nodded, noting her mistake, but never giving it a second thought. She immediatly bounded up river, and then slowed to pad carfully, looking for a spot where the water was close to the shore, and it was hard ground. Soon, she found a small rocky spot. She positioned herself, noting her shadow, and immitaed her mentor's actions earlier of holding a paw above the water.

"Very good positioning. Make sure not to wave your tail about," she suggested, remembering it had been a problem for her when she first started fishing. "Though you can move that way when pouncing on land, fishing requires perfect stillness."

Mothstar leaped onto a higher rock where she could observe her apprentice while not getting in her way. She had barely settled herself when another flash of silver surfaced. A fish! How would Reedpaw fare when she wasn't in the water?

Reedpaw settled her tailo down, and almost immediatly she noticed a fish. She bit her lip, suppressing the urge to dive in and kill it. She sat there, waiting and watching. Then, she couldnt keep her self back anymore, the fact the fish was so close was unbearable and Reedpaw was lacking of patience. She struck her paw into the water, missing by half a tail length. The fish quickly sped off, leaveing Reedpaw looking so downcast, her face could have made it rain right now. What a failure....she had watched and knew she should have waited longer, but she couldnt have kept her self still long enough!

"Different from being in the water, isn't it?" Mothstar commented. "When you are in the river fishing depends on swift movements that echo that of your prey, but on land it's a bit less graceful. You stuck way too early, on impulse. Don't let it get you down though, it takes practice."

"When the next fish comes along, I want you to let it go by. Stay in the hunting position, but let it go. It's an annoying drill, but it shows you how to control your movements when all of your instincts are telling you to attack early. Then you can go for the fish that comes along after that."

Reedpaw nodded ruefully. She perked up when he mentor said it took practice, and nodded again, turning back to the river eagerly, holding her right paw just above the ground, but she would not strike at al this time. Her tail flicked, but fell still soon after.

Mothstar smiled as her apprentice followed her instructions, the older cat knew Reedpaw was using all of her self control to keep from lashing at the fish as it slipped lazily by. She had a feeling that Reedpaw would catch the next fish without problem, though either way it wouldn't matter to her. The lesson was learned, it had been a successful day.

~End~

Sorry the whole RP was so short Taki, my fault, but it's silly to keep it up now that she's been a warrior for so long :3
