Uh, yes I do want to convert to REAL Judaism, and yes I want to follow ALL the laws.

Sure all the laws apply today but you're not understanding the fact that homosexuality - did not exist- in antiquity in a monogamous, loving, committed relationship.

It doesn't matter if it existed or not. The point is it says it in the torah and the rabbis say it's not allowed. how else would you interperet that passuk?

It can refer to pagan traditions.

Aye, not all rabbis say it's not allowed. Many are perfectly fine with it.

In any case, you believing it is wrong based on the Torah is your opinion and I respect that.

even if it was a pagan tradition, it was still not allowed. the rabbis that you are talking about are reform and conservative. the women wear kippas and talleisim. girls have their bas mitzvas at 13. they also believe that homosexual sex is allowed. come on!

Knock it off now. There are people in this guild who are not orthodox, myself being one of them, and I'm sure that I'm not the only one who takes offense at being told I'm not a real Jew, that what I believe is stupid and wrong. So I warn you one last time, watch what you say.

Edit: Jews are attacked by outsiders enough, we don't need one Jew looking over at another and saying "My G-d is better than yours". neutral

You're quite right, I don't really understand what you're trying to say. The "come on" came across rather offensive, yes.

Everyone gets carried away, but it's rather important to still watch what you say. It's a pretty shitty thing, saying stuff like that, no matter what religion you are or what you're talking about.

I'm content with the apologies, and I only ask that you watch yourself in the future.

Ugg.... Come on guys- I have the flu, I don't have the time or energy to type out a response now, and it's almost sundown. Be nice, or I will ban people. Believe whatever you want, but don't start calling other people names. I'm grumpy and tired, so this sounds harsh, but just because you believe/interpret something a certain way doesn't mean it's right or that others are wrong. Calling Judaism "real" if you believe a certain thing is just plain rude.

Domnu: Thanks for being online when I wasn't; sorry about that.

Res: Glad you're interested in Judaism; let me know if I can help in any way, though I don't know nearly as much as other people in this guild. Welcome, by the way- don't think I've said that! Oh, and I like your name.

I'm glad you're thinking about converting! I'm a conservative Jew, but was born into Messianic, so I sort of made the decision to be conservative. I think you should talk to rabbi about converting!

We've had a BUNCH of conversions at shul lately. After that 55...there have been several more. But of course, there's a lot of studying involved.
When you say conservative, though, what kind of level of practice are you considering? Extreme--or more relaxed?

Extreme. I want to commit the best I can to this. I feel in my heart that this is the right path for me.

I have one problem, and that's my girlfriend...

*sigh*

I thought I would live my life celibate because of the whole "homosexuality being a sin" view, especially with Leviticus 18:22, but I couldn't. One look and I was hopeless. I sometimes think that Hashem made it be, because she is severely supportive of my decision even though she is an atheist. Even more supportive than my friends.

In all seriousness, if it wasn't for the fact that I am gay, I would convert to Orthodoxy.

Ahem. I will NOT engage myself in a putdown of other Jews. However, Shtolts, you're mistaken. My ORTHODOX rabbi (no, not Modern Orthodox, but a rather chareidi Sephardi man) has pointed to several sources within Talmud and Torah that point, just as clear to him, to the fact that only ONE act is forbidden for two men (a**l penetration), and NO acts are forbidden between two women, while about two hundred acts are forbidden between a man and woman. By that logic, one should ban heterosexuality, not homosexuality, yet no one's trying to do that.

Yes, there are rabbis who condemn it. There are also many ORTHODOX rabbis who fully support it. They say, "No one asks a man and wife whether they're observing every single law concerning marital relations; we simply trust that they are. So why ask gay men whether they're observing the one-and-only commandment directed towards their relationships? Why ask lesbians any questions at all, since the Torah doesn't even speak about it, and what isn't forbidden is permitted?"

If you want to pasken (give an authoritative statement on Jewish law), you might want to post a JPG of your certificate of s'michah (rabbinic ordination) first, so that we can take your word as authoritative. In the end, it's simply an opinion that you have, that your individual rabbi has reinforced.

Rabbis don't have a central individual that they look to -- we don't have a pope, we don't need a pope, so one rabbi's authority over another is nonexistent except by virtue of how many people listen to him and accept his word.

Your rabbi's word may be good enough for you, and my rabbi's word may be good enough for me, but that doesn't mean that either one of them is "right" in this matter. It simply means that you're mistaken when you say that the rabbis who don't condemn homosexual relationships are all non-Orthodox (with the implication that their rabbinate is less valid).

Even if you can't/aren't allowed by the locals to convert to orthodoxy, that doesn't mean you can't practice. There are some conservative I know that are more observant than usual, just like I know some conservatives that are way less observant. Just because you can't 'officially' convert doesn't mean you can't believe what you're believing. It's just a matter of recognition! ^^
