Alyna wondered why some Soquili had wings and others didn't. It didn't seem very fair to her.
"Oh, I see! Like how my mom and dad are different, and my brother's different from me. And like you're different from me." She thought for a bit, flicking her tail absentmindedly. "I wonder if the whole world looks just like the forest. I wish I could go find out someday." She smiled a bit, realizing that it would be a lot harder for her to go explore the world than for Karma to do so.
"Your dad has wings? Wow! My dad doesn't have wings. He is covered with rainbow spots, though. But that's not the same." Alyna wondered if Karma's brother felt jealous of his siblings at all. After all, he would never be able to soar in the sky like his siblings. She thought that she would be very jealous if she was him. But she didn't say anything because she thought it wouldn't be very nice.

"My dad has spots too. They look a lot like mine." He turned his head over his shoulder to examine his markings and then looked back at Alyna. "But I'm sure that you can see everything when you're bigger. We're walking now and can get around alright." He stretched one leg out slowly and put it back down to illustrate his point. There was nothing wrong with walking even if flying would be more interesting.
He gave his wings a few solitary flaps. They could barely even lift the leaves around his feet let alone himself right now. He still had a lot of growing before he could soar.

Alyna smiled, giggling a bit when Karma flapped his wings. "You'd be good to have around on a hot day!" she teased, smiling at him. Thinking more about his previous statement, she said, "My dad's spots are like mine, too, except his are all rainbow colored. Mine are brown, the same color as my mom. What does your mom look like?" she asked, curious.
Alyna thought about what he said about walking. She wanted to see everything, that was true, but she didn't want to walk everywhere. She would have to think more about exploring the world later, when she got bigger.

Karma didn't understand what Alyna was laughing about when he flapped his wings but didn't ask. He didn't understand what a lot of people found amusing and hadn't had much luck in figuring it out yet. Instead he focused on her question, bringing up the image of his mother in his mind and thinking of how best to describe her.
"She has flowers on her legs like me but she has these leaves behind them too and her body his more of a gold color. She has clouds on her back like my wings and her mane has both gold and red in it." He didn't think that he was leaving anything important out. "I think I look a lot like her except blue and I have wings."

"I bet your mom's really pretty. Most moms are, I think. I wish I looked more like my mom. She's really pretty too. She's the color of pumpkin pie! I do look a little like her...my spots are the same color she is. I look more like my dad, but that's not a bad thing. At least that's what she keeps telling me. My mom, that is. She says I shouldn't "obsess" over my looks so much." Alyna twitched her tail unhappily. "But what's wrong with caring how I look?"

"Why should you care how you look?" asked Karma back. "I guess it's important whether you have wings or not, but I don't think colors change anything else." He looked down at his own floral-patterned legs and gave a slight shrug. "I think I look interesting but I wouldn't really care if I looked like anything else." He didn't really understand why everyone wanted so much to look one way or another. Some colors were pretty but he would never not talk to someone because they weren't.

Alyna shrugged and thought for a minute. "I suppose I shouldn't care how I look. It's not like I can change it anyway." She smiled at him. "I don't think it even really matters if you have wings or not. I mean, other than being able to fly, there's not really a difference." Alyna didn't really think that Karma was very different from her. He'd be able to fly when he got older, but she wasn't really concerned about that. She didn't ever think about the future, as she was too busy trying to have fun in the present.
In the distance, a wolf howled. "Oh, no...it's Lyka. She's coming to take me back home...We've got to keep moving." Alyna said, walking a bit faster through the forest. "She's always worried that I'll get hurt out here. All I want to do is look at the trees and the birds, and go exploring. I won't get hurt doing that."

Karma had heard the sound of a wolf's howl before but had never known what caused it. So that was what a wolf sounded like, was it? That was something to remember. He quickened his pace to keep up with Alyna all the while scanning the forest to see if he could catch sight of this wolf.
"I go exploring all the time and I don't get hurt," he remarked. "I don't think there is much dangerous around here unless you stick your leg into a hole and get hurt."

