His attention was now one hundred percent on the man, taking in any information he could gather. Learning from objects and people… That was prying into their memories… But that was the way of seeing the truth for his own self. It did fit into Shamash’s powers, after all. He was able to see things from an objective standpoint, without people’s emotions getting in his way.

It was allowing him to be a judge.

“… I don’t want to wait, then. When is the soonest we can start with this?”

He was anxious, and he was impatient. New powers were always a plus, and being able to learn what had happened in the city… it seemed more useful than any amount of lackeys under his control.

"Tomorrow," said Abbot, without hesitation. "I've got to get back to the club soon. I'm playing a show tonight at a place called Badland Flats, in the Scene."

He paused as an idea formed in his head.

"I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you haven't got anywhere to stay. Get directions to the club, come see the show, I'll find you afterwards and you can crash on my couch for the night. You ever been to a club in the Scene? You'll love it. You'll fit right in."

He set about putting his guitar away while he waited for an answer.

"This is what fathers are supposed to do, right?"

He hesitated. This was not… Something he had expected. As far as Ciro had planned… It would be training on Shamash’s orders and nothing else. There was no way that this man would actually…

His feet planted firmly to the floor as he pushed in his seat, thinking of how to answer.

“Yea, I’ll be there. That way I won’t have trouble finding you tomorrow.”

A light smirk had crept onto his face. It actually felt pretty good to actually have someone caring about him.

Particularly his own father, even after all these years.

"I guess... I'll be seeing you then."

And with that, he trudged off through the snow, the light dusting of snow that had coated him melting off slowly but surely.

You did a very good job for yourself, boy.

Abbot felt accomplished. Sure, he had been worried for a bit, but everything had gone as Shamash had assured him. He had tied up the largest mystery of his life, the hole that nagged at him each day, and furthermore...

He had his son back.

He whistled merrily as he packed up the guitar and slipped the two credits from the case into his pocket. He slung the instrument over his shoulder and turned, meaning to thank the businessman for his patronage-

-But instead found a stun gun leveled at his chest. The businessman was taller and wider than he had appeared when sitting, his suit the inky color of night and crisply ironed in a way to maximize his already imposing figure.

Abbot! Shamash's voice flashed in terror.

"Tell me something I don't know," replied Abbot, his face twisting into a snarl. The blacksuit pulled the trigger, and the world exploded in a burst of electricity.

To be continued...
