Heroe looked down from where she was, above the queen, above the crowds of people that were moving in, above the coming of dragons. She watched as everyone entered hearing the trumphets of the browns, blues, and bronzes outside. For the first time in a long while, she smiled to herself. It was a pleasent moment, she turned her attention to the Queen farbelow, her hide glittering and glimmering in the light. She could see the clutch that was still growing from her place up here, she could see everyone from where she was.

Suddenly a small brown firelizard appeared out of nowhere and began chittering madly at her swooping down his eyes wheeling with displeasure and annoyance. She ducked a few times before realizing what the little firelizard was ranting at. She smiled again and chuckled.

"I'm not hurting anything, little one," She said softly to the irate lizard. "I am a harper and a canadate, it is my duty to write about what i see as a song." She ducked again "here now, stop that!" She said softly but firmly "You'll mess up my ballad!" She stood up and confronted the firelizard whom had landed on a near by ledge still chittering at her angerly. "I know you belong to someone," She said dusting herself off. "But please, please don't tell anyone, or any dragon that I'm up here... It's bad enough that I am disliked by the other canadates, I don't need to be found out, alright? If they knew... if the Weyr Woman knew... I'd be thrown out for sure."

Rafaelle was brought out of her thoughts as the boy introduced herself, then gave him a hesitant smile, and shook his hand with her small one. "I'm Rafaelle, it's a pleasure to meet you," she said with a bright smile, her silver eyes twinkling. "And don't worry, I don't think there's a Candidate here that's not nervous," she said quietly. "I'm most certainly nervous. I only hope that I'll be able to stay in the Weyr if I don't get Impressed, maybe stay on as a Weyrhealer apprentice. . ." She trailed off as she thought about the near future.

What if I don't get picked? I'll go back to the Hall. . . and I would have to see mother and Jaysen as just another Healer journeyman. . . But, oh! If I could return to them a dragonrider! How proud they would be! Her eyes sparkled as she thought this. I'll just keep looking ahead, and hope that my life-mate is out on those sands, she thought, glancing again at the brooding queen and the glistening eggs on the hot sands. If my life-mate isn't there, I'll just ask if I can stay on here at the Weyr. . . they could always do with another Healer, right?

She turned back to Talon, giving him a warm smile. "So where were you when you were found on Search? Crafthall? Or Hold?"

The flash of Kalya's brilliant red hair caught Lemurrin's eye. He raised a hand in greeting, momentarily disturbing little Grenna. The harper waited for the green to settle before patting the ledge next to him. "Have a seat, Kalya," he mouthed, not wanting to make noise and annoy Ariath. The queen seemed decidedly cranky, hunkered over the eggs like that.

Brownie chirped a greeting at Roller and Nicker, projecting cheerful images and half-thoughts at those arriving.

"Nah, the pleasure is mine." He said shaking her hand before retracting his back to his side. He smiled, it was nice to talk instead of just sitting there and being nervous. This allowed him to think of other things than what he would do if he wasn't impressed. Honest to God, he didn't know what he would do. Would they send him back and recollect him? Or not take him back at all? Perhaps, just maybe, they would let him stay. There was no other place he'd rather be. He wanted to club himself over the head, I thought you weren't going to think about that. He then looked back at Rafaelle, he seemed to get caught up in her cool silver gaze.

It took him several minutes when he realized he was staring, he could feel his cheeks grow warm as he blushed a light cherry tone. "Oh, er... well I was about to be sent off to my Craft's hall, but when they found me I was at my Hold." He said with a quiet nod as he recollected the memories of when the dragonriders came. He was one of a few who were chosen as possible candidates, it was something he would never forget. He blinked once before over looking the sands then around them. He looked around to see as Candidates like he and Rafaelle then to see Dragonriders and their life-bonds.

Talon looked at them with shining eyes, he couldn't imagine what it felt like to go between. He remembered one rider try and describe it to him, but how could you really describe that dark abyss? Talon stretched his arms behind him as he gazed back out on those eggs. "I wonder..." he said pausing, "if this clutch will bring a Golden dragonet?" He said, he brought his hand back behind his head and he reclined back a bit. His thoughts carried on, he continued to listen to the soft sound of humming that came from the vibrating of the dragon's throats.

It was like he feel into a trance, he just stared at those eggs. His eyes laid on striking egg that could be found within the circle of eggs. It was in the middle, it made him wonder if it had been lain first? No matter, he just stared at it's mottled colors of different hues. He just stared when he closed his eyes to see a dragonet opening it's eyes and looked at him. He snapped out of the trance, he cursed himself to stop playing with him and forced his gaze to break from the sight of that egg. He returned his sight to the arriving dragonriders.

Suddenly the brown firelizard gave a some what squwak and vanished between. Heroe ducked down and watched as the brown appeared with the other firelizards chittering. She knew he was telling them about her... even though at first the lizard seemed to understand about her situation. But then decided against it's own thought and went between to his fellows below.

