In America: 7 for not being dumbed down. Overall: Well besides those in America, I've only played FE6... so I don't know. I hear FE5 maps are gigantic though.
Although I'm enjoying Radiant Dawn more and more lately... I think it might surpass my love for FE7... despite 7 being my first Fire Emblem

FE 2 is Fire Emblem Gaiden for the NES the other FE games are good but I think the older ones are better challenge.

Out of the three I've played, I've enjoyed Path of Radiance the most. It's got the best characters by far, the forging option is cool, skills help out, the support options are vastly improved, characters wield weapons based on strength instead of constitution (finally, women can wield weapons that are not of the Slim or Iron variety!), thieves can steal weapons as well as potions and junk, and its plot, though lacking in comparison to FE7, is still decent and sets things up for Radiant Dawn. The only thing that sucked was the ending for taking forever. Oh, and the ravens. But they have Naesala, so I forgive them because Naesala's awesome.
FE7 gets a close second, though. On my recent playthrough, I realized how FE9 doesn't have any terrain... the terrain of FE7 adds some tactics to the gameplay, and I wish FE9 had more than the occasional, out-of-the-road hedge to hide in. Also, FE7 easily had the best plot out of the three (7, 8, and 9) I've played, along with the best villain (Nergal) by far. (Heck, he's one of the best villains I've seen in any game.) Though I think the game's got quite a number of "strong, silent type" characters, at least the cast is better than that of FE8 and not too far behind that of FE9.

Definitely FE7.
I loved the storyline the best, the characters were awesome, it had the most chapters...AND little extra chapters "side quests", and it was just so FUN!!
FE8 comes closely behind, though, because of all the different classes and stuff. (I'm sorry if they got that idea from a previous one...I sadly don't know much about the games not released in readable english and stuff cry nobody ever tells me anything...) WHEEE!!! blaugh translation: YAY!!

FE 7 definitely was the best. The storyline and characters were great.

I'd have to say FE 10 was the best, mainly in part due to Reyson having the Canto ability. x3 (And the addition of the "Strike" parameter for the laguz.)

Path of Radiance was my favorite. It was the first fire emblem with kick-butt graphics. and there were a lot of characters and the new LAGUZ. It also had a good storyline.

I actually never liked abilities too much. Other than some cool things such as Adept, Vantage, and other cool ones, it kinda adds a sense of unrealism to the whole game. Think about the semi-abilities in 8. A general could randomly take no damage whatsoever. That can do some damage to you when there was no possible way to predict it.

Yeah, the ones in 8 were lame for the most part, save for Rogue and Summoner. I still can't bring myself to trust some of the FE9 skills. (I still can't believe Miracle is unreliable... =/ ) Vantage+Wrath, however=Scary Mia and Godly Nephenee. And Provoke on Gatrie makes a great tank. (I think Celerity would be amazing, too, but I never use Tormod.) How are FE10's abilities in comparison, anyway?

Mostly the same as 9. Elincia has a retarded one that prevents her from giving any killing blows. If she kills them, it revives them back to 1hp. And when Elincia and Tibarn are the only ones on your team that can kill enemies, that is not a good ting to have...
