“Cos mice taste better and they’re bigger, that’s why I would use a bug as bait,” Kef pointed out. “It’s like a trade.” Although it definitely would require more work than simply eating the bug, that was true. He’d have to catch the bug and then use it to catch the mouse and there was a chance that he might not get anything at all if the mouse ate the insect and got away. Clearly, the cub figured, his plan needed more work. That was ok. He and Rangi would have plenty of time to talk and discuss plans about how to catch dinner. Speaking of dinner… Kef’s stomach growled plaintively and he looked down at it in surprise before giving another one of those embarrassed grins.

“Umm… think we could practice hunting now? I’m kinda hungry…” and by ‘practice’, he meant ‘let’s go run wildly at bugs and mice and hope that, by pure chance, we manage to kill something’.

"I like moths..." That's what she caught usually and they were pretty tasty for bugs. THey at least weren't all mushy like grubs or squirmy like other things. "They're fuzzy too and don't flutter on the way down."

She grinned and then looked down when Kef's stomach growled. She guessed it was close to lunch time. "We can try ... there's usually stuff near the trees" That's where she usually caught her meals but she hadn't eaten breakfast there so maybe the mice wouldn't be scared off already.

Kef nodded in agreement with Rangi’s expert culinary wisdom. “Yeah, and they’re pretty easy to catch too since they don’t fly so well. How do they fly, do you think? They fly differently than birds. Birds flap really evenly and stuff, but moths flutter madly.” The brown cub didn’t actually expect a real answer from Rangi, of course; who knew what moths were thinking when they fluttered so desperately anyway? This was generally how Kef’s mind rambled, jumping from floe to floe of thought. It was slightly more connected in his mind, but since he wasn’t really used to voicing his thoughts, they came out in a rather disjointed fashion.

“I like grasshoppers. They’re harder to catch, but nice and crunchy. Moths are sort of squishy.” Just as quickly, he came back to the original topic of Tasty Bugs. He looked towards the trees with interest, wondering why prey would be more plentiful there. “Why do you think bugs and stuff go there? Like instead of the grass?”

She'd never really bothered to think how they flew other than that it made them easy to catch. That was useful to her so she thought that would be a good way to think about it. "They're not all squishy ... they crunch when i eat them." She'd never met a squishy moth so she wondered what kinds he'd been eating.

Getting up she started off toward the trees hoping he'd follow. "Maybe they feel safer?" She liked it near trees and bushes too. The shelter made her feel better than being out in the open. "Or there's things we don't eat that they do that are there?"

“Their wings are crunchy, but everything else is squishy. Or fluffy. Definitely fluffy,” Kef insisted as he followed Rangi towards the trees. She knew the area better, so it made sense for her to lead for now. Besides, the brown cub was now deep in thought, considering the various possibilities why a bug would like the trees more than the open. More places to hide from starving lion cubs, he supposed, although he didn’t think that many stopped by here. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe this was some sort of meeting place for lost cubs, a sort of Lost and Found on a much larger scale.

Snapping back into the present, he realized that he was falling behind Rangi and trotted the next few steps until he was next to her once more. “Maybe we can figure out what they like to eat from watching them.” This was said without any real feeling behind it, though. He knew that if he saw a bug, he would try to eat it rather than study it, and guessed Rangi would do the same.

"Only the really really fat ones. I don't eat those." They were icky tasted usually. She liked the skinny ones since they crunched. "The fat ones are easier to catch but they stick to my tongue." That wasn't a pleasant feeling. She didn't like things sticking to her tongue and most certainly not bug bits.

"You're hungry. It's not good to watch on an empty stomach." She grinned as she made it to the small slightly cleared patch around the tree. "First food them watching? There are more at night but they're harder to see i guess..." She forgot about that part.

Rangi’s wise words brought a nod of agreement from Kef again. He personally liked the texture of crunchy bugs but if he was really hungry… well, that’s what low-flying clumsy moths were for. “Yeah, let’s hunt first,” he said with a nod. He looked curiously around the tree, looking at everything slowly and closely, from the trail of ants steadily marching up the tree trunk to the leaves that littered the area. Ants, he had learned long ago, didn’t taste very nice. Kind of spicy and they were too tiny to bother eating anyway.

