I'm drawn originally towards books that have elaborate or noticeable covers, but I still base my decision on information from the back. Once a book's caught my attention, though, I tend to end up liking it. It makes the expression 'don't judge a book by its cover' hard to listen to...

I also tend to be drawn to specific types of fonts, since similar fonts on the cover tend to mean similar things.

The only thing I'm really concerned about when it comes to covers is whether or not they're embarassing. I can't stand cheesy romance covers with half nekkid men & women with their corsets falls off. I don't want to half to hide my book in shame when I'm out in public!

Yes, like the Vampire Hunter covers. That was an interesting plane ride, trying to hide the cover from my father-in-law.

I swing both ways on the cover issue. A well designed cover will draw me to pick it up. But I am just as easily swayed by a clever title, or well written blurb. Borders receives the majority of my paycheck, and when I'm browsing for specific titles, I typically look around at other titles on the same shelf space. I found The Other Boleyn Girl that way.

Yeah, admittedly, I do judge books buy their covers. Bad habit. The publishing companies count on it, though. Usually I'm compelled to pick up a book either because I'm familiar with the author, I've heard good things about it, the title, or the cover. I've found some pretty good stuff, though, so no big deal. *Shrug*

Heh heh heh....
Yeah...
I do judge a book by it's cover, despite myself.
xD
It's going to be the death of me somehow.
One of the best books I ever read was Hawksong, and the cover was so ugly. I only got it because the fourth book, Wolfcry, confused me. I was thinking of Crywolf, a movie I really wanted to see at the time. But since it was the fourth book and I hate not reading the first book in a series, I decided to get Hawksong first. I loved it to death. Then after read the next two books, I finally was at Wolfcry. The funny thing is, I couldn't even finish Wolfcry. That's how much I hated it.
xD
I admit, judging books by their cover isn't very smart, cause you could let an awesome book pass you by, but I do it anyway.

Hahaha... I have to admit that I do this all the time. I'm always scanning the fiction section for a new book and I tend to just look at the books with the interesting covers.

I try not to pick a book merely by its cover, but it does prove hard. Sometimes I even drawn in because of the title. A good 80% of the time the books I picked by display are rather good, but when I picked a really bad one...I feel so stupid. Even the once pretty cover looks annoying and ugly.
Sad, hu?

I'll look at the covers in the new book displays in the bookstore. I use them as a shortcut to tell what genre they are when I'm in the mood for a certain "flavor". If I go further into the store, I'm ususally looking at author's names or titles--though if I can't read the title due to an overly artsy font, I'll skip it.

The cover doesn't matter.

For me, I either recognize the author or I read the back/flap of the book's jacket.
If the summary doesn't grab me, I'll scan the first coupld of pages.
The cover is only to lure and really, a lot of them aren't all that fantastic.
=/
But the again, some are fantastic.
I probably wouldn't have glanced at Lisa See's novel if the cover hadn't drawn to me since I'm not a giant historical fiction fan.

Gotta love giant fans.

I do judge books way too quickly.
It's hard for me not to gawk at amazing covers.

Sometimes I feel ashamed because all of my books normally have beautiful covers, yet... I have a few that came to me a tad bit battered or missing a cover, but none the less I fell in love with the inside.
I have noticed a pattern.
The books that aren't big and flashy always seem to be the best.

I've just run into an interesting cover issue:

I'm reading Mercedes Lackey's The Phoenix Endangered. On the cover are two male characters, one obviously a warrior-type and the other more mage-like, a female in a white robe and a dragon. All four are characters in the story, but I'm 2/3 of the way through the book and they have yet to meet. I'm finding that slightly deceptive.

(I wanted to read the book before I saw the cover, by the way. It's the second in a trilogy.)

I always read the cover before I buy the book. Though the cover usally plays apart in my picking up the book to read the cover. I don't buy books based on the covers since many of the books I have read and loved I would never have read based just on the cover.
