Staring out the tinted helicopter window, Matthew watched the sunlight sparkling off the ocean waves below. It was absolutely breathtaking, in its quiet splendor; a definite change of pace from the drab office buildings back home. Though perhaps his attire would have blended in far better there; the young man was still wearing his white labcoat, even on vacation. At least he'd left all his research notes and paperwork back in his apartment in the city.
"How much longer?" The view was relaxing, and he honestly wouldn't have minded if the trip took hours more. The young scientist couldn't imagine they were very far at this point, though. He made a mental note to himself to write his coworkers when he got the chance, and thank them for talking him into this trip.

"Not too much! We should be comming up on the island any moment now." James looked forward, he hated when they asked that. Everyone always asked "How much further..." it got annoying after a bit. But they were almost there and then he could unload this passenger.
"There you go!" James removed one of his large hands from the steering console and pointed, as the Island could be seen from a distance and it was getting larger.
The tropical paradise looked completely natural except for the buildings sticking out in the distance. The helicopter moved towards the landing pad and came in.
"Here you are, Welcome to the Island. Someone should be here to greet you shortly." the well mannered comment odviously meant to egg Matthew to leave the helicopter.

He nodded at the pilot, trying to position himself for a better view of the island. It really was amazing how relatively quick helicopter flights were, he mused to himself. The young man savored the aerial view of the island, taking in the vast expanse of jungle, the sandy beaches, the mountain; his gaze lingering slightly over the sight of the buildings. He hadn't been expecting so much... civilization, but truth be told, he was rather relieved to think he wouldn't have to stay in some shoddy little hut on the beach.
In what felt like no time at all, they were nearing the landing pad, and he gathered his luggage in preparation. The pilot no doubtedly had other jobs today, and he didn't need to delay those any.
"Thank you!" He shouted over the roar of the blades, awkwardly shielding his face from the blast of wind with one arm. It didn't do much good, considering his short brown hair was still blowing wildly about, but at least it kept it from getting in his eyes.
Matthew walked across the tarmac, setting his suitcase down at the edge and glancing about. Now, where was this person who was supposed to greet him...?

Matthew hardly had time to contemplate the island when there was the sounds of a motor being gunned a bit too hard reached his ears, followed shortly after by the sight of a jeep barreling up the dirt road towards the helipad. It bounced over the dirt road, and you could swear you see all four tires leave the ground at least once in its short journey.
Finally, skidding to a stop, the door opened and out stepped a rather odd man. His hair was shock-white, and tied back into a messy ponytail; a wide, exuberant grin plastered to his contradictarily young face. However, the sight got stranger as you notice that he's bedecked in some of the loudest Bermuda shorts and shirt you've seen in a long time. A bright orange shirt with blue and red boats and seagulls on top, and then virtually neon green shorts on the bottom. Sunglasses were perched on his rather long nose, and on his feet he wore beach flip-flops. With socks.
Almost as soon as he was out of the van, his hand shot out to Matthew to shake. "Welcome to the Island - Matthew, isn't it?" He expressed with an eccentric, but friendly grin. "My name's Sabin. Just got here a few days ago myself - great place! I'm sure you'll love it! Anyway, I'm the welcoming wagon and here to take you to the main facility for a few obligatory innoculations."

Matthew turned, trying to spot what sounded like a rapidly approaching vehicle. ...It wasn't hard, admittedly, considering the Jeep was kicking up a slight cloud of dust every time it bounced back down on the road. His left eye twitched involuntarily, and he silently prayed that the trip towards the interior of the island wouldn't be as rough.
The man who stepped out of the Jeep was certainly not quite what Matthew had been expecting. He stood silently for a moment, his mind trying to come to terms with the extraordinarily bright, quite eccentric picture that it was being presented. After a second, the mental gears finally clicked into place, and he couldn't help but grin in amusement.
"Hello, and yes. It's nice to meet you, Sabin." The man seemed to be as exhuberant as his attire was bright, and it was rather infectious. Matthew smiled, shaking Sabin's hand firmly, and nodded. The island certainly seemed like a nice place to be, especially to someone who spent most of his time in the city.
"I'm sure I will. Ah?" He paused thoughtfully. "I'm pretty sure I'm up to date on all of my travel immunizations..." Truth be known, the young man had never traveled anywhere truly exotic before in his life; so shortly before he left, he'd flipped through every pamphlet in the doctor's office and made sure he got everything he thought was needed. Always best to be prepared!

