"Eh? I hadn't thought about the chance that this could all just be a false alarm generated by the girls. I know I've heard most about them being scared over anything and everything, but a few other people have made some remarks about the situation as well."

Micajah hasn't thought about the stories and rumours being used as a ploy for attention, and he had to tip his hat off to Nathaniel for actually thinking either that far ahead or that deep on this subject. Not literally tip it, as he wasn't wearing a hat, but more or less later give the boy his proper dues.

"Oh, by the way...you wouldn't happen to have a key or anything, would you? I wasn't told whether or not the door was locked or unlocked, so..."

He felt a little stupid for forgetting to ask something rather important right off the bat, as it had only come into his mind as the door to the supposed 'haunted' room came into the view of the pair. There was a knob on it, as there rightly would be on a door, and he wondered if perhaps he honestly should have looked for a janitor or someone of other means who would possess the key they needed.

"I didn't even think of something like that, sorry."

Now that could seemingly become a troublesome new predicament, but it could be handled appropriately, he was sure. Unfortunately, neither of them had thought of what they could do if the door was indeed... locked. But it seemed quite logical that they should have. If bad things were happening, why on earth would they keep it unlocked? There was almost a pause mid step as Nathaniel tried to figure out the solution to a very plausible problem.

"Well..." he said slowly, running it over in his head. "I should think we're smart boys... and we can deal with that if it happens, but I'd much rather like to believe in the impossible and hope it's unlocked." The British boy, full of proper manners, actually gave a little nervous chuckle at what he'd said. In truth, he had no answers.

"So I take it that you're saying you'd cover my back if I had to break down the door by force? Rather nice of you."

Micajah let out a chuckle as well, though his wasn't nervous, and he took the final few steps that placed him in front of the door that lead to the mystery. It looked like a normal door for all reasons, down to the grease on the knob from sweaty hands touching it, and he swallowed deeply.

If Nathaniel would listen closely he probably could have and would have heard the sound of Micajah's heart pounding in his chest, but for all outward appearances the boy was staying pretty calm, rather collected. He did have a thin line of sweat running down the side of his face and into his shirt collar, but he could play that off if needs be to the heat of the mall.

But this was no time for anything else, and Micajah felt his hand slide down and onto the knob that was placed neatly in front of him. It was rather cold in his grip, seeing as people had probably avoided this room like the plague for a good while now, and he gulped once more as he gave the handle a turn.

"So, we're here...and it's locked. What now?"

Normally, any other good-humored child would've laughed at this statement outright and plainly said, 'Well didn't you just claim you'd break the door down?' Unfortunately, Nathaniel's humor only went so far before it dried up into an unusable river bed of knowledge. He was smart. He could figure out the molecular structure of some of the most dangerous poisons on earth. He was creative; he could cook some of the most extraordinary food known to man. But he was not, for all intentional purposes, useful with locked doors. If it was locked, it would stay locked.

This dilemma was not allowed to happen and was putting quite the dampening hindrance on all his plans. With a short sigh, he ruffled his own hair and stared at the lock, as if willing it to unlock. Then he began leafing through his pockets and the messenger bag he always wore. Pen? No. Notebook? No. Candy wrapper? Definitely not.

Paper clip? That could work... possibly? Or was that only old time movies... well... a chance was better than nothing! It was either the cliche way, or no way. And Nathaniel really didn't approve of the idea of having to deal with one cranky mall girl while trying to buy poison supplies again. That would be too much!

Slowly, he held it up and offered it to Micajah. "Know how to pick locks?" Though it should've been funny, he was quite serious.

The situation would have been far more laughable if Micajah hadn't simply taken the paper clip out of Nathaniel's hands and turned back towards the door, and people would have had to gasp for air from the laughter if he hadn't already started to wiggle the thin wire inside the keyhole.

Sure he knew how to pick locks, it was right up there with his list of other useless things the children of his nanny used to teach him. Things like climbing trees with and without shoes, or how to hot wire a car when no one was looking. Sure, he'd forgotten how to do the car or re-wire a radio, but the whole trees deal and picking a lock routines he'd been brushing up on before coming to this island.

"I'm not as good at this as Pad was, but give me a second or two. If this doesn't work we can simply go ask one of the janitors for a set of keys, explaining to them that we're the members of the ghost club at the school and came to see if this could be proof...or something close to it."

It was almost like he prayed deep down that he didn't have to follow through with his little jest, and Micajah felt his chest tighten as a familiar click filled the silence that his breathing had taken up. If he turned the knob now he knew the door would have to open, as it was the logical flow of things, so instead he simply backed up and decided to give that honor to his companion.

"...Why don't you check it out first? I'll watch and see if someone is coming, and you can tell me if it's clear?"

With a slow sort of fascination, Nathaniel watched as the other took the silly paper clip in all seriousness, and turned to pick the lock. This was quite an interesting development. Was he perhaps some kind of... con artist like that kid Tycho had been so long ago? No. Micajah just didn't seem like that sort of guy. He had goals and dreams and things he had pride for. Maybe he just had a knack for it... but Pad? Who was that? Had someone taught him?

