In high school and middle school it's annoying because you know that the percussionists aren't dedicated to the band. They just play because they enjoy it and they get to hang out with their friends.

If you continue into college, it's MUCH better because you meet percussionists who are just as dedicated to their craft as you are. The maturity level goes up, and so does the quality of music played in ensembles.

we had two kids that didn't ever play, but broke all our stuff, so we kicked them out. xd

I want to kill most of my drummers on a daily basis. We are playing middle school music and our auxiliary doesn't play her parts. She sits there reading a book and expects me to cue her in four measures early. Then there's the 8th graders. They sit there and look down at me because they've been in band longer than me but they REFUSE TO LEARN HOW TO READ SHEET MUSIC!!! I picked up a pair of sticks the other day and outplayed one on a song he's been "practicing" for three weeks. Then I beat our timpani player and the other three middle school skanks up with the sticks and then I went and cried because our section sucks so bad that we don't get to go to competition this year. Yeah, I think it's reasonable for me to be homicidal. What do you guys think?

Our percussionists (minus the seniors and me) goof off way too much.

My point will be proven in the following stories...

Last year, we were sitting in the back of the room as always, when this one guy got it in his head to lean back in his chair.
He fell, kicked the wind chimes, and made a loud WHAM.
Our director was working with the trombones, and didn't even notice when about four of them turned around going WTF?

Earlier this year, we got bored during dress rehearsal of our concert, so the others decided to make the guiro look stupid.
They stood it upright, put this one guy's headphones on it, and stuck a clave in its mouth like a cigar. When our director saw it he said "...normally I'd find this hilarious, but not the day before a concert. Take it down before it falls."

They also made another one with the cheesegrater (don't ask) and the guiro with a cymbal felt like a wig.

There's so many more it'd take all day. XD

Well Phantom, I found all of that HIGH-LARIOUS. I have nothing to top that. But I did know an 8th grader last year who was great at drum set, but was alittle immature. We couldn't find the triangle for the Auxhillary Perc. part, but we found a huge a** triangle and used that instead. It was funny as hell. Besides that, he and another percussionist in our section always used to crack up whenever our director was working with other sections. He most of the time just messed around but always did his part when needed.

our percussion sections are retarded. We have maybe 3 or 4 guys that are truly dedicated to the craft, and we're all seniors and going to college as music majors. The other 20+ percussionists are idiots. Immature, extremely talkative, lazy. The list of flaws goes on and on. One good thing though, when it comes down to it we're not that bad at playing. Granted the laziness means it takes longer to learn things and do what needs to be done, when it is done it's great.

During the more boring things (symphonic orchestra, boring concert music where the percussion barely plays) even we seniors tend to goof around and do stupid stuff. Just recently we had concert rehearsal with the orchestra and we were waiting for the strings to finish their last song. during it, there is a really slow part. Well, in our boredom, we decided to made moaning noises.

We always find ways to amuse ourselves.

Sometimes it's just a matter of keeping things from getting too tense. High school kids aren't prepared to be serious all the time. Sometimes we have to loosen up. And if that means fooling around here and there, we do so.

All the percussionists I know practice a lot n' stuff o_o Sorry to sound disagreeable, but I don't know anyone in my section who wouldn't practice their rudiments. .
Rudiments?
Are you drumline?
Thats not percussion.
And rudiments have nothing to do with percussion unless your talking drumline.
Or for one reason or another your band is playing a marching piece in concert band.
Plus, that is exclusively rudimental snare.
I honestly doubt your knowledge of percussion...

Even Ninjas Hang-out there.

maybe you should learn how to spell too!! ninja um who the hell are you, do you play clarinet?? 'cause drumline rocks and they are suppose to screw around...and or duh ...sorry and or my bad

And your an ignorant idiot.
Im a percussion star.
I have taken 1st in state on 3 percussion instruments in the same solo competition in a single year, along with 2nd in state on an additional 4 percussion instruments.
I know what Im doing;; but I still know that percussion sections tend to be a bunch of meatheaded fools.
Am I? No, but more often than not, most of percussion sections dont know there stuff. You sound like one of those people.
Second, you keep referring to it as "drumline" when infact drumlines and drumcorps are solely used in marching bands and specialty drum exclusive groups. Percussionists are completely different, and that is what these people are reffering to.
Lastly, what is all this about "percussion sections are supposed to screw off"?
Last I checked they were supposed to play percussion instruments.
Only stereotypical percussionist morons like yourself feel that they are designated to screw off.
GTFO of here.
Your exactly the kind of person who gives drummers and percussionists a bad name.

on the drumline (indoor winter marching percussion with battery and pit)
we have a few kids like that on cymbals...
they skip practice to go to movies and stuff
and just piss everyone off.

i wish they would quit. we'd be better off without them. evil

but most of us are dedicated. the ones who arent are young and eventually we just pound dedication into them. some people you just cant fix though. twisted

oh i have stories... last year, one of my percussion "buddies" broke my good pair of xylo mallets, broke one of my bell mallets, and unraveled my vibe mallets. he somehow managed to break the vibe pedal, put a hole through the snare drum, and put a dent in one of the timpani heads. and this was all within a week. i'm sooooo glad he didn't join band this year.

okay so i practice like 4 or 5 hours a day and i'm on snare for drumline and im in concert band. and there's this girl in there and all she does all day is sit and read her book and attempt to draw and then when she does play its late or too loud and its really bugging me because since the symmester all of our good percussionists switched to ap classes so theres only three percussionists and fmyself and the other guy in it practice non stop. why should we have to suffer because the stupid freak doesnt do anything!!! gahh!!!