Sabin grinned, and gave Matthew a rather firm handshake before withdrawing his hands to the pockets of his shorts. "You picked a great vacation spott, Matt - can I call you Matt?" He gestured out to the jungles "Completely natural vegetation - And native wildlife! But nothing out there particularly dangerous... well... unless you count the 'gators and snakes. BUT!" He interrupted himself "The beaches are gorgeous, and you couldn't ask for a more pristine and natural get-away. The rate was so cheap mainly because the Island also houses the research facility there" he nodded towards the big complex. "But the facility and the bungalows are the only man-made additions to the island."
He clapped his hands and looked back at Matthew "Well, we have to be doubly sure, for insurance reasons. I don't suppose you've got your medical records on you, do you? And have you had Malaria, Typhoid Fever, and Hepatitis immunizations?" Sabin was already climbing into the driver's seat after having opened the door for Matthew. "Put your luggage in the back and I'll take you to the Doctor's, and then I can show you where you'll be staying" He said with a friendly charm.

The young man smiled, nodding. "Matt is fine." He followed Sabin's gesture, gazing out at all the interesting tropical plants. It was good to hear there weren't any larger predators, though he made a note to avoid any murky water where alligators may be lurking. "Err... are there any venemous snakes?" That was something to worry about. His concern abruptly turned to curiousity, however, when Sabin mentioned the research facility. It would explain the lower rates... but it wasn't something he minded. Something about the idea of science, even so far out on a relatively uninhabited island, made the place seem less foreign. "Any idea what they're doing up there?"
"Ah, the insurance thing is perfectly understandable." It made sense that whoever was running the island wouldn't want to be held liable for such easily preventable things. He nodded at Sabin, kneeling over the smaller duffel bag he was carrying, and unzipped one of the many pockets. "I think I got all of those, but I could be wrong. I did bring my medical and immunization records, though." As well as his passport, a copy of his birth certificate, proof of citizenship... It was all in a little ziploc bag. He gave a somewhat sheepish grin. "I've never been out of country before, so... er... I tried to be prepared." Overprepared, was more like it. Hopefully he didn't seem too overzealous in his packing.
"Ah, alright, thank you!" Matthew hefted his luggage into the back of the Jeep, making sure to place it so it wouldn't jostle around too much. He then climbed into the passenger's seat, and buckled the safety belt. "Out of curiousity, did anyone else take advantage of the low rates? I would have thought I'd see a few more people on the trip over, since it was such a good deal."

Sabin buckled his seatbelt as he took the papers from Matthew and pored them over quickly, his eyes scanning the texts on the immunization records. "I'll take these to the doctor and let him review them and doublecheck to make sure that you've got everything you'll need." Sabin clapped Matthew on the shoulder with the same amiable grin.
"Venemous snakes?" Sabin shrugged. "Well, I haven't seen any of them about, but from my knowledge just about everywhere has them." Sabin glanced down at his watch "Hrmm... there will be more people taking up the offer, but they're coming from different regions, and the helicoptor only holds so many people." Sabin said with a smile and a shurg, the notion of only Matthew not being there not seeming to bother him.
Sliding the glasses further up his prominent nose, Sabin shifted the jeep into gear after Matthew had taken a seat, and within moments they were jostling down the road at not quite the neckbreaking speed that Sabin had arrived with. Greenery zipped by the sides of the narrow road, and soon enough a large fence rose to view, which opened quickly at the approach of the jeep.
Finally, Sabin pulled into one of the spaces in the small parking lot and jumped out, coming around and opening the door for Matthew.

"Alright, muchly appreciated." This Sabin fellow really was quite helpful, and easy to get along with besides. It was a nice change of pace from the rather silent, to-the-point pilot he'd dealt with on the way over to the island.
"Hmm.. I'll just have to watch out, then." Though he supposed it wouldn't be too much of a risk unless he wandered further into the dense jungle, it certainly wasn't an experience he wanted to go through. Vacations were meant for relaxing, not for hospitalization due to snakebite. Matthew nodded a bit at Sabin's response to the question of other people. It had seemed a bit odd that he had been the only passenger on that particular trip, but if everyone else was coming from a different region... well.
As they sped along the dirt road, Matt was quite thankful that the tires of the vehicle didn't seem to be leaving the ground this time; though the young man did find himself gripping the side of the door a bit tightly during some points of the ride. He would have liked to have had more opportunity to watch the scenery pass by, but it was hard to concentrate going down the bumpy dirt road. Needless to say, he was quite glad when they reached their destination.
"Thank you." He stepped out of the Jeep, taking a moment to stare up at the rather large building in front of them with an impressed look on his face. The young man then turned back to Sabin, ready to follow him inside.

"No problem at all, my friend" Sabin smiled, swinging one of Matt's duffles over his shoulder effortlessly. "Just follow me, and I'll show you to Doctor Moreau. He's the one who owns the Island and the research facility here." Sabin called over his shoulder to Matthew as he headed into the building. Everything seemed automated here - the front doors sliding open silently, leading to a plush, polished -wooden-floored waiting room with soft couches. Sabin didn't stop here, however, heading on straight to the double doors at the end. "But it's a big Island, and there's no reason not to open it up for the enjoyment of some others." Sabin laughed as he headed into the pristine, white hallways, and headed to a single, big elevator. Once again, the door slid open as if anticipating his arrival. "After all, The Doctor doesn't exactly get out much and enjoy the beaches and the jungle. Too caught up in his work. Floor 8." With Sabin's vocal command, the doors slid shut again and there was the feeling of sudden movement.

