The young colt turned his head upright to see his mirror image in the woman fondling over his bright brother. There was no doubt that this mare was infact his mother. It was written all over his coat with every blue spot that touched him.

He was unsure of what to think of her. She seemed motherly, yes, but she had ran to the other's side before thought of him or the other boy was even registered. Perhaps that shouldn't have bothered him, but being rather new to this whole sorted business he couldn't help but feel apathetic to the whole situation.

He slowly eased himself. When the woman came to his side he returned the nuzzle and oddly felt that it felt somewhat right. Maybe she wasn't so bad afterall, he hoped. But he couldn't shake the odd feeling that he couldn't describe. "Mommy?" He blinked slightly, his red eyes staring up at her with no concious thought of what he was saying.

Hasani had never meant to hurt Nyx by naming the filly so quickly, but the name had matched her so perfectly he couldn't help it.

He watched silently as the rest of his foals appeared, three boys, three handsome and powerful boys. His head jerked up when one started to choke but he relaxed when the boy spat it up.

It wasn't long before the stallions mind began to wonder far away from the here and now. His face fell instantly and his red eyes clouded over. He was once more back on the ledge over the ocean the scene of his families death playing over and over in his head.

Sedna watched just as silently as her father as her brothers emerged but there was no joy, no love in her eyes at seeing them. She was cold as the ocean on a winters morning.

Her tail twitched silently behind her as her orbs narrowed to dangerous slits. Just as suddenly as before her mood had changed into a rage and she struck out a young fruit tree behind her.

The blue colt looked up at his mother as she nudged him gently, considering. She seemed nice; he couldn't fault her for going to his younger brother's side first. And then she had come to greet him and his other brother, so she couldn't be too bad. That settled, he returned the nuzzle happily.

He wasn't so sure about his silent father, the father he looked so much like, but he hadn't really had a chance yet. Just as the colt lifted one front leg to go over to him, his sister kicked out at the tree. The noise startled him, and he jumped, and stumbled, sprawling on the ground in a rather undignified manner.

There seemed no point in getting up; the colt sat on the ground and looked at his sister in surprise.

Still lying mostly inert on the grass, the fourth child paid as much attention as he could to the world around him. His left ear, the one pressed against the ground, was slowly clearing, the sweet fruit syrup oozing slowly out of it in a most unpleasant fashion. Someone had nudged him, but although she (had it been a she?) had smelled familiar he didn't know for sure what she was. He didn't know for sure what anything was, now it came down to it. There were concepts in his mind that lacked names, and even if he'd had names for them his throat felt dry from coughing. He didn't want to try to speak.

Blinking sap away from his eyes, he focused on the five other Nequus in the immediate vicinity. The little pale blue one looked angry. He disliked her instantly - she had lashed out at the tree behind her, when clearly it couldn't avoid her strike. And what did she have to be so cross about? The big, dark male looked sad. Was that because of the girl's cruelty? And then there were the other two boys, one like the male and one like the female. Them he couldn't judge too well. The spotted one had spoken, and the blue one had fallen over. One prodigy and one klutz? First impressions were probably dangerous things. The last was the big female who had nudged him. She looked happy. Why did she look happy when the male looked sad? Was she glad to see them, and was he not?

The colt lifted his head, allowing him to see the entire group, and squinted in sudden confusion. They all looked the same. - No, that wasn't what he'd meant. They looked like...like they were a group. Like they should be a group. There was the big blue male, and the big orange-blue-spotted female, who looked nothing alike. They were connected by the little ones: the boy who looked like her and had his eyes, the boy who looked like him and had her eyes, and the girl - that horrid girl - who looked like a mixture of both of them. He grinned at his realisation. They all belonged together.

...And then he glanced down at his orange-red forelegs, and his grin faded.

He was the odd one out.

Laying his head back down on the grass, he wondered if there had been some sort of mistake. Maybe somewhere there was a pair of big Nequus waiting for him, one orange-red and one with dark blue wings, wondering where he was. Maybe without him they didn't look like they belonged together.

Silently he tried to decide which possibility was worse: that those Nequus existed somewhere, pining for him, or that they did not, and he had nowhere at all to belong.

Nyx smiled down at the child who had inherited her colours. “Yes, darling that’s me, and over there,” she nodded at Hasani, “is your daddy...”

Perhaps she had been going to say something more, but her daughter’s outburst of anger stopped her in her tracks as the sense of dread returned. Dear Gods she hoped her little girl didn’t end up like her brother, she didn’t know if she could survive that. Shaking herself, Nyx smiled around at her brood once more and tried not to worry about Sedna Calypsie’s attitude too much.

“Well then,” she turned her attention to Hasani, “we’d better think of names for the rest of these little ones, hadn’t we?” She probably ought to have given this more thought... Oh well, doubtless if she didn’t think of something Hasani would come out with something, he seemed to be good at thinking of names.

he watched Nyx silently, she was a natural at this, he'd never been one for kids even more so after the death of his first family. His ear twitched as she asked what they should name the foals and he shrugged. He knew he'd made Nyx a little angry at naming Sedna by himself "I'm sure your ideas are far better than mine."

