MightyHikaru Yeah, Dream Theater has changed directions along the years and albums. I personally like When Dream and Day Unite -- their first album. It has a heavy metal somewhat to it. But my all-time favorite is Awake. Man, I can't get enough of that one. Specially Voices and Lifting Shadows of a Dream. Hmm-hmm! There is this one album though, I think of it as their worst (or less good wink ) which is Falling Into Infinity. What was up with that one anyways? But in an all, whether old or new, Dream theater all the way. smile Falling Into Infinity is the result of DT switching CD companies (whatever they're called), producers and all that stuff... They needed to produce an album also because they were starting to go down the drain. This is explained in details in the MP FAQ on mikeportnoy.com ... Have a look. :3

Well, let me say that I never found When Dream and Day Unite so my opinion will be based upon Images and Words, Awake, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance, Scenes from a Memory, Train of Thought, Octavarium. Yes, yes, I know that I missed out two, but those I haven't gotten a chance to buy yet. So in any case. Images and Words, Awake, Scenes from a Memory are simply among the best albums I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. When Six Degrees... came, I was disappointed. Sure, "The Glass Prison" was good, and "Six Degrees..." was good, but the rest just didn't suit me. As for Train of Thought, well, let's just say it was my first introduction to the progressive metal genre, and at the time I was big on nu-metal, so I hated it. After branching out a bit, I returned to that album and bought other Dream Theater albums, cause I had developed a liking for it, but grew to not like ToT as much. Octavarium was just plain below mediocre.

There is no "old Dream Theater" and "new Dream Theater." They change between albums, they don't have phases. I prefer Octavarium to When Dream and Day Unite, whereas I prefer Images and Words to Train of Thought. My favourite album is Falling Into Infinity, my second favorite joint are Images and Words and Octavarium - it's all very blurred, and it just reinforces that you can't really group albums together to compare them.
Apologies if I've made no sense, I'm tired.

I tend to think of the first four albums and the second four as separate "phases", if that's at all clear. I don't know why I do this. Might have something to do with the fact that they went all concepty after FII.
That said, both of the "phases" rule. My favourite album is Awake, though, so...

Personally, Images and Words is my favorite cd. However, I also think that Octavarium is one of if not the best song ever written, so I guess I like all.