With a shrug of a sigh, he let it go. All these questions would only lead to prying, and that was both impolite and not worth his time. There were other things to attend to, and with the door open and a comment about the other's ideas on his tongue which he bit back, it could all wait till later. The mystery of the store room had to be dealt with now. All cool and calm, he walked forward and turned the door handle and swung it open, stepping into the dank and dark atmosphere that was the store room. Turning to his immediate left, he looked for a light switch, flicked it and sighed when it didn't work. Looks like this would have to continue in the dark, for the most part. A few of the lights did waver and flicker.

"Clear Micajah," said Nathaniel to the other boy as he came back to the doorway and poked his head out, green eyes shimmering with slight excitement.

Micajah almost let out an extremely loud sigh of relief when Nathaniel took the lead and open the door, and it almost echoed itself when the room was announced 'all clear', but the youth kept his best face on and instead opted to nod and take a few shaky steps in and behind. He was still wary enough to keep behind, just in case, but also brave enough now to at least enter the room.

While Micajah wasn't a complete coward he wasn't a complete fool, either. Even with the wavering lights he decided he couldn't falter from here, because he had both a job to do...and had to save face in front of Nathaniel. Sure, the job came first, but his reputation had to follow.

"Not a really large room, now is it? I'm sure if we spread out and look around one of us is bound to come across something, but it human,"

He paused, swallowed, and then continued.

"Or paranormal. Sound like a plan to you, because if so I'll take the right half that's closer to what I think may be a window covered with a box, board, or my imagination."

The last bit of his sentence was in jest, but he really didn't wait for a reply or an 'okay' either, instead quickly moving into action. This problem had to be solved, and it had to be solved quickly.

If Nathaniel had been a spiteful sort of person, the kind who took revenge for past remarks, he would've kept track of the other's fears and made use of them later, for the other spoke seemingly a little to fast and albeit a little nervous despite his brave face. There was a war of inner turmoil that the British boy thought he saw slight glimpses off in all of this, but he would say nothing.

He was not a boy of revenge. There seemed no benefit except the emotional sort, and really... what good did that do anybody? It was knowledge and power that lead the world these days... not little spats with overly emotional teenage boys who barely understood the difference between rocket science and quantum physics.

Green eyes sparkled like emeralds as he nodded to the plan, wondering if they really could cover more ground on their own. For some reason, as he moved towards a shadowy part of the room, he felt a chill go down a spine. It was odd. He wasn't afraid. He'd never been afraid of the dark. It was the dark that had taken things from him; instead he hated it. Loathed it. Loved to confront it head on.

So much for lacking emotional benefits.

Already he was quietly snooping along, thinking. What could it be? In the dark like this? It had to be something rather large, and definitely solid. So ghosts were most assuredly out. Unless of course the ghosts were moaning and not knocking things over like he predicted. And he continued thinking until he too walked into a pile of boxes which fell over, luckily to the side of him, but unluckily caused a loud crashing sound nonetheless.

It was pretty natural that Micajah nearly jumped out of his skin when Nathaniel caused that loud crash, and he was rather thankful the other youth was no where near him, because if he had been then Nathaniel was sure to notice that it almost made the boy burst into shocked tears. It wasn't that Micajah was scared to the point of crying, he just...really didn't like being startled. It was the constant equivalent of someone poking you in the back while you're trying to do something.

"What the heck was that? You okay over there?"

His voice wasn't even a bit shaky as he sent his question and regards in the other's direction, and he wiped a bit of sweat out from under his chin with the sleeve of his shirt. The air in the room was a little tepid, topped with nerves, and he was feeling almost a little too hot under the collar.

Micajah took a few steps towards where he'd last seen Nathaniel's frame, but stopped when he remembered it was pointless for them to gather even in such a small space. If something was wrong, he could come to him instead of the other way around.

"Did you find anything?"

For a split second of spliced time, it seemed that perhaps something had darted out and around the shadows beneath Nathaniel's feet, and so his silence could be accounted for... but at the constant reminder of Micajah's voice, a quick glance away and back proved fruitless. This whole hunt seemed pretty pointless but the faster they inspected every little thing, the better off the silly mall girls would be and he could go back to his room and indulge himself in the hypothesis of using a radioactive fungus for poison (for that was really what he wished he was doing right now).

"I'm quite all right, and I think I saw something, but it's gone now." Well, might as well be honest, if he was called crazy for it. He had seen something. But whatever that particular something was... he just didn't know and wasn't about to search all the darkened shadows to find out. He was only a little afraid, not enough to stop him from the shadows... but really, was it worth it? What would he find but spiders? Useless things to him.

Emerald eyes scanned the littered boxes and found a few things clawed up, edges torn and the remains of various bottles of sorts. It wasn't anything significant enough for him to draw conclusions from. He lifted his hand to ruffle his brown locks away from his eyes and sighed, what a bother this was.