He was watching Sedna now, watching the turbulent waves of emotion in her eyes as she watched their family. He frowned deeper, Sedna was to much like his first daughter Calypsie, far far to much it almost scared him.

"I shall go gather more food then we can start on our way back to D'ob once the foals are strong." He took a step back still watching Sedna, he was ready to get out of the fruitlands. Things would get better when they were home.

The filly flapped her wings, bright blue eyes narrowing to slits in her skull. Then in a sudden change the opened wide, innocent and she cocked her head to the side her ears pricked forward. Sedna was so strange with her mood changing constantly like it did never seeming to stay the same from one minute to the other.

She fluttered her wings and turned her head towards her father as he spoke then stepped back. Her brow wrinkled as if confused and she turned to look at her brothers actually noting their appearance two looked much like her parents but one boy was a bright redish orange. His color was something like their mother's only deeper and richer in color.

How strange, he seemed like the odd one out, but he was still very much family.

Rhinel let out a wide yawn. He had wondered what all this milling about was for. Why everyone was blinking at one another, or paying heed to the girl like she was a villian or the orange boy like he was an orphan, had very much escaped his mind. He felt that family was family, regardless of appearances or personality. He supposed, if he understood exactly what the word family had meant, or even who these other horses were.

Of course, he noticed the strange connection in his blood. They were apart of him, and he apart of them. Every one of them. He disliked none of them, though he might not understand exactly what the term like meant either. He merely understood that the two larger beings were somehow connected in him and in every one of the smaller ones, and therefore he was apart of the little ones just the same. However, how he understood this, and perhaps the other one that looked like his dad may have understood it, he wasn't so sure that the female or the orange one did. They seemed.. different somehow than him and his brother. Not any different than he was, in no way did he regard them as being somehow separate from him or the two larger ones. It seemed to not so much be an innate difference, but a difference that they somehow choose for themselves.

Rhinel trotted over to blink his red eyes at the bright one. He gently tried to prod his brother upward, offering support though he wasn't sure if the little one would take it. Rather he had or not, Rhinel licked his cheek and then went running off to nudge his blue brother and then finally his eyes went peeled toward the girl. If anything, he could tell she was fire. She may have been painted like the waves of sea but her eyes shown a passion and rage that could not be quinched by any amount of water.

Rhinel's orbs pierced her for minutes, studying her, wondering what move she would make next. And then, as if being broken, he let out a high whinny and tackled her to the ground and licked her face despite any protests she may have made. At this he showed that he didn't care, he actually liked her rather anyone else did or not. Smirking, he instantly ran and hid behind his mother's legs, sticking out his tongue playfully.

The blue colt was still considering his sister, who seemed entirely unrepentant, when his brother ran over to nudge him. Although the orange colt ran away again straight after, he felt no urge to follow him. No, he thought his younger brother had the right idea. Staying put was good. For now he was content to stay still and watch his family.

He liked them already - he liked feeling part of a group, even if he didn't entirely understand why yet. He even thought he could like his sister, strange and changeable as she seemed - right now she was being nice, at least. The brother who'd nudged him seemed fun, his other brother quiet (but that was better than many things), and he just instsntly liked his mother.

Just as the foal turned to consider his father, the older Aeri stepped away, and his optimism failed for a moment. ...Leaving? But then the mentio of food caught his attention, and he forgot the rest. Food... that sounded good.

He didn't like thinking about being the odd one out. It made him sad. Besides, there was plenty to think about now: apparently "mommy" was the word for what the big female was, and "daddy" the big male. His misgivings about the latter only increased when leaving was mentioned. Surely he would want to stay with this group. Surely they should make him happy. They certainly seemed to be making "mommy" happy. He approved of her, and of the idea of names. It would make all this thinking so much easier if he had names for everything and everyone around him.

Having the little girl looking at him was disconcerting. He didn't care what she was thinking about; he didn't like the way she stared. The spotted boy, though, seemed all right. Perhaps he had a taste for fruit syrup - that at least would explain the licking. And it had cleared some of the blasted stuff away, so the reddish colt didn't protest. Moments later, when the spotted boy jumped on the girl and then pulled a face at her, he grinned in amusement. He glanced briefly at the blue boy, deciding to decide about him later when he'd done more things, and then looked back over at his mother. Hopefully some names would soon be forthcoming. For now, at least, this group was his too, and a good name might make him feel more like a part of it.

Nyx chuckled at the orange and blue colt’s antics, glad that her daughter seemed to have calmed again for now, before turning to Hasani with a smile. “Not at all, love, you’ve come up with one lovely name already... Though actually, I do think I have a couple of ideas...” Turning her head around, the thin mare smiled at her little red-eyed look-alike. “You, mimila,” chuckled, “remind me of my grandsire a little, he was very much the joker as well...” Turning back to Hasani, the blue-eyed mare gave another smile. “What do you think of Rhinel for him?”

