Thorn hopped up and went back over to the row of materials. What was there next to try? He gave up on the wood entirely- it just wasn't his thing. A small stone caught his eye. It was rough and blue, but it shone underneath. It had to be a gemstone of some sort or another, but what to do with it? Thorn tried to polish it, using his Will alone, but all that happened was the stone rolled over a few times. "Do I need water for this?" he asked. The stone was boring, and hard to lift. He really didn't want to keep on working with it, but there was no harm in trying. He thought of the sensation that ripped through him whenever he worked with metal, but nothing happened to the stone. He decided to put the stupid rock down and see if anything could be done with the berries.

Liam, meanwhile, had gone back into his sleeping cavity, looking for something. He muttered as he threw tufts of grass and down around, digging for it. Roth replaced the bedding angrily, shaking a clenched paw at his Sentinel the whole while. Finally, he found it: a long piece of black cord he'd been saving for some reason, longer than the bits out in front of Thorn. Liam's Will wasn't too strong, but he could tie a simple knot that would stay tied, and he knew just what to do with that shape of Thorn's. He went back outside, string in talon, and nudged the fledgling, who was rolling a stone over with his Will. "Can I see your metal shape for a second, Thorn?"

Thorn nodded, not noticing the cord. "Sure. I'm giving up on this goofy rock. I'll play around with the cloth and strings next, but... I think I want to work with metal, Liam." He surrendered the metal piece gingerly, missing its cold weight against his talon.

Liam nodded. "It's a good profession, Thorny. Lots of Sentinels want metal accessories, and you have a knack for working with the stuff." He folded the cord in half and slipped it through the top loop of the shape, then brought the ends through the fold, turning the shape into a pendant. "Come over here, Thorn."

Thorn watched his Minder intensely. What was he doing to his shape? When he saw it dangling from the cord, he understood immediately. "Ah!" he squeaked, hopping over to Liam as quickly as he could.

Liam draped the cord over his charge, shape in front. He brought the ends together and tied them stoutly. The cord hugged Thorn's neck snugly, the pendant dangling freely. There was some excess cord, so he whistled to Roth. The Skurri silently nipped the ends off with his flat incisors, then disappeared to a far corner of the nest. Liam bent his head around to see what the pendant looked like on Thorn. "Handsome," he proclaimed. "It's a very good shape, Thorn." Admittedly, it was big on the fledgling, but he'd grow into it.

Thorn beamed. The metal felt cool against his feathers, but it made him feel warm inside to wear it. "Thank you, Liam!" He snuggled into Liam's belly feathers, in a Sentinel version of a hug. The edge of the odd shape pressed into the older Sentinel's stomach, a strange feeling. Liam said nothing, though, and Thorn pulled away, staring down at the pendant. "I feel like a Crafter already!"

Liam chuckled quietly. "Not so fast, little one. We still have to find you a teacher, and we also have to see if you can work with anything else. Although, judging from the look on your face, you don't want to work with anything else."

Thorn bobbed his head eagerly and went back to the materials, shape flopping against his chest. He looked at the berries and the cloth. "I'm gonna try staining this cloth red, I think." Using the discarded rock and another, larger rock, he crushed one of the red berries, then wiped the cloth over it. He repeated this for about an hour, getting the entire cloth red.

Liam smiled at his charge as he cleaned his nest. So eager! So young! He remembered when his father tested his Will when he was a fledgling. He hadn't done so well at anything but knot-tying.

Liam looked at the scrap of red cloth. That couldn't be the right way to dye cloth... it took WAY too long! It was tiring, too, and he had a splitting headache from it. "Liam," he called. "Can I have some more willowbark?"

Lore called at the enterence. "Hello?" she asked. She had wanted to drop by to see her friend Thorn, but wasn't quite sure what he and Liam were doing. She hopped into the nest with them. "What's going on, guys?"

Liam turned his head back to greet the new voice. "Oh, hello, Lore, isn't it?"

Thorn looked up from his cloth. "Lore! Come see what I made!" abandoning the scrap of cloth and forcing his headache aside, he hopped haphazardly over to his friend, squishing a few of the berries beneath his talons on his way. He proffered the rough metal shape, the bizarre looped cross motif he'd accidentally created. "Liam's brought a bunch of stuff up here to play with!"

Liam nodded. "That's right, and you're welcome to try it out, too. You're probably ready to see how your Will manifests." He surveyed the pile and noticed he was out of metal. That wouldn't be quite fair... "Roth! Go back in the den and get the shiny stuff!"

Roth darted back into the cavity, licking at Thorn's sticky feet on his way. Rooting about in the cool darkness, he soon came across a small chunk of silver metal, brighter than the thing Thorn was so fond of. He dragged it back out slowly and left it at Lore's feet, scampering back to Liam and climbing up onto the Sentinel's back.

"Wow, that's pretty, Thorn! You're good at that!" Lore exclaimed. "Look at all this stuff! This looks like fun!" she said, her eyes aglow at the contents of the nest. She picked up a small piece of stone with her Will, dropped it, picked up a stick, dropped it too, picking up some berries she had nearly stepped on before dropping them in favor of anouther trinket. It was harder than she thought to hold objects in the air, and her attention kept wandering from object to object which didn't help.

Lore's eye's glowed brighter when she saw the metal scrap the Skurri brought. It was very shiny. "Thanks." she said to Roth, nodding. She tried to lift the scrap with her Will as she had done with the other objects. It seemed easier. Much easier. Lore moved it to eye level, investigating it with her Will. "Hmmm..." she muttered, and concentraited. The metal twisted under her Will, no longer flat but twisted in a spiral. "This is awsome!" Lore exclaimed. Her balance tipped slighty, though, and she wavered. Working with her Will was harder than she thought. The metal seemed to want to help her more than the other stuborn substances, though, and was much easier to work with though it was harder to bend than wood and tougher than the nuts. Lore fiddled with the metal a bit more, absorbed in seeing how it reacted when she did this and that.

((Alright, fixed 3nodding ))

Thorn chirped happily as Liam hooted his approval. "Looks like you might have an affinity there, Miss Lore!" Two in the same nest! He would have to ask if any other Crafters would take on apprentices, because the female had great talent, and could use more training than your average Teacher could give.
"I've got a metal affinity, too! Maybe we'll work together after graduation!" Thorn was thrilled to have a friend who could do what he did.

Roth said nothing, but scampered off for more willowbark. He had a feeling it would soon be needed.

The twisted metal scrap clanked to the floor. To someone experienced it might have looked like a seashell. "Yay! Finaly somthing I'm good at!" Lore crowed exuberantly. "You too, Thorn? That's awsome! That means we're both going to be crafters! Right Liam?" Lore gazed at him hopefully.
