My suggestions to people trying out for drum major:

Get advice from past drum majors - ask about the auditions and ask for them to "tutor" you in whatever it is you'll need to do.

If you conduct, practice in front of a mirror (in addition to taking lessons from the drum majors or even the band director).

If you have questions the drum major can't answer, ask the band director (especially if the drum majors won't tutor you). That way, you should know exactly what the director wants. After all, it is his band.

As for the rest of it, you can pm me if you have any specific questions.

Yeah, I loved DMA (which is why I advertise it every chance I get). Illinois, you said? That sounds considerably cooler than Phoenix. Phoenix was really small though - last year (the first time DMA was in Phoenix) we had about 30 people and this past year, 50. Was your group big? I know my past drum majors went to Texas, where they had 150 people or something insane like that.

I learned marching band is magically delicious! (Lol, did GNP say that?)

*GASP* only 50!?!? Our DMA included over 600 people.... it saddens me that I may never march with people like that again.... The first time GNP called attention we were so quiet you coul'd've heard a pin drop, and in my head I was screaming "OH MY GOD YESSSSS!!!!!! xd " . I LOVED DMA. Did your camp have a whole bunch of other camps going at the same time? We had people there from Singapore and Australia it was so huge.... we had to pack people into the Auditorium of ISU for the concerts every night, and that was a BIG auditorium, like 3 balconies, but that was for the entire Summer Symposium.

George himself was amazing, you KNOW you are awesome when you can turn the fact you look like Lucky the Leprechaun into an ego lesson!

Frikkin.
AMAZING.

Exactly! I love GNP. He's incredible. 600 people...that's insane. It would be awesome though. His drill downs (sorry, I suppose I should call them march offs) would be incredible! I want to try that... That sounds like so much fun! Although, admittedly, our little groups were kinda cool 'cause you learned everyone's name so easily and they all knew you.

I guess I'll introduce myself too! I'm the drum major at a 9th and 10th grade school, that feeds into the (in)famous Plano East HS biggrin . We had a crowd of about 200 this year and our season rocked! I had two phenominal co-drum majors and several awesome section leaders who made the season go sooo smoothly! heart The only sad thing is that the season is over! crying
exclaim Shout out to all the DM's who went to Texas A&M - Commerce for camp this summer!!! exclaim

I will be the drum major for our 150-member band next year.

I have had issues in the past, involving an actual fistfight with the current senior drum major.

I now have a scar on my right arm

Oh wow...What happened?

He tried to pick a fight w/ his ex.

At the time, she was my gf.

So we had a problem. He got multiple bruises and I got a permenant scar.

What can I say? He's two years older and about 30 pounds heavier than I.

Still put some hurt on him lol.

Wait, he picked a fight with your GIRLFRIEND?
Whoa, yeah... you had every right to kick his a**, no guy should be fighting girls PERIOD, much less your gf. That's just unacceptable.
I can imagine that it might make being a DM a little tougher though if he was well liked by the band.... and that is a good trait to have btw.

Good Luck!

I think they got our last one on TV, it should be on youtube somewhere, at least part of it.
Search 'Summer Symposium 2007' or 'Music For All' or something along those lines

But I never made it very far on those... sad
We did get split up into pods and I got to know everyone there really well, just not everyone at DMA

I'm Senior Drum major at my high school, and I really enjoyed it. We had a pretty small band this year (45 or so), but it was a big improvement from last year (12 xD). Next year we're expecting upwards to 80 people, so I'll have a junior drum major, too.

And... I attended George Parks' Drum major academy too. It was amazing! It really was one of the greatest weeks of my life. I can't wait until next year to go again! Parks is an incredible teacher, and a really cool guy. I also met so many friends there. I talk with a few still now.

Isn't it the most amazing experience ever!? I loved DMA. By the way, that video was awesome, now that I see it, I think I've watched it before...but now I can look at it and say "I know someone in that drill down!" (sorry, march-off, whatever, my band calls them drill downs). Just watching that though...I anticipated about half of Parks' calls from that perspective (I can't do that when I'm marching, sadly). Just watching and thinking about what commands could be called...well, a lot of them were evident to me, meaning that's what I would have called if I were calling the commands. Kinda cool really.

To anyone who's interested: DMA is open to everyone in some form or another, but admittedly it's designed for drum majors (although I think section leaders could learn A LOT there too, so long as they don't get back to school and act as if they now know more than their DMs...which they would, if they went to DMA and their DMs didn't). Anyway, DMA is the most outstanding week of your life. You crawl into bed each evening sore in places you didn't know you had (seriously, I never knew how much conducting hurt your sides...) and by the end of the week, you're quite possibly suffering from sleep deprivation, but the experience is...beyond words. You learn more than you've ever learned in five days of school (it's not even five full days!) and it's more applicable to you, as it's about band and how you should behave. Going back my second year was the best thing I've ever done. ALL CURRENT DMs SHOULD GO BACK THEIR NEXT YEAR, it pwns. You already know all the weird commands and the routine, and you most likely get a squad to take care of. It's like being a section leader...of drum majors. Really, though, I think everyone should go to DMA. (and now I'll stop my odd advertising)

So x0-Pascal-0x, where did you go to DMA? I was at Phoenix...no chance you were there, too, right?

Ah, no, I'm not in Pheonix. I live on the east coast, so I attended the one at West Chester University. It was his last one for the summer.
And yeah, the days are hard, but it's all worth it. I lost my voice by the end of the week, and my shoulders and sides hurt so much! xD But it was the greatest, and helped me a lot. I was the only drum major at my school last season, and only a Junior then, so it was pretty tough, but everyone told me I did a great job. I couldn't have without the DMA!

(Everybody cheer for pushups! Hurrah!)

Hurrah!

I know what you mean. My first year, I yelled so loud during our last drill down, when he made us direct the star-spangled banner right afterward, I couldn't sing. It was bad. ^_^

Ah, I can barely sing anyway, so when we did that exercise, I just sort of hummed the tuba part. xD I really can't sing in tune. I have a good ear, but I can't make my vocal chords obey me. jaja

Hummed the tuba part...that's great. I recall wishing I could put words to the mello part...

Ha! I hummed the trombone part to the national anthem on the final March Off. There's a reason why i'm in band instead of choir (other than the awesome uniforms, or the band trips.... or being in band. biggrin )
I almost laughed though, one of the girls I became friends with started screaming it out of key. She wasn't a singer either.