"I knew it..." She whispered as she tried to hide from the people below. "I will be in most serious trouble... even more so... now." She closed her eyes and tried to picture herself in the cold dark nothingness of between sadly to say it didn't work no matter how hard the thought.

Rafaelle smiled again, pretending not to notice his stare, and her curiosity kicked in. "Really? What Craft? I was in the Healer Hall at Fort when they picked me up. . ." She reminisced as she was brought back to the day the Search riders came to Fort. She never thought she'd be picked, she only dreamt of it. Imagine her surprise when the green dragon turned her lantern-like eyes on the little journeyman healer.

"If this clutch brings a golden dragonet, I can only hope that I'll be Impressed by her. No doubts that I'll be overjoyed if I get Impressed at all!" She said with a rueful laugh.

She stared once again at the fw mottled eggs protected by the enormous queen, and imagined what it would be like to be Impressed by her very own dragonet. She pictured herself, successful dragonrider, flying triumphantly into Fort Hold and landing in the courtyard of the Healer Hall, seeing her mother and brother running out to her.

Heroe laid upon the ground, she looked over the edge at the brown firelizard with it's fellow and realized that it was a wild flick. She sighed with relief and sat up upon her knees. She thought that firelizard belonged to one of the canadates, thankfully she was wrong. She sighed and stood up, she put her notebook in her back and shouldered it, then she made her way down toward the other canadates, she stopped at the sencond to the last ledge and looked at the crowd hoping to see the green rider that saved her or the Weyr's Harper. Without any luck she continued down and made her ways across the sands making she stayed away from the Queen the best she could toward the other canadates.

Suddenly she saw Talon and smiled at him, he looked friendly enough. She walked over to him and the girl he was with.

"Hi, my name is Heroe...I'm an canadate..." she said softly

Rafaelle looked up as Heroe walked over, and gave her a welcoming smile. "Hello there!" she said, extending her small hand. "I'm Rafaelle, and it's a pleasure to meet you!" She smiled again, her even, white teeth flashing. "In case you didn't catch on, I'm a candidate too, so don't worry about feeling out of place or anything," she said with a reassuring grin.

The arrival of more fire lizards and their companions made Fleckin shift about anxiously. His eyes darted across the sky, peeping out a slow scold to any who seemed to be making trouble. Farin was rather shocked at this change in attitude of the little hellion- it was usually HIM making the problems. Perhaps there was something about her behavior which was inflecting upon him.

Vera seemed to approve of the chidings, and kept herself in brilliant sight of anyone who happened to walk by. Which was quite out of her typical, scared disposition. As the unofficial hatching ground bouncer, as she seemed to have adopted as her role, the woman did not move down to engage in any of the conversation going on. It would be better to stay here, and besides she didn't like much human company anyways.

Fleckin seemed to enjoy those thoughts, and rubbed his head against the Woman's cheek. (Why would she want to spend time with those people anyways? Better to spend time with him. And maybe some time with the Big and the Gold, but mostly with him.)

A sudden squawking above caught his attention. Apparently some brown was making problems up on the higher amphitheater seats. Without much of a chance for Farin to grab him back, the little bronze took to the air, and cautiously swooped over the girl it had been pestering. He circled her carefully, with a kind of interested manner, before swooping back and down below to land on Farin with a bump. She forgave him though, and he apologetically patted her on the nose.

Fleckin sent an image of some wild flitts on the western ridge, who might have been making problems. They seemed behaved now though, but he took special interest to watch what they were doing; as if he had a special control over such beasts. If anything, it would be Vera who could do the convincing... but she'd much rather see Fleckin look like a fool then help her shoulder-mate out.

Farin nodded her head and glanced towards the ridge, but she was out of view to see them. But flitts were easily dismissed- the Queen could scare every one of them from the room if she wished. If they were not presently bothering her, she would make no means to check on them further. Instead, Farin crossed her arms, and leaned against the cut stone wall. It was smooth, and remarkably sleek for how old it was. Staring at the hatching grounds like this brought fond memories. Memories that were oftenly revived at such an occasion.

Training her eyes over at the candidates, she made special note of a few that she believed might indeed impress. But there were always surprises, and she for one knew that well. Moth was a good judge of future riders, but unfortunately liked to keep her ideas to herself incase she was wrong. Being a green rider, Farin enjoyed watching the green dragonets most of all. Say what other dragonriders will, but greens were beautiful dragonets.

Heroe smiled at Rafaelle, shaking her hand and returning her smile. "I was in barracks earlier, I tried to talk to you but you were distracted by something else. And at the dinning hall, there was no room at the Canadate table... so I went into the table in the kitchen and ate. I am pretty use to feeling out of place, but not right now." She looked back over at the eggs. "I have this feeling that we might be seeing more of each other in the skies..." She looked back at the girl "But that's just me... I am hoping in getting a life mate, it doesn't matter what color," just not a blue she thought to herself. I don't want to end up like Re'n She then noticed Faren on the other side of the crowd her back against the wall with her bronze upon her shoulder. She waved to her hoping she'd see her.

