Madison threw the now cleaned shell back into the water and wiped her hands at her sides.
"Sean, what a nice name! I take it that it's spelt S E A N and not S H A W N, which is much more common. Sounds Irish!" Mad blabbed on trying to sound amused.
To her knowledge, she felt that she did not had much in common with this 'Dude' fellow. It was beginning to be difficult to forge a conversation with him as topics she could ask him about swirled in her head. They were from two different worlds.
She sighed in relief when he broke the ice again and asked another question. "I still don't know the whole reason why. He told me that he could make me hear again somehow. I really trust him on that so I'm staying here" she replied and smiled at him.

The cliffs were getting closer as Madison walked with the Dude and the sand was turning into pebbles.
It was getting harder to stand in the surf as the tide was much stronger up here, so Madison stepped higher up.
Her foot jammed in between two rocks, but she freed herself just in time before stumbling. It was be so embarrassing to fall in front of the Dude. Her lack of self esteem was creeping up on her and she was trying to keep up.
"I can read lips pretty well" she shyly smiled. It was so upsetting to her when people questioned her disability because of that talent. "I can sign too but not everyone understands it. Those skills took me a long time to learn..I wasn't born deaf. I became that way three years ago."

From the look on the Dude's face, she could tell he wasn't really buying that she was deaf.
"Okay to prove it, just yell in my ear as loud as you can. Or you could say something nasty about me while I close my eyes" she joked, hoping to ease up the tension.

They had finally reached the cliffs and started climbing up the giant boulders.
"Wow, you mean if I don't look at you you can't tell what I am saying?" - the Dude clarifyed, slowing down again so that the lady could keep up.
"You need a hand, btw?" - he offered. "One can twist one's ankle here in the stones easily." Not that he seemed to be having any trouble.

Madison didn't really like explaining things everytime she met someone new but figured it was for the best.
"Sometimes I can't see what everyone is saying, but I can see throat muscles if they are talking at me from the side. I strain my eyes sometimes trying to see if anyone around me is talking and it can be quite challenging" she replied and then began hoping that the Dr. would restore her hearing soon as promised. Having to read lips everytime was not easy.. sad
There was this one time that a guy had asked her out and said the time he wanted was six to pick her up, but she misread him and thought 'sex' instead. She slapped him but then realized later that he was referring to something else.
Since then, her skill was improving so she could read lips alot better.
"Sure! I could use a hand. How kind" she said and steadied herself on the rocks.

A miscievious grin appeared on the Dude's face and he took Madison's hand, helping her along on the rocks, still carrying his mask and flippers over his shoulder in the other hand. He was substantially taller then the girl, so it kinda looked like he was leading a child along the rocks.
"I am sure it's very hard. Did he explain how he was going to restore your hearing, Madison?"
The water next to the cliffs was deep and dark and a few seagulls flew up and away from the approaching humans.

Madison grabbed hold of the Dude's hand, her own smaller hand fitting into his like a glove.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw that the Dude was saying something else so turned to look.
"He did not say exactly how he would do it, just he gave me a shot." she said and held out her arm to show him the small mark on the inside of her elbow.
Reaching in her bag, she took out her binoculars to get a better glimpse of the gulls. They were more massive then the ones where she lived so she figured they must get lots of food on the island.
The view from the rocks was so magnificient and she could see lots of the island as they went higher.

Holding the little hand of the girl carefully, and casually leading her along the cliffs the Dude was not watching the birds at all. Instead, he was looking for the debris of his boat underneat, trying to figure out where exactly the "Libery Manatee" sunk to her final rest. But when she spoke he turned towards her so that she coudl tell what he was saying.
"A shot? In the arm? I see." - he replied quietly, looking at her. The conspiracy theories began swimming up in his mind again.
"Did he immunize you against dengue fever, as well?" - he asked, still looking at her.

Moreau watched and listened to this in his monitor room. This was getting out of hand far too quickly, perhaps he should have informed Madison of more details but he was hoping her loyalty would be higher when she'd reached the first stage.
He hit a few buttons as the small cell phone like radio that he'd given her began to make noise to alert her that someone was trying to get in touch with her.
Edit: The radio vibrated as well, much like a cell phone, and had a text display screen.

When the phone beeped the Dude pointed to it for Madison: "Your pocket is ringing" - he said to her.

Madison noticed that the Dude was looking down from the cliffs so she offered her binoculars. "Here, use these. Are you looking for your boat?"
"Dengue fever? You mean the disease you get from mosquitos? Well, I don't think he gave me a shot for that or he would of told me. It was so strange the way he acted after administering the needle to my arm. I could see a freakish glow in his eyes.." she trailed on and then closed her eyes to remember the moment more vividly.
Surely she would know if it was a shot she was getting to prevent Dengue. Was there even any mosquitos on this island? She hadn't seen any at all but figured they must come out only at night like the ones where she lived.
Her suspicions of the Doctor's activity began to eat at her.
"How long ago did Dr. Moreau give you this Dengue immunization?" she asked and began to worry. Maybe that was what she was given and not a magical cure to hear as she previously though. Her shoulders slumped as she felt let down imensely.

Digesting this new information and taking the binoculars out of her hands with a gratefull nod, the Dude pointed at the phone again: "It's really ringing, I think you better pick up"

Madison glanced at the Dude.
"Huh? my pocket?" she asked..then felt a vibration by her leg so reached to get the phone given to her by Dr. Moreau.
"Um...hello?" she asked into the phone. Even if there was an answer..she wouldn't be able to hear it. Then she noticed that some words were typing out on the cell screen.