“Umm… I guess we can start over here then,” he said, wandering over to a rock. Placing his paws on it, he attempted to shove it over. He had long ago noticed that bugs generally ran under things when they were chased around, so maybe there were some under here. Unfortunately, no matter how much he strained his little cub muscles, he couldn’t budge the rock at all. “Rangi? I think I need some help…”

She pawed at the ants for a moment wishing that there were more of them. She'd found some that were really good and crunchy but you had to catch them when they were in big numbers. Those didn't seem to be the ones that were taking over the tree at the moment.

Her ears swiveled toward the sound of Kef's voice and she turned to see what he was doing. Rocks, ew. "What are you doing?" She wandered over and eyed him and the rock. "Rocks don't taste good"

Kef eyed the rock for a moment, trying to imagine fitting his jaws around it. “I… haven’t tried…” although, if they were edible, it would have solved so many problems in one go. There were always plenty of rocks around and they didn’t run away like bugs. He had to wonder where rocks came from… did they come from the same places that cubs came from? Or did pebbles just somehow appear and grow slowly until they were mighty mountains and boulders?

“I’m looking for bugs,” he said matter-of-factly. “When I chase bugs, they hide under things. So, I’m guessing that there are some bugs under here that are already hiding.”

"Aren't they just going to go hide again if we move the bolder?" The idea seemed smart to her. "Unless .... we'll just have to be faster than them." She nodded and leaned her shoulder against the rock. If they both pushed maybe they could get it over and hop that there was something crunchy and filling under there.

Kef grinned widely and nodded encouragingly as Rangi’s thoughts followed his own. There were two of them; surely, two small cubs could move faster than some bugs. While he wasn’t entirely sure if bugs could see the same way as lions, he knew that he personally was a little disoriented in sudden light. Perhaps the sudden light from the rock-removal would stun a few insects. Hey, it was worth a try, right? And if he didn’t try it, he’d always wonder. Best get that out of the way now.

“Ok, on the count of three. One… two… three!” Kef strained his legs, summoning muscles that he didn’t even know he had as he shoved against the rock. With Rangi’s help, the rock was shifted over a little. It wasn’t a huge distance, considering all the work the two cubs put into it, but it was enough to reveal a group of insects. Most of them were small armor-covered bugs that rolled up into little balls when poked; there was at least one big worm, waving blindly at the space where the rock used to be. Spiders skittered out from the rock, making a mad dash for more cover. Tired as he was, Kef darted for one of the large spiders.

ooc| Kind of assuming that Rangi helped pushing the rock and stuff. :3 Hope that's ok.
PostPosted: Fri Feb 08, 2008 5:26 pm

"Ick!" She wasn't all that fond of spiders and was quick to jump out of their way. Kef could eat those if he wanted. She'd eat the crunchy things that weren't even bothering to get away. Spiders wiggled funny on the way down and their legs got stuck everywhere.

Poking at the pill bugs she ignored the squirming worm, happy to nudge it off into the grass, and tried to decide which to eat. The poor unsuspecting bug didn't stand a chance against her teeth and was easily crunched away.

"Did you ... catch your .. spider?" She looked at Kef and spoke between bites.

An adult lion on the hunt is a gorgeous sight, pure poetry in motion, every single muscle and sinew working in harmony. A cub on the hunt is merely clumsy. Kef slid and slipped on the ground in pursuit of the spider, which seemed to have an eerily effective instinct about which way to run. It almost got away too; it was pure luck that Kef misstepped and ending up crushing the arachnid under a paw. He crunched it up anyway, hunching over his prey as if worried that someone might come and steal it if he didn’t protect it.

“Uh… yeah, yeah, I got it,” he said, deciding to omit the fact that it had sort of been an accident. Accident or not, at least he had eaten something. Rangi didn’t need to know about that. “I wonder what other ways there are to hunt…”
