She shushed him softly when he thanked her, letting her tail rest across his back as relaxed down against her. " Get some sleep, Altair. " She said in her soft, affectionate tone. No doubt she would one day make a wonderful mother, with such natural kindness and caring.
While he settled in to sleep, her eyes turned back to the dim light coming from the distant entrance to their temporary resting spot. She would do just as she told him she would. Her ears were perked up to listen, and her eyes focused, making sure that whatever he ran from would not find them unaware.
Slowly, her tail swished across his back, stroking it in a soothing manner, nearly chuckling at the urge to begin grooming the full grown lion she was curled around. She gave a light shake of her head, before resting it down on her paws, letting him get his sleep.

He rested his head down, closed his eyes softly, was surprised to find a tear working it's way between his eyelids. It slithered down his cheek, fading into the dark fur on his face. He snuffled softly, a small, gruff purr rumbling from his throat.
After today, how long would it be before he felt as safe as this again? How long would it be before he could let that soft smile touch his maw.
He saw Samar imprinted golden on the backs of his lids but it faded out, leaving him with darkness. He curled tighter and after a few more moments, was asleep.

He woke up as moonlight filtered in through the den and raised his head. The candescence of the moon ran down the length of his whiskers, silver thread in the night. He turned his head back to the sleeping, gold child.
He smiled softly, gently.
"Madhu-Makhi..." He whispered her name into the darkness, hoping that even in sleep she would hear his words. "Thank you for protecting me." He knew he had to leave her then, to fade into the shadow as if he had never been. He was a wanted lion, the assassins were after him. And so long as they believed him alive he could never stop running. And so long as his scent lingered with this female she was in danger.
He had to leave her, though it pained him to do so.
"May the shadows watch over you." And he uncoiled himself silently from her embrace, shivering at the chill that came with the lack of her warmth. He lowered his head to hers, gave her a small lick across her forehead, then without a word, swept from the cave and vanished.

It wasn't until morning that she woke, shifting in annoyance as the sun reached deep into the cave, casting its self over her eyes. She let out a soft grunt of annoyance, squirming backwards into the cool shadows.
It took a few minutes, but suddenly her eyes shot open, sitting up quickly. " When... " She couldn't remember ever drifting off, but she must have at some point... She frowned in confusion as she began looking about slowly for Altair. Where had he gotten to..?
She slowly rose to her feet, stretching to work out the soreness of her sleep before she moved forward, out of the cave, eyes scanning across the grassy land for any sign of his dark coat. But there was none...
" ... Fare well, Altair. May the few good memories I've given you guard your sleep where I can not.. " She whispered into the wind, hoping he received the message, wherever his paws had taken him.
She may be naive, but she was no fool. He had vanished into the night, but she knew it was only because he was worried for her. He had said from the beginning that he was being hunted.
She shut her eyes in thought a moment, before smiling slowly, even as the tears began to fall. The connection was there between them, even though they were only near each other a brief time. She would meet him again. She was positive of this.
Her mood lifted, she left the cave to once again take up her exploration of these lands.
