I think that it may have been that you have to remember the death for it to be "valid," and not very many people remember being a baby.

all this talk about him not remembering it couldn't possibly be right he had nightmares about it all the time. he didnt nessicarily know what was happening in them, but he still saw it.
i personally think it had more to do with the impact that cedric's death caused harry. when he was a baby it couldn't possibly be as big of an impact as cedric's i mean.. he WAS a baby, and completely naive to the fact that his mother just dropped dead in front of him.

Don't any of you read the interviews? JK said that the death had t really sink in and be real when you were watching it, as opposed to baby Harry just wondering where all the pretty lights came from.

I agree with SeverusSupporter, I think that Harry didn't quite understand death at the time when his parents died, but when he grew up and was in the graveyard with Cedric, he fully grasped what was going on. And I was just wondering, do you think that maybe only seeing humans die would enable you to see the thestrals? What about if you watched like your pet cat die or something?

I wondered that at first but then I thought about it. Harry was too young to remember his parents death. I mean his Aunt and Uncle told him that his parents died in a car crash and he accepted that as truth. I don't think he had any memory from that night and if he did he was too young to understand what death was...
With Cedric, Harry was faintly familiar with the tragedy's of his past and he actually watched a boy he considered a friend die right in front of him.