If her mate agreed, that left only two left to name. Nyx ran her eyes over the two colts in question thoughtfully. One sweet little lad with his father’s coat and... Well, she didn’t know where he’d got his colours from. Oh the dark blue of his wings, and the brighter blue of his eyes she recognized for herself and Hasani but that orange... Perhaps he needed a name that marked him as one of the family, just to make sure nobody forgot it.

Sedna tossed her mane and snorted at her brother wrinkling her nose but the anger didn't come to her eyes.

Rolling the filly pushed herself to her hooves and charged at Rhinel barreling between all four of her mother's legs to pounce him. She chewed on his mane and nudged him around in circles so that they were spinning.

She laughed and let him go finally turning to eye her siblings, her father, and her mother. They were all different in their own ways , yet they were still all the same.

Hasani shook his head and stepped forward again, maybe this wasn't the right time to leave. A smile, a genuine one, stretched his muzzle as he watched Sedna and Rhinel play together behind his lovely mate. This was his family now, as much as he missed his first children they were gone, besides they would have wanted him to move one. "Rhinel is perfect for the boy," his bright red eyes scanned his family again and fell on the orange colt.

He looked at the orange colt and wondered over to him lowering his head to nuzzle the boy, before looking up at Nyx "I think we should name him Hanyx..." the name was a glorious mixture of both parent's names.

His eyes turned to his last son, the foal out of the three that looked the most like him from the deep coat all the way down to the waves gracing his legs, "and what about Malachi for him?" he moved over to his son and nuzzled him as well.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 20, 2008 8:22 am

...Malachi? That was him, then. The blue colt smiled, pleased to be named - it felt right, although he wasn't entirely sure why that was. Names, apparently, were a good thing. He glanced round. Rhinel... Hanyx... and mommy, and daddy. And... he didn't know his sister's name. Bother. She must have one, he assumed. He would have to find that out.

The newly-named Malachi turned his attention to his father, and returned the stallion's nuzzle. So he wasn't leaving. That was good, too. With a slight effort, the blue boy got back to his feet. He looked up at his father, then edged round behind him, peering between his legs to watch his sister warily. He really didn't want to fall over again. He would have to keep an eye on her, and make sure not to be surprised. Oh well. She seemed in a good mood now, at least... although rather excitable. Malachi frowned thoughtfully and ducked behind his father's legs again.

Rhinel fell over onto his back, being completely distracted by Sedna he didn't notice anything about the name. Even if he had he wasn't entirely sure what a name meant or why it was important.

It seemed that Sedna at this point might have been more powerful than he, her ability to push him about made him whinny and he tried to fight back as best he could. He couldn't help but laugh as he was having a good time.

[Yeah.. it's crap, sorry.. I couldn't really think of anything.]

The red colt - Hanyx - mulled his name over in his head. It sounded different to those of his siblings. Malachi, Rhinel, Sedna Calypsie - lyrical names, ones that rolled off the tongue like so much water. His seemed...harder. More solid. More difficult to say. But who was he to argue? If Hanyx was his name, than that was that. There was no question of why his father had chosen such a name for him.

Finally deciding to follow his siblings' example, Hanyx gradually raised himself to his hooves and tottered a few paces, determined not to fall over. He ignored the rest of his family (for he was fairly sure by now that they were his family, despite his peculiar looks) until he had found his balance somewhat, and then regarded his sister with a wary eye. He did not wish to be barged into as his brother Rhinel had been, and if she was going to attack him then he wanted fair warning to try and get away from her. He had a feeling that she would make his life difficult. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Malachi tucked behind his father's legs. Perhaps he had the right idea: it would be hard for a troublesome sister to charge directly through a solid father. Still, Hanyx wasn't sure he trusted the great dark brute either.

With the possible exception of his gentle mother, he wasn't sure he trusted any of them.

His gaze still trained on his unpredictable sister, the red colt made not the slightest sound to betray his thoughts. He met his narrow world, and the people in it, with absolute silence.

Nyx looked about at her family once more with a soft smile before focusing her attention fully on Hasani. “Yes,” she said with a nod, “I think those are wonderful names.” He definitely had the right idea about naming their little oddity; nobody would forget whose son he was with a name like that.

As she watched the antics of the eldest three and the first careful steps of the youngest, the tall mare felt a deep warmth spread itself through her entire being. This was exactly what she’d always wanted. A family, and a family with a stallion of her choosing no matter whether he was a somebody or a nobody to the rest of the world.

Giving her wings a slow stretch, they were stiff from being inactive for so long, the spotted mare moved slowly over to her mate to nuzzle at his strong neck. “I’m tired,” she sighed after a moment with a happy but weary smile, “would you mind if I slept for a while?”

It had been an exhausting time indeed, and the Aeri mare had found it hard to relax with her children still fruits; fruits couldn’t run or hide from danger or cry out for help like foals could. It would definitely be easier to rest now, and by Gods she needed it. Nyx repressed a yawn at the thought of sleep and offered her mate a sheepish smile; he’d had a mate and foals before so doubtless he well understood the toll feeding a tree took on a mare, but she still felt a bit silly being so worn from just sitting around for the last however long it had been.
