"Aw, that's too bad," said Xi, and he gave a friendly look towards the small boy - you couldn't quite tell because of the no-mouth, but his eyes crinkled up in a nice manner. "You get better soon, kid, and then you can come have fun."
"Awww!" chorused Wisp, who had forgotten entirely that he was a jerk. She clapped her hands. "Get well! Go'way sneezes!"

Merroth lifted his head in defiance. "I'm not--"
"Merroth," shot Black. Her strict gaze made it fairly clear to Merroth what her plans were if he did not play along with her charade. It also made it fairly clear this was not the typical mother-son relationship, more like a potential child welfare intervention depending on the evidence further investigation could uncover.
Merroth glowered. He glowered at Black, at Wisp, and Xi. He glowered at the whole universe and silently promised that someday he would make them all pay for the injustice being committed against him. But he did stay quiet. Bad enough Black had already knocked him down once. He would not be further publicly humiliated.

"Cute name," the daycare man said blithely. (Wisp repeated; "Roth!") He apparently was good at keeping a straight face as to the relationship between the two, and even better at keeping a straight face in the face of toddler-glowering. "Well, Mr. Merroth, we'll be keeping an eye out for you."

Merroth did a terrible thing and muttered an unspeakable oath under his breath -- somewhat-wisely too quiet for little Wisp to hear it over the din of the other playing children -- because cute was what you called annoying little girls like Wisp. Merroth was not cute. He was fearsome and impressive, and he really wanted people to know it.
"To make sure you don't fall," Black said in addendum to Xi's statement, failing to wholly suppress her snigger. She wiggled her little finger in reminder that he could fall again at any minute. Oh, but how delightful it was to watch him squirm and sweat and shoot murderous daggers with his eyes. His resentment was delectable.
Before she could drift too far into predatory reveries Black turned back towards Xi. "Shall we take care of those forms now?"

"Sure thing," said Xi. He shifted and placed Wisp back down on the opposite side of the fence with strong arms, giving a wave to Evan in the background so that he could come and collect her. Totally having forgotten all her woes, though she would remember later and get mad to Chris, the little blonde girl gave a charming little wave and a giggle to Merroth. "C'mon down this way."
Merroth was fearsome and impressive and not at all cute! It would of course leave a much better impact when he was fearsome and impressive on people who had a much longer attention span. Until then... he still needed time to make his entrance. But the day would come soon.
