Tedious Chapter 12:
Too Early To Be a Mother's Gift
"Today might be sullen and boring..." I sighed as I clacked at the keys on the keyboard. Since school was becoming a hassle for Greed to be by, I had decided to get a job to earn some extra money to help her. She did come up with the wonderful idea of having a lemonade stand. But, I believe she didn't earn enough money to cover herself. So as a side job, I took the role of being a primary secretary to a friend of my father's at the hospital. Since it was the weekend and I had no one to look after Greed, I decided to take her along. She wasn't allowed within the office area, so keeping her in the children's section was the best idea. I stared at the office clock endlessly until finally the time read four o' clock. I gathered my things and told the front desk woman I was leaving and she stamped my name off.
Nodding, I lifted the carrier bag I had on my shoulder. Walking down the center most hallway, I strolled casually over to the children's section. The woman at the counter gave me a straight look before looking down. "Um...I am here to pick up Ge-ge." I said as I spied her from behind the desk. Her head perked up slightly as she heard me speak and ran toward me. The woman just held out paper ad I signed it off as I claimed her.
"Momma, Momma!" Greed giggled as I gave her a hug. She than smiled wide as she grabbed my hand and pulled me forward. "Momma! I want to show you something!" she giggled as she tugged my hand forward. I smiled lightly and allowed her to follow. "Where are we going Ge-ge?" I questioned. She smiled as she pointed down the block. I was not familiar with what in the world she was talking about, so we continued.
Finally, she walked me in the fashion district by the hospital. Greed mostly hated coming down here to this part because of all the feminine items on sale. But today seemed to be different. Finally, she stopped and opened the door of one of the stores. "C'mon Momma! Come inside!" she said courteously. I smiled and slipped my way inside and Greed followed afterwards.
My eyes marveled as we were inside a jewelery store. Racks upon racks of gold, silver, white gold, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies and other gems and valuables lined the shelves. My trance at the beauty was broken by the voice of a man standing behind the counter. "Hello you two." he said in a modest voice. "Is there anything that interests you?"
I blinked to see Greed already by the counter. I followed after her and she halted herself up to see above the counter. My eyes scanned across the counter, watching the flickering of he gems until Greed pointed to a pair of earrings perched all the way at the bottom of the counter. "Can I see that one please?" she asked smiling her best. The man nodded and unlocked the back door leading to the cabinet. Something tingled in me as I watched him hide away the keys in his back pocket and pull out the earrings.
"Here you go." he said as he handed Greed the pallet in which the earrings laid on. Greed smiled and handed them to me. "Look Momma Look!" she said as the pallet went from her hands to mines. I stared at the earrings. They were a pair of princess cut earrings, lined around in smaller cut diamonds. The base was made out of white gold, which also hung onto clasps made of white gold. They were gorgeous, and the tingling feeling grew as I held them.
Greed giggled as she saw the look in my eye's as I held them. "I am going to get that for you Momma!" she said smiling. "You have helped me through so much so far and I want to thank you the best I can. When I have the money, I am going to buy those for you!" My hands shook as the man stared at me with a smile on his face. "Now isn't she the sweetest..." he said with a smile. The earrings were quite beautiful...And I wanted the badly. I couldn't scoff off the feeling I had...the feeling was overcoming my mind and control. But my trance stopped as the ring of a telephone rang. "Oh, will you two excuse me? I must take this call." he said as he slipped back.
I couldn't take it anymore and I slipped the earrings into my carrier bag. Greed stared at me as I did that motion and tilted her head. "I didn't...I didn't pay for those yet Momma!" Greed yelled as she stared at me glaring. But I ignored her and stared at the counter. The counter was wide open and the valuables were there for the taking. I raced behind the counter and stuffed what I can into my carrier. Next thing I knew, my carrier was jingling and heavy with the amount of jewelery I had taken. I was so happy and joyous with the amount of valuables I had taken. But my happiness broke when I heard the man walking back to the front. I panicked and dashed for the front door. I was stopped by Greed, who was glaring at me madly. "Momma! What do you think you are doing?! Put all that stuff back right now!" she cried mad with anger. But I ignored her again and pushed her aside. She fell, bashing herself into the counter. I did not know how hard I had pushed her until I heard something crack and afterwards cries of pain.
But I ignored them once again as the steps of the store owner grew louder. I dashed outside, running for home without looking back. Now, here I lay on my bed. My room light is turned off and the house is silent. The bag of jewels I have stolen is set to the side of my bed. Crazy thoughts are running in my head. But overall, out of all this, I know just one thing. The only person who I ever loved as a family member and close friend, has come to hate me.
