Mkaa's interest peaked when his mother started talking about how antisocial she had been when she arrived here, when she was picking out what job she wanted to do. Suddenly he felt very close to his mother, he was never the most social lion- taking even family is smaller doses where possible, though six siblings made it very difficult. How Ruffian described her choices made a lot of sense to him, and it sounded very appealing. And the idea of being able to test things out and flip-flop if necessary.. it wasn't as scary as it could have been.
"Do- do you think I'd be any good at being a scout?" he asked, "Like you."

Ruffian paused for a moment, letting her mind wrap around the possibilities. It would probably work out for the best, knowing what she did of him. Mkaa had turned out a lot like her, in being aloof. He was perhaps just much more kindhearted than she was.
"I'm sure you could if you really wanted to, Mkaa. The main thing you have to deal with is just keeping an eye on everything inside as well as out." She shook her head roughly, letting the little tuft of hair on her head shake to the other side of her head. "You might have to guide little cubs home, but I'm sure you could get the hang of that." Gods only knew just how many children she had to coax into returning home. Hmph, they always thought about going on some crazy, grand adventure and never remembered to think about feeding themselves! Priorities of the younger generations were obviously different than when she was just a child.

"Hmm," he thought about it. His mother did not sound very optimistic or very convincing, but she sounded very reasonable. For all that you could plan for the future, you'd never know for sure what was best until you tried it. He might find something and realize that wasn't what he wanted to do at all. He might not be the most social lion, but if he were to try hunting perhaps he might find he could become more social. The chaotic scenarios that often came up in hunting did not sound too appealing, though, so he'd try this before he did that. Cubs were chaotic, certainly, but not in the same way.
"Maybe," he said thoughtfully, "I don't have to decide right now, right? If I wanted to, though, would you help me?"