Alyna grinned. "That's what I keep trying to tell her. But she won't listen. Lyka and mom keep muttering something about something called a 'Kaloony' or at least that's what it sounds like. Apparently this 'Kaloony' is pretty mean...they seem to think that it would hurt me if it got the chance. But I haven't seen it at all. I don't even think it exists." Alyna had never heard of a Kalona before, and her mother intended to keep it that way, at least for the present. Alyna kept up the pace, knowing at this point that she was only prolonging the inevitable.

((XD I laughed at "kaloony" ...))
As he continued walking, Karma remembered a brief fragment of conversation that sounded familiar to what Alyna was talking about. He could only remember vague snatches of information and he wished he knew a bit more on the subject. "I think there is something called a skinned walker too."
"I've never seen a kaloony or a skinned walker so they are probably pretty rare, if they exist." He had no idea what a kaloony was supposed to look like and he didn't like the images that a skinned walker brought up in his mind. Even if they didn't exist, they didn't sound very pleasant.

((I thought it was fairly clever of me. ^.^ Skinned walkers? XD This is hilarious!))
Alyna was startled at the prospect of something as fearsome as a "skinned walker." She looked at Karma with worry in her expression. "We'd better take care to run away from them if we see them...I don't like the idea of a skinned walker...they sound scary! I don't much like the idea of a Kaloony either. I wish we knew what they looked like so we could run away from them if we see them." Alyna looked around nervously. "I don't think there are any here." Suddenly, she heard a rustling noise off in the bushes a ways away. Scooting next to Karma, she said "W-what's that??" her voice, shaking audibly.

Karma's ears perked forward and alert when he heard the same rustling. He didn't tend towards skittishness but couldn't help feeling slightly apprehensive after the discussion of monstrosities. What could it be? "Be very quiet," he whispered to his companion. "It probably doesn't want to hurt us."
It was probably true. It probably wouldn't want to hurt them. He still couldn't help but wonder what would happen if the opposite were true, though...

Alyna shivered, and scooted next to Karma. "I hope it doesn't want to eat us!" she whispered, standing as still as she could. She didn't know what it was, or what it wanted with them. She quivered next to Karma, her fear causing her knees to shake and knock.
The rusting noise continued, undaunted by the foals wariness, growing closer by the second. Agonizing seconds crept by, the foals waiting quietly for whatever it was to find them.
Then, a soft brown nose peered out of the bushes. Sniffing the air, a wolf bounded out of the bushes, ran over in front of the foals, and started shaking in anger. "ALYNA!!!" the wolf yelled, scowling and glaring at the little filly. The wolf's fur was standing straight in the air with fury, making her look like a fluffy porcupine.
"I told you not to go off on your own!!! And what do you do? You deliberately disobey me! You could have been hurt! What if there had been a Kalona, or a Skinwalker around? I would've had to take you back to your parents in pieces! Grrr, you make me so mad sometimes!" The wolf growled, a low growl that indicated how agitated she was. "I'm going to have to think of a way to punish you on the way home." The wolf paused her lecturing long enough to notice Karma, and lifted an eyebrow at the little foal. "Who are you, foalie? I don't remember seeing you before, though my memory's not as good as it once was."

Kalonas and skinwalkers, not kaloonies and skinned walkers... so that was what they were called. And this was probably the wolf that Alyna had talked about. It certainly was a little strange looking... and angry. Karma stayed calm while the wolf growled at Alyna even if he didn't really appreciate the harshness.
"My name is Karma," he said when questioned. "We've been fine so I don't think you need to worry."

Lyka walked over as Alyna looked as cute as she could, her eyes wide and pleading. "Lyka, Karma's right, you shouldn't worry about me. I'll be fine, I promise. Besides, what would hurt a little filly like me?" Lyka sighed, her fur settling back into place as she relaxed upon finding Alyna unhurt. "You're gonna be the death of me, foalie."she said to Alyna, shaking her head in disbelief. Lyka scrutinized Karma, sniffing at him to get his scent. "So you're Karma, are you? You seem to be a good furball...even though I question your judgment, coming out here alone. Don'cha know that there's been Kalona spotted not too far from here? You both're lucky that I found you before one of them did."
