Richard_Swift The post-vocalic 'r' would only be sounded in rhotic accents like Bristolian, Cornish or..um..Pirate. That's an association the West Country tourist board really should start trading on. pirate

knightofthe21stcentury (minus the repetitivity, if that is a real word.). It isn't, but how fun it would be if it were.
I would love to hear an episode of Just A Minute in which Nicholas Parsons tells Clement Freud that he has to talk without "repetitivity, deviativity or hesitativity."

Richard_Swift As an outsider living in the West Country it actually makes things difficult come 'Talk like a Pirate Day' - I try to do my best piratey accent, but everyone just thinks I'm taking the piss out of their natual speech patterns. Last Talk-Like-A-Pirate-Day, I adopted the cockney slurring of Jack Sparrow, which comes more naturally than the "A-harrr, Jim Lad!" gurning made famous by Robert Newton as Long John Silver.
I mean, Sir Henry Morgan, one of the most famous pirates in the world (mentioned in two Pirates of the Caribbean movies and face of my favourite brand of rum) was either from Glamorgan or Abergavenny, depending on who you ask. If you don't have a Welsh accent, I bet you could affect one. pirate
All we have to do is wait for the day to roll around again and then take to the streets with banners saying Support Multicultural Piracy! domokun heart
