Holly nodded at Fiero. He had made a good comparison, war was like fighting but their battles were not isolated incidents. “It’s like fighting, except that a fight could be random and while sometimes our battles are random they all have to do with the goal of finding out who the creek belongs to. If something happens in one battle it will affect the rest of the battles. And it’s organized. People play different roles on each side. The traitor was just a soldier luckily. I am a general. There is a healer and one person who makes weapons; it helps to have more than one person making weapons sometimes. The scouts are important too. And guards for when we get hostages but usually the weapon makers and healers can do that. People don’t have assignments with just fighting.”

She had to think for a moment when he asked if you could have less than three people on each side. It was rare that her friends had such small troops when going into battle since they usually traveled in packs. “I guess you could have less than three people on each side but it would be so much of a battle as a competition. Though if the people on each side were really good soldiers and could think on their feet it might be really interesting to see, even if one side was out numbered. One on one wouldn’t work though because than it wouldn’t be a battle, it would be something else entirely. I’m not sure what, but it would be something else.” The more she thought about it the more she wanted to see it. An exhibition match would be fun if it was between the right people. They could even watch from up above in the tree house. It would be like an arena. Her grin shifted to one side and her eyes moved back and forth and she stared at the ground imagining a match only she could see. “Hmm, that would be very interesting.” She mumbled and then with a resigned sigh she stored the information away in her mind and focused on Fiero again.

Fiero's eyes widened as he began to grasp the entirety of the concept of war. It seemed like it might be fun, but he couldn't play it. There was no one to play with. Unless Holly invited him to play sometime. He had a thought:

"What if I gave you Korea's phone number and the next time you played war you called and I came over to be on your team? I could be a good soldier."

Korea had made him memorize her cell phone number so that he would be able to get home if he ever got lost. He had asked if he could have a cell phone of his own, and she'd said, no. Not until he was older, and not until he would agree to wear clothing most of the time so that he'd have a place to put it. He didn't like wearing clothing, really. He found it confining.

Holly thought for a moment about whether or not Fiero could join. It would always help to have more people and a new person would have skills the other side didn’t know about. Her own troops wouldn’t be a problem either since she was sure they would let him join as long as she vouched for him, she was the general after all. “That’s a great idea! Soldiers are always good to have, and if you decide later that you want to have a different part in our army I’m sure it can be arranged!” she exclaimed happily.

Then she remembered she had not brought paper with her. “I don’t have anything to write on though.” She looked around hoping that there might be a piece of paper and something to write with lying on the ground somewhere. “I can try memorizing it though.” She wasn’t very good at memorizing phone numbers the first time she heard them but sometimes the numbers were really easy and if she repeated them over and over again in her head she could remember them long enough to write them down. She looked down at her wreath for a moment. She hated to write on one of her precious leaves but it would work perfectly as paper and this way she wouldn’t lose the number. “Do you have something to write with?” she asked.

Fiero's brows shot toward his hairline. For whatever reason he had not expected that Holly would know how to write. He knew it had taken him a while to learn to read and he still had difficulty grasping a pencil and writing neatly with it. Korea and Ewan assured him that it would come with practice, but his handwriting was currently abysmal and he was reluctant to write in front of others. He could read very well though.

"I'm sorry. I don't have writing stuff either." He realized moments after he said this that it was fairly self-evident. He wasn't wearing anything or carrying anything, and so it was inconceivable that he might have a pen or a pencil concealed somewhere on his person.

"I guess you'll have to try memorizing it - Wait!"

He floated lower to the ground so that he could trail his fingers in the snow. It took a bit of concentration, since he floated naturally when he was in a conscious state, but he had learned to do it relatively early. With his left middle finger he wrote Korea's cell phone number in the snow, saying it aloud as he wrote it.

"There! Now you can come back and find it whenever you want."

It didn't occur to him that it would soon be snowed over, and eventually melt.

Holly had still been looking down at her wreath trying to find a leaf big enough to fit her huge sloppy handwriting and had finally decided to just have one number per leaf, though how she would keep the numbers in order she did not know. Then Fiero said he didn’t have anything to write with. She looked up and realized that it was obvious that he would have any where to put a writing utensil. “You’re left handed?” she asked as Fiero wrote the numbers in the snow.

Holly tried to memorize the phone number as quickly as she could. She repeated the numbers over and over in her head hoping it would help but at least with them here she could bring Noel back with her to write them down. It did not occur to her that the numbers would soon be gone. “Thank you, I’ll make sure I give you a call the next time we have a battle.” She continued to repeat the numbers in her head afraid she would lose them and unable to think about anything else while she was concentrating on them.

"Great!" Fiero said, meaning that it was great that she'd call him the next time there was a battle. "That would be really great."

"And I'm not left-handed. Not really. I just write with whatever hand I want to. Is that wierd?" No one he knew had mentioned his habit of hand switching. Mostly they just said that his handwriting was awful, and that he should really practice more.

"Do you know what time it is?" he asked abruptly. He didn't think he'd been gone very long, but he wanted to be sure he'd be able to get back into the dorm, and after certaint times of night people didn't come and go very much. He didn't want to be stuck outside overnight.

Sorry it's so short. I'm a bit blocked.

((No problem.))

“No, it’s not weird!” Holly said shaking her head. “You’re just ambi-..ambi-…ambi-something.” She said trying to remember a word Noel had once taught her. But when she couldn’t remember the word ambidextrous she decided it wasn’t important and moved on.