"Well, my father wanted me to be his apprentice as a Blacksmith." He looked down at his calloused hands, the work had been hard, but it had made him strong. Instead of being lean and flabby he had some outlining muscle now. He smiled as he too remembered the day he was told that he would be leaving, not for his crafthall, but for the Weyr to be one of many to try and impress a dragon. It has always been a life long dream. Although when he told anyone they called him foolish, so he quite telling everything. It became a secret passion, he tried to be there to see each visiting dragonrider. He would gaze out in awe when the left dissapearing with a blink as they entered, between.

"I wish you the best of luck." He said with a boyish grin. He hoped there was a Golden dragonet out there for Rafaelle the same he hoped for his own lifebond. He chuckled with her, "Aw, I bet you'll be the first to impress." He followed her gaze back to the eggs, he then turned to see another candidate walking towards them. He gave a friendly wave of his hand, "Allo, I'm Talon and this is Rafaelle." He said stretching out his hand to shake. He was happy to finally meet some of the other candidates, they were all so nice and each seemed like a good person. Poor dragonets are going to have a lot to choose from, he thought.

He paused and glanced over at the other dragons who perched on the rocky edges. He listened to one who bugled which sent long neverending, or so it seemed, echoes. He turned to both of them, "So, how long have you guys been at the Weyr and is this your first Impression to be at?" He asked curiously, Talon studied Hereo for a second before letting his gaze stray across the sands. He took notice of everything and even looked to see if any more eegs have been lain. It wasn't long before he returned his gaze to the candidates, he was so nervous. His plan wasn't working anymore, even though he was conversing with other candidates the excitement was still seeping through.

Heroe shook Talon's hand and smiled. She then noticed how nervous he was by his grip. She smiled and gently patted his shoulder reasuringly.

"Well... I've been here a while now... and yes, this is my first Impression. But it really isn't an Impression yet, we're here for the Clutching." She laughed gently "If it were the Impression all the dragons would be here with people from all over." She then realized that these two were brought, while she... she ran away to come here, hoping to be a Harper but then being told by Faren that she was a Canadate. She suddenly changed the subject.

"You don't have to be nervous, Talon, I'm not, truthfully. I'm a Jourywoman-Harper, actually and I've been through many things that would scare or giveyou night mares." She pulled out her book turned it to a page where there were Wherries nesting. "I drew this on my way here... but sadly to say... they caught wind of me and I ran the rest of the way here. Which wasn't easy." She then turned the page to an unfinished drawing of Talon, she blushed and quickly changed it before he noticed to another with Faren and Moth.

Rafaelle grinned, and, struck by a sudden idea, she extended her hand, looking at Talon. "I like you," she said, being rather straightforward, "so how about we make a bargain? After the Impression, even if we both don't Impress, we still keep in contact, maybe even both try to hire on at the Weyr. We'll both need a friendly face if we're going to stay in it," she said with a grin.

"Wherries, those bloody buggers. If they didn't taste so good as meat, I'd probably make a Wherrie-hunting crafthall or something. . ." she said with a laugh. "And sorry about not paying attention to you earlier. I was. . . thinking of things. . ." She suddenly noticed the girl blush and turn the pages of a sketchbook.

"Say! Those are pretty good! Could I see them?"
PostPosted: Sat Jul 23, 2005 6:56 pm

"Uh....sure" She said tearing out the page of Talon and putting it into her pack. "I also keep my music in there." She then pulled out her flute, beautifully carved from blue stone in the shape of a blue Firelizard. It's mouth the mouth where the notes came and it's keys along it's body. The eyes were jeweled saphire.
"It iwas a gift from a dear friend of mine, tell you now it wasn't cheap...so he says," She held it close as if like a real firelizard. "He didn't want it because he had no sense of music, or so he says, and he gave it to me..." Her eyes shimmer as she opened to the first page where a picture of a handsome young mand with his blue dragon stood together in pose, the blue's head next to his riders' body.

"Thank you." Kalya smiled warmly before turning her attention over to the queen who was decidedly the most impressive guardian Kalya had seen. "So had a chance to count how many? I heared that the going bet was around 15, though I have heared both higher and lower." She shook her head lightly. I'm glad I am not there, I would be frantic with worry. Though really I don't see why, those dragons just kind of know what they are doing." She glanced over to the harper with a slight grin, "So you're hoping to be down there when the time comes? I am sure you will become a dragonrider, even Tarlith agrees."

How can I not, he belongs in the Weyr.
The voice gave a draconic shrug which made Kalya narrow her eyes and glance over to her weyrmate in the wonder of maybe he knew something she did not.

Turning her attention back towards the cluching, a warm expression ran over her face as memories of her own impression floated up to ther surface. "To impress is the biggest most wonderful thing... It will be wonderful to get to show you how much so."
