I do love their family -- Cloud accepts that at the end of AC and it's very cute.

Actually, he accepted that he had a new family before AC. When Tifa woke up from getting beaten up by Loz, she remarks to Cloud, "I guess that only works with real families." And he says that he can't help anyone, not family, not friends.
Also, if you read Case of Tifa, Cloud adapts well in the role of a father in which he accepts. He's happy in his family...that is until he found guilt and geostigma. And yeah, you can pick up afterwards.
