Never heard of either...
And our percussion instructor for marching band taught me how to play 4 mallets.
Our best senior percussionist does them differently, and I tried to play it like that and it's painful! X_X
Cross-palm is most comfortable...between-the-fingers thing that our senior does is kinda painful if you haven't practiced it for a long time.

It took me about a month to get the steven's grip down, and now I looove it!
What we do to avoid pain is take electrical tape and wrap it around any blistered or painful parts. It's like magic. : D Plus you get cool tan lines if you have it on at band camp. Oh and has anyone been to the Leigh Howard Steven's camp? I'm hoping to go this summer.

i can four mallet, and it's fun, but kinda annoying, i got these weird calluses on the inside of my fingers. last year's almost show the entire pit section on keyboards had to four mallet these annoying, two-note eighth notes for thirty-two measures, and the only ones who did it were me and another one of my section-mates. the other person on the marimba got out of it because i *cough*broke the other pair of mallets during band camp and one didn't work anymore, even taped up 'cause i broke it again during rehearsal...

I'm a burton girl. Andd.. we wrap our fingers in electrical tape for band camp and such. Helps a lot because we warm up for hours with 4 mallets. Never tried 6 mallets. I don't really plan on it either..

Ohmagod, I hate sea refractions...it's the most stupidly easy solo...EVER...it's like a warmup...I sightread it xD lol I'm so horrible. @Thade: Don't ever try six mallets...x.x talk about pain with a capital P, the music gets pretty complex too xD

Kinda sucks that we have to learn Stevens for both Marimba and Vibes (I'm a vibe girl myself.) But I'm going to teach myself Burton. If anyone knows of a decent web demonstration or something, I'd be much obliged.
Almost our entire damn show was in four mallets. My advice would be to wear fingerless gloves. They look cool and make your hands feel better :3
I have a personal vendetta against permutation warm-ups if anyone cares to join me? -lights mallets on fire to use as torches-

I've been doing stevens for 3 years but never have learned burton. I've played solos like Mexican Dances...Etude for a Quiet Hall...umm...first started solos like Yellow After the Rain and and I've done Rain Dance, which I've also used in my pit for warm-ups.
I love four-mallet exercises and solos because they leave you with so much to think about and concentrate on. You have to concentrate on not flamming, your note placements, note accuracy, dynamics, etc. of all 4 mallets...I love it. And the pain you get just builds muscle and callouses. The more you do it the less and less it hurts until it gets to the point where you can play 32nd runs up and down the keyboard switching from your 1 and 3 mallet to your 2 and 3 mallets to your 2 and 4 mallets with no strain or pain. 3nodding

I really have no idea what technique I use. All I know is that I really don't care for 4 mallets.

Four mallets does hurt when you first start. I had blisters the first time, but it gets better! I use two different tequinques, depending if I'm in marching band or concert band at the time. I know one of them is stevens, but I'm not sure if the other one I use is called burton. i personally think four mallets is better than two when you have long series of sixteenth notes to play.

I don't really plan on it either.. Guess you'll never play Keiko Abe's wonderful concerto "Prism Rhapsody." It uses 6-mallet technique part of the time, which isn't that hard. sad Anyone have an questions, let me know. I'm a junior in college studying percussion (mostly marimba) and plan to play marimba concertos with orchestras after my Master's degree. Here's part of a marimba concerto I performed last spring, if you'd like to listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFvqTeorCok

I love mallets, but I've never had to play four. The last music I was given had a four mallet part and I was really psyched to get it, but then they changed it! sad I really wanted to try even though I've heard it hurts. Hopefully I get to play 4 mallets at sometime during my band years.
