Abi walked into her cluttered studio, tools and knick-knacks covered her worktable. Dumping the load of blueprints and notes she leaned back to double check on the cabbage. She had placed it on her coffee table and its leaves were a lovely green. Smiling she reached up and pulled a water can from the worn shelf.
Wondering into her kitchen she turned on the tap and began to fill the can. As the water slowly rose she looked out the window at the freshly falling snow. It had been snowing pretty hard for most of the day. Needing some supplies had forced her out into the cold and had found the curious shop that had the cabbages. Wanting to bring some change to the house Abi had though it would be nice to have a child around.
Once the can was full she returned to the cabbage and gave it a healthy soaking of the fresh water. Its leaves seemed to perk up as the water sprinkled it and filled the soil. Even if it never did turn into a child Abi thought it would make a wonderful addition to her garden.
“But for now you get to stay in here where it’s warm with me.” She smiled as the last bits of water fell from the watering can.
Walking back into her workroom she placed the can back up on the shelf, and began to sort through the paper work she had brought home. She had been modifying her plane recently since it was in need of repair anyways. Pinning the most important papers on her bulletin board she filed the other prints away for when she needed them next. Frowning, Abi looked at the messy workstation.
“Guess I should clean up this old place if I’m going to be sharing my home soon.” She said as she rolled up her sleeves.
After a few hours Abi stood back to admire her handiwork, her worktable was no longer in disarray. Everything had been given its place and she had cleared a special spot for her cabbage. Retrieving it from her living room she brought it back in to the work area.
“There you are, you can keep me company while I work.” Abi said as she place the cabbage down. The spot she had chosen was by the window so it could get suns rays.
Humming softly, Abi began working on the planes draft plans. She had wanted to add some new colors to it as well as an additional seat. The old propeller also needed to be repaired but she thought she could also replace it altogether. Chewing on her pencil she puzzled over some of the modifications she wanted to make.
“What do you think? Repair the old propeller or get a new one?” She held the drawing up. “Yeah I know you can’t tell me but maybe soon you can.” Putting the paper back down she smiled at the cabbage, and chuckled, “Look me talking to a plant!” Sighing she reached over and touched one of its leaves. “I look forward to meeting you.”

Walking down to the market Abi enjoyed the lovely weather. She was so glad everything was falling into place, her home was clean, her garden was flourishing and the strange little cabbage was healthy too. Even with all this fortune she felt something was still missing.
As she walked into town she began perusing the many shops and the goods they offered. There were different foods of every variety displayed in the windows. Fruits and vegetables dappled with droplets of water, fresh meat hung in the butcher’s store window. Abi stopped in front of a window that had cakes and pastries glistening with sugar. They looked so tasty. Not being able to resist Abi slipped into the sweet smelling store.
Walking up and down the shelves her eyes were met with an array of different colored goodies. Selecting fresh croissants, a baguette, and some fresh butter rolls, Abi moved to the section that originally caught her eye. The pastries. Her stomach growled as she bent down to get a closer look and after a moment’s pause she settled on a strawberry dream pastry. Filled with cream and fresh strawberry slices it was delicately wrapped in a fluffy pastry and then glazed with sugar.
“I’ll take four of these please, “ Abi said pointing to the treats as the baker smiled at her in greeting.
“Excellent choice, miss. These are one of my more popular goodies here.” Placing the pastries into a paper bag he handed them to Abi. “Anything else I can get you today?”
“No thank you” she replied kindly and handed the baker some gold.
Walking out of the store back into the bright sunlight Abi continued down the market’s street. Pulling out one of the treats she bit into it and was greeted with the soft delicate flavor of the cream and strawberries. Licking her lips as she polished off the treat she decided she would have one more and pulled a second one out of the paper bag. As she bit into the pastry her eyes caught a glimpse of a pet store sign. A pet might be nice to have, she thought.
Moseying over she looked into the window. How curious she thought. The window was filled with brussel sprouts! Wondering what this was all about, she wondered into the shop. The door tinkled on the bell and the owner came bustling around from behind the corner.
“Good day!” She said cheerily. “What can I do you for today?”
“Well…”Abi looked around, “I was interested in getting a pet but it appears all you have are brussel sprouts.”
“Oh yes, we have plenty of brussel sprouts but these are special, they will turn into the pet you were meant to have!” The woman began to walk around looking at each sprout carefully. She squinted at sprout that was placed high on the shelf. “Here we are.” Grabbing a stool she climbed up and carefully picked up the small brussel. Climbing down she walked over to Abi. She seemed to talk to the brussel sprout as she indicated that Abi should offer her her hands. “You’ve been waiting a long time but this one should be perfect for you.”
“I’ve been waiting?” Abi looked puzzled as the brussel was placed gently in her hand.
“No, no, no, dear.” The shopkeeper nodded towards the sprout. “This one has been waiting.”
“But, but, I don’t even know if I want a pet.” Stammered Abi.
“Do not worry so much, it was meant to be.” Said the shopkeeper as she began to bustle Abi out f the shop.
Continuing to object Abi tried to argue with the little woman’s insistence but to no avail and with one last push Abi found herself out of the store standing on the street. In the shop window she saw its open sign turn and read closed.
“Oh, fiddlesticks.” Looking down at the sprout she sighed. “Well I guess your coming home with me.
At home Abi placed the sprout next to the cabbage and made sure everything was fine for the evening. With one last look at the two plants she sighed and turned off the light, heading towards her room for bed.
Abi woke with a start! A loud crash came from her living room, grabbing her robe she ran into the room. There on the floor was one of her vases. Looking around she tried to find the cause and her eyes fell on a small winged creature the size of a house cat. It chirped at Abi and fluttered over to her and began to purr as it rubbed up against her leg.
Abi sighed and bent down to pet the small creature. “I’m assuming you came from that sprout.” With a gentle pat on its back, Abi stood up and went off to check the little cabbage and grab a broom for the mess; the small gryphkit padding close behind her.
