Whisperwind sat gazing over the incredible expanse of open land, her form completely still as the wind ruffled her feathers. She was staring at the ground below her, scanning it for possible threats and ignoring the sounds and movements of prey that scurried beneath her. There were other things down there to be on the watch for. More dangerous things. Though she was passive, her mind was anything but still, and thoughts entered and left like the breeze that swept past her.

How the wind moves the seas,
resonating, leaves its mark.
Listen to the sounds it leaves,
drowning out the singing lark.

She paused in her thoughts a moment. Green. Blue. Yellow. She turned her head from the landscape and absently preened a feather before jolting back to her post. What was that? Doesn't work. Have to keep watching. She furtively picked the land apart for any signs of movement, remaining tense for a while longer before her mind began to wander once more.

Watch the sinking sun that flees,
hastening to last embark.
Now to shadows slowly ease,
Owls stirring in the dark.

She succumbed to another furtive glancing about nervously. A shiver ran down her and she scrambled back into the retreat of the foliage until her back was against the bark. A fluttering of small wings saved her from herself.

"See any?" The small voice chirped, alighting next to her.

Whisper looked up and relaxed, "Heard something, Carmen." She shuffled her feathers and let them fall flat with a last glance about her. Her little companion was soon followed by her sister, the two little sparrows having become her longtime friends in her lonely expanse of forest. Estia chirped a simple note in greeting as she landed next to her kin, "Song?" She asked innocently.

Whisper paused, running the words over to herself one last time. "I was watching the fields." She explained simply as if it needed justification before telling the two sparrows what she had composed to herself. Estia was the first to take up a tune, her sister following in pursuit quickly as Whisperwind added the words. The three-part melody rose around in the breeze and the flustered Sentinel nearly forgot her phobias, letting the music soothe her.

The sky was a clear and vibrant deep blue, stretching out as far as the eye could see, a faint breeze swaying the trees gently as it passed. The rustling swept through the forest for a time, leaves shimmering in the sun as it the waves hit them in turn, the echoes continuing into the depths of the forest before falling short and all was still. Perfect silence filled the forest, the oppressive air finally shattered by a small bird breaking cover and fleeing to higher ground.

Something was stirring on the Ground.

It was not alone, something else was frantically trying to escape, but it was too late. The forest erupted into commotion, there was fighting, a dying shriek and a desperate attempt-

"Whisper! Whisper!" A small voice peeped, startling Whisperwind from her thoughts. "You okay? Look scared! Something there?" The sweet little parus flitted from perch to perch as if afraid to remain in a single place for too long, distress clearly on her mind as her sister joined her and glanced worriedly at her sibling and Whisperwind.

"Something wrong?" She piped in chorus with the other parus, the small sparrow hopping closer to Whisperwind for safety from the unkown threat.

Whisperwind shook herself, her feathers starting to lie flat once more. She had let it consume her again, like I beast that was tormenting its prey instead of quickly ending the misery. Quickly glancing below her to ensure herself that it had been nothing more than a dream, she went about settling her companions. "Shh, shh. Nothing's there." For now. "I was just thinking about something."

"Something bad? You okay?" Carmen chirped again.

"No, no. Everything is fine Carmen and Estia. Everything is fine, I'll keep you safe little ones." I won't hurt anyone ever again, I promise.

Whisperwind gazed unflinchingly from her post, strangely serene as the wind that swept through the meadows gushed past her and into the forest. The wind made her feel more secure in herself, reminding her that her wings could carry her high into the sky whenever she willed them to, mellowing her. The sounds that resounded from the forest were muffled, allowing her the simple pleasure of censorship from her paranoid suspicion of seemingly all movement.

Despite the Open looming in front of her very eyes, she reveled in it's vast open spaces unlike most Sentinels. She could see everything of what was around, even if that meant everything could see her as well. The fear of the Ground and the Open were ingrained in her much like any Sentinel, but the level to which she carried that fear was unstable. She had unconsciously trapped herself in the highest branches of the trees, as far away from the ground as she could possibly achieve without the fear of piercing eyes stalking her every movement from above.

The golden grasses swayed back and forth with the wind's touch, mesmorizing her as she watched and waited.
