The way Eponine seemed to unbelievably happy over receiving his hat made Shane feel oddly warm inside. It was incredible that such a small, offhanded gift could make someone's day as it clearly had this lass' and it made him want to give her a hug and give her more presents. Just to see that genuine happiness that she had at that moment. Desperately, he wished there were a way to capture the happy Eponine before the shy, scared one came back but he didn't have anything with him that could possibly work to do so and instead tried to commit it to memory even as he responded with, "I'm glad for that, lass." Another fond smile touched his lips as he watched her, wishing he could know why something so simple as a hat made such a big difference for her.

But even as he celebrated having brought her out of her shell just a touch she returned to the stuttering, shy girl that so often hid behind the loud mouthed Estrelas. Wincing mildly before he could catch himself, Shane wished he'd had the forethought to not ask such a thing as it had obviously caused her distress. When she asked him if it were normal and began staring around in that wild manner that meant she wanted to run away, he finally put his hands in the air as if surrendering, "Lass, there's no need to grow distressed. I came out here for a nice jaunt in the winter air, that's all. Its perfectly normal to enjoy the outdoors - during any season, so don't be upset, I meant no harm by askin'!"

And so he hadn't. He just hoped she didn't run away. Again. They were just starting to get to know each other, and it would be such a waste if she did run. Slowly the Irishman thought of a way to change the subject, glancing around at the way the air warmed at his breath creating small foggy clouds, the dainty way the frost made the frozen branches look, the flakes of snow that sparkled so pleasantly in the sun before finally smiling and saying, "Winter is beautiful, don't you think?"

Maybe that was a safe topic...

Oh- 'perfectly normal-' ahahah... Eponine winced inwardly, wondering if she had just made a complete fool out of herself. She quickly thought of an excuse. "Oh! I thought for a moment that you thought it was funny," she said, then thought for a moment. Well, it was perfectly safe, wasn't it? After all, it wasn't like Shane was a total stranger or a minion of the Manager... His question about winter made her stop and think for a moment.

Huh! The monologue about the harshness of winter described it as a bitter, chilling spirit, but there was a certain beauty in the world outside, as if someone had whitewashed away all the dirt in the world. She stopped. Shane was right. It was a beautiful land. She tilted her head and looked back at the Irishman as if seeing him for the first time. "You're right, it is!" she said, slowly. Was it a human thing, to notice things like that? "It really is," she said with childlike wonderment. "It snows in Ireland, right? Does this remind of of your home? The weather in Ireland is like the weather in Paris, isn't it? Except greener, because it's the Emerald Isles, right?"

It was all the Irishman could do to not blink blankly at the woman as she proclaimed that she'd thought he thought it funny. For a moment, he wasn't entirely sure what she meant, and then he could only wonder curiously at her bizarre sense of humor - if it was even that. With a smile on his face he listened to her agree as if it was the first time she'd thought about winter being beautiful. Truly, this woman was an incredible one, and he was glad to have met her.

A small chuckle sounded brightly through the air as he nodded, "Aye, lass, it snows in Ireland." There was a pause, though, and a hint of sadness arose in his eyes as her questions turned to his homeland. These were questions he wasn't really prepared to deal with, so he kept his responses light and of little personal consequence. In truth, the cold of the mountains did not remind him too much of his home, as he was from a city and was used to many children running around laughing and causing problems. That was what happened in a large family, after all. "A little, Eponine, though I came from a city and not high up in the mountains." A twinkle appeared in his eyes and with an overly large grin he laughed, "Oh, aye, Ireland is quite green, just like its namesake."

With a pause, as he noticed the cold lingering harsher around his ears that were now particularly vulnerable to the cold, he shivered just a little before asking, "Have you ever heard how Ireland got its name?"

Eponine was programmed to recognize human faces and emotions, and if she cared to brag, perhaps even better than non-programmed people. "I'm sorry, did I say something?" she asked, more confused than actually sorry, as she was not exactly sure of the cause. Maybe just a bad dinner, like an over-aged egg or such.

Strange! Shane was such a nice person. Trustworthy. He was quite different from, say, the beastly man from the Masquerade, or even the theater personnel.

City... Mountains... Of course, there weren't any cities in mountains! "I see! Is it a big city?" she asked curiously. In her experience, there were big cities, which were big, and smaller cities, which were smaller and easier to escape from. Shane seemed to know people well, so he must have been from a pretty big city with lots of people, she assumed. But the next part confused her. A green city? Weren't cities only green in a few places, where the government wanted to show off, like opera houses? Wait, Ireland was a country. But... She was quite confused. "A green city?" she hazarded. "Is there such thing? But yes, how?" The robot girl paused. "Is it... Green?" she guessed.

Eponine jumped a bit as Shane shivered. "Are you all right?" she asked, concerned.

Shane shook his head a little as the lass asked if she'd say something wrong. The lovely woman certainly hadn't, instead, he had simply been reminded of a certain unpleasantness that was left behind for him at home. A place he could likely never again return to, a fact that made it all the harder for him to speak of his homeland, but as a gallant man he would do so if the lass really wanted to talk about Ireland. Her surprise and curiosity at the thought of a city where he'd once lived made him want to laugh. She seemed so...innocent and genuine!

With a hearty chuckle he listened to her questions and pondered over how to answer them. Many of the cities in Ireland were surrounded by green land - and had trees within them, not to mention the yards all had grass usually. Perhaps he should have phrased it another way? Small town? Towns? To him it had been a good sized city, but then to those who had grown up in places such as New York or somewhere similar would have that it small, certainly. Shane stomped his feet a little in the snow and rubbed his hands lightly together as he responded to the lass before him that seemed hardly affected by the cold at all and made him curious where she was from, exactly.

"To me, lass, it was a big city. Big as any I'd ever seen, at least!" Until time broke, that was. Then the man had wandered a bit before discovering LOTUS and Wraith. "There're lots of trees and greenery where I'm from and the cities or towns are surrounded by the wealth of the land." A smile touched his face that accentuated the red of his cheeks from the chill in the air as he continued, "But, yes, the land within the city was green but for the paved streets and houses within it."

He lifted his hands to breathe on them and laughed a little when she asked if he was cold, "Just a little, lass. But I'll be all right." Suddenly he leaned forward a little as a raven eyebrow raised in question, "Aren't you cold out here, lass?"