Matthew took the other bag, carrying it with a bit more effort than Sabin seemed to be using. It was absolutely amazing to think that a single individual owned this whole island, as well as the entire research facility. Usually, it took large companies with very good funding to operate something like that; needless to say, he was impressed, and very much looking forward to meeting Doctor Moreau.
The young scientist couldn't help but cast distracted glares left and right as they walked through the facility. If the simple security and decor were this fancy, he could hardly imagine what all the equipment and facilities must look like. He smirked in mild amusement, thinking what the expressions would be on his coworkers' faces when they found out that, even on vacation, he'd somehow managed to be around something scientific. This place really was looking grand, though...
"It was very kind of him! This place is beautiful. I hope it stays as pristine as it is now." Even though he'd never been traveling overseas before, he knew there to be a sad amount of 'tourist traps' that could completely overpower beautiful ecosystems such as this. It was a real pity, though perhaps with a single owner, this island wouldn't suffer the same fate.
Matthew couldn't help but chuckle at Sabin's comment regarding Moreau. Was this a common trait among men of science, then? "Funny you should say that. That's why the people at work finally convinced me to go on vacation..." He stepped in the elevator, marvelling at the voice-recognition software. Everything in this building was so shiny and elegant. The young man wondered curiously just how long this facility had been in operation, considering how new everything looked.

Sabin nodded as the elevator lurched upwards. "Since Moreau only uses really the research facilities on the Island, he's hoping to keep the rest of the island as natural as possible - well, within safety's allotance of course." Sabin quickly corrected himself. "I work with him myself and assist some of his research, but I must admit, I'm not quite as strict as he is when it comes to letting onesself enjoy the natural surroundings." Sabin gestured to his Islandwear with a grin. "When in Rome, yes?" If Matt listened closely, Sabin had a bit of an accent, but it was very watered down.
The doors of the elevator slid open as smoothly as they had slid shut, opening into a pristine lab room. While not immense, the equipment that Matthew would recognize from a his line of work was top of the line. In the center of the room stood another man....
"Doctor Moreau!" Sabin exclaimed with a smile "Matthew just arrived! He brought with him the records of the immunizations that he got already" Sabin handed him the plastic baggie with Matt's records and ID. "I thought you might want to check them over to make sure he's all caught up before taking him to his bungalow."

Moreau looked over the papers that Sabin gave him. "Thank you Sabin," he paused. "Well your papers seem rather up, your only missing one innoculation. It's for a rather new disease to this area. Misquitos spread it, nothing to worry about though, we'll take care of it."
Moreau walked to a cabnet which when he moved his hand over it it opened. "Sit on that table for just a moment."

Matthew nodded at Sabin, grinning back at the rather eccentric man in reference to his attire. Yes, it was rather apparent he had no trouble in enjoying himself. If he had time later on, he made note to seek out Sabin and hopefully chat with him a bit more. He'd love to hear what they were doing with this facility, not to mention the fact that this man's eagerness towards the world in general was contagious. Matt thought he caught a hint of accent in Sabin's voice, but wouldn't have been able to place it... he had a hard enough time distinguishing major accents from one another, in terms of place of origin.
Upon entering the room, the expression on Matthew's face grew to slightly resemble that of a kid in a candy store. He didn't recognize quite a bit of the equipment, though he could guess at the function of a few; but regardless of that... it was all he could do to keep himself from darting over to get a better look. This was top-notch stuff, the kind that only high-quality funding could buy; and his inner science-geek was jumping for joy.
He snapped out of his reverie, noticing the other man standing in the middle of the room. Ah, this must be the one responsible for all of these wonderful facilities.
"Where are my manners? You must be Doctor Moreau. It's a pleasure to meet you!" He offered his hand by way of introduction, and smiled eagerly. He couldn't help it, being in such familiar settings, and with such new equipment... it was making him almost giddy.
"Right, of course. What disease would that be?" He obediently walked over to the table, sitting down as instructed. It was certainly good that this island had up-to-date facilities, and was prepared for things like this... he could only imagine the business problems such an outbreak would cause.

Moreau reached his hand forward to shake Matt's "Why Dengue Fever of course. Horrible business actually, the sudden onset fever lasting three to five days is accompanied by severe myalgia, retro-orbital eye pain and mild hemorrhagic skin signs to profound hemorrhagic blood loss and shock." Moreau paused so that Matthew could take all that in.
Pulling his hand away he returned to his cabnet. "So... very good to be immunized against." he smiled and pulled out a vial and a needle. "Now roll up your sleeve."