“I have no idea what time it is. Late I’m guessing.” She said. She wasn’t much into keeping track of time since Noel usually told her when to do things and whenever noel bought her a watch she broke it while playing. That’s why Noel had taught her numbers, so she could read the digital watches, but she couldn’t read normal watches. She looked around wondering if there was a clock around and if Fiero would be able to read it if they found one. In the distance she could see something round and glowing. It reminded her of a clock but it was too far away to see if there were any minute hands on it. “I think there’s a clock over there.” Holly said pointing to a building not far off.

Eyes alight with interest at this new thing which he had not previously noticed, Fiero moved toward the building with the glowing thing. Ordinarily he had extremely good eyesight, but the snow was playing havoc with his normal senses and it was difficult for him to see what, exactly, it was he was looking at.

"Do you think so? Want to go see?"

He had, of course, already begun to move toward the building, but he had stopped himself to wait for Holly, remembering his manners. As he waited he practiced moving his ribbons. He supposed he wasn't going to master the skill at once, but he wanted to keep practicing. He'd learned to read and do numbers by practicing, so it made sense that practicing enough with his ribbons would enable him to control them the way Holly did hers.
He swooshed them back and forth as a group over the snow, as though sweeping it. The motion was clumsy and felt awkward, but it was something.

((Sorry it took me so long.))

Holly swept forward, her wreath barely brushing against the ground as she went. She was curious to see if it was a clock. She could not imagine what it would be if it wasn’t since she did not know of another round glowing thing that would be high up on a tower like that. She squinted at it as she got closer and tried to see through the curtain of snow.

“I think … I think it’s a window or something. I don’t see numbers on it like there should be. But why would there be just that one window up there.” She said when she could see it closer. She looked at Fiero and asked “What do you think it is?” before looking back up and the glowing disc on the wall.

No worries.

Fiero rolled his shoulders to work out a slight kink which had developed unexpectedly. Probably as a result of his attempts to control his ribbons. As he did so he watched Holly move closer to investigate.

"I don't know. Want to find out? It could be something really exciting."

He hoped it would be something really exciting. Then he'd have a good story to tell Korea when he went back. He liked telling stories almost as much as he liked listening to them. Of course, this might be a story better left untold. Korea wouldn't be happy about him sneaking out, and he'd found that no reason was ever good enough to warrant worrying her if she decided she was worried. Maybe he'd wait until he was older.

He also hoped that Holly would say she wanted to investigate. If she didn't, he wouldn't. He wasn't quite brave enough to do it all by hismself. Not yet.

Holly nodded at Fiero and looked back up at the round disk in the wall. “Yes, let’s find out what it is!” she cheered excitedly. She was curious to find out what it was a window to or if it was a clock as she had originally thought and once she became curious about something she was rarely deterred from it. Fear crossed her mind only briefly before it was overcome by her excitement. Fear wasn’t something she had to worry about anyway while there was someone else there to go exploring with her. There was safety in numbers and a good general never showed fear or at least that was what the last general had told her. She was back in battle mode forgetting that she was in town and not back at the creek and this was becoming another one of her games. Already her mind was racing through all of the possibilities of what was up there and how to get to it. Her eyes followed the wall down to the ground as she tried to measure the distance and look for any way to climb up. “Any ideas?” she asked Fiero as she moved closer to the building.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 06, 2008 4:12 pm

Sorry for the delay. Life.

"How high can you float yourself?" Fiero asked.

He'd not tried floating himself very high. He knew he could float up the ladder to the slide at the playground if he held on to the rail to help steady himself, but he wasn't sure if he could just float up the side of a building. They might not have to go all the way up though. He thought he saw an open window on the third layer of windows. If they could get to that, they could go in and go up to the level with the glowing Something.

He explained his reasoning to Holly.

((That's alright, my life has been getting in the way too.))

Holly scrunched up her face in thought. “Well, one time I went to the top of the Christmas tree but that’s the highest I’ve gone and I fell and Noel had to catch me. I don’t think the Christmas tree would have reached past the first row of windows. Maybe if we use something for leverage?” she suggested. She looked around trying to spot something to use. To the side was a drainage pipe that ran down the building past the windows. Without her wreath she thought she might be light enough to climb it. It would be like climbing the pole on the big toys at the park.

“Do you think the storm drain would work to get us up there?” she asked.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 18, 2008 1:47 pm

Fiero nodded contemplatively, thinking on the matter. He was certain he could get up that high if he had something to hold onto.

"That seems like a good idea. Let's go."

He zipped over to the drainage pipe and waited at the base for Holly. He realized belatedly that her wreath might be in the way.

"What about your wreath? Should you maybe put it around your neck or something? Will it be in your way?"

Holly joined Fiero at the bottom of the drainage pipe and lifted her wreath into her hands. “I can leave it down here. It should be safe enough, I don’t think anyone will take it. She positioned the wreath next to the drain pipe and started covering it with snow so a person would not be able to see it unless they knew where to look.

“Do you want to go first?” she asked when she finished covering the wreath. She braided her hair so it wouldn’t get in her face and tossed the braid behind her. A smile lit her face as she looked up at the pipe. It would be fun to see how far she could climb, she just hoped she wouldn’t get up there and then find out she was scared of heights.
