"She needs my father." Chunuka replied softly, not seeming to mind the question in the slightest. He wanted to ask questions too, so it was only fair.
"My father left, thinking her dead. I never saw him so sad. He looked broken. I thought he would die just from his grief. He left, tried to escape from his sadness I think. But after he left, mother returned. She'd been on a journey to find my older brother, had strayed too far, gone too long. My father doesn't know and...and I'm too afraid to leave the lands. The Pride is all I've known. I've never seen reason to go near the borders." He cast a nervous glance towards them.
"I know...it's pathetic."
He looked at her when she answered his own question. "Forgive yourself? Meme, would she want you to feel bad? She's happy to have you back with her. She wouldn't want you to feel bad. Things in the past don't matter if we're prepared to change things, make them better. You've fixed things. Don't look back to when things were bad." He smiled softly. "I know it's hard. The past is a part of us I guess....it just seems a shame to live the future in the shadow of what has been and gone, don't you think?"

Ah. Obvious answer about what his mother needed. She listened to his sad story without another word until he finished, and they found something that Meme could not exactly relate to so easily. She'd run away as an adolescent to live in the rogue lands, never afraid to do that once she'd met Abedari. But then her fear was what caused her to abandon her mate and daughter, and then to abandon her sister and family still in the Pridelands. She didn't have an answer for Chunuka before he made some valid points concerning her own situation.
"You're right, but it's not so easy to let it go, just as you've said about your fears," she murmured, "Fear is not unusual, but you might regret letting it govern what you do. Fear is what got me in this mess, what drove me away from my responsibilities as a mother and kept me away from my home. If there's one thing I know, you can always come back." Kami had accepted her once again, knowing only that she had dared to abandon her family within the pride.
"Not to say you have to go," Meme said very suddenly, not wanting to add to his problems, "I- I understand what you mean. You should either accept or conquer your fear, torturing yourself would not be what anyone wants- you just said so yourself."

"I..." He paused, looked at her. "Well...I guess you're right. I need to accept my decision, no matter what it is." He swished his tail thoughtfully and then smiled at her. "Thankyou Meme." He purred, his whiskers flinching as he opened his mouth to continue.
"I love my mother and I love my father. I want to see them both happy and the only way that can happen is if father returns. He won't return unless someone goes to find him and that someone has to be me." He stood, puffed out his chest a little.
"Meme...I'm going to go and if I die out there, well...maybe I'll be remembered as the son who tried to fix things." He shook his head. "I wake up withthis sadness in my heart everyday, the only way that will go is if I face my fear, is if I bring my family back together again."

Meme watched him with concern, hoping what she said would not convince him to go against his will. She was relieved to hear him agree with her, and to hear a thank you. That didn't sound at all like he was reluctant, not really. She couldn't help but smile at him when he stood up and puffed up importantly, and it lasted until he said 'if I die'. This was an alarming thing to add on to any little speech.
"Die?" she repeated dumbly, shaking her head and smiling once more, "You won't die, I'm sure you'll find your father and be back in no time. You'll show them, and you all can be happy again."

He nodded, felt tears pricking at the back of his eyes. He as an emotional, girly sort of male really. He was not ashamed of crying and he wasn't ashame of admitting weaknesses. He had many of them, or atleast, he deemed them weaknesses, though he adored them because they were traits inherited from his mother.
Without warning he reached out and buffetted his forehead against hers, a sign of gratitude.
"Then that's it. I'll stop moping and start doing something." His eyes darted nervously to the borders. "But...first I better go tell sis and mother. I don't want them to fret if I don't turn up when they're expecting me to."
He waved his tail.
"Thank you Meme. Can I, maybe, come and talk with you again sometime? You've helped sort some things out in my head and...I'd like to help you if at all possible. I'm in debt to you." He gave her a little bow.

Memetuka was not used to being terribly social, she didn't have a great deal of experience with this but she was far from picking out and focusing on his weaknesses. So far his concern for the well-being of his family stuck out much more than anything else. She was a bit startled by the sudden almost affectionate gesture of his gratitude. Smiling, her eyes wandered out to the borders with his- it was not somewhere she'd intended to go again, but clearly you could plan to stay home forever and find reasons to leave, if only for a short time.
"I'd be happy to see you again," she agreed brightly at his bow, "I'll want to hear about your little adventure outside the Pridelands." Meme tried to put a positive spin on it to continue to make it sound less scary.

Adventure. Hey, maybe this wouldn't be all bad. Besides, there were other prides out there too, right? Pride cats couldn't be bad and rogues often joined prides. Yeah, he'd been thinking about this the totally wrong way.
If he made it fun then he'd be able to shed away at least some of the fear.
He smiled, bobbed his head happily and then prepared himself for a farewell. He'd come find her again when he got back.
"I'll tell you all about it. I promise." He swept his tail from side to side. "I'll come and find you as soon as I get back."
He turned, started off then paused. "And try not to fret, okay? Everything works out in the end." He smiled and turned, padding back to Priderock where his mother would be.
He had more goodbyes to say that day.
